police
ready
to
ride
to
Hawk
Island
and
Pennington
Park
on
loaned
4-wheelers |

—
Delanco
police
will
soon
be
taking
to
the
trails
on
all-terrain
vehicles
in
an
effort
to
deter
crime
on
Hawk
Island
and
Pennington
Park.
The
two
new
crime-fighting
tools
were
made
available
to
the
Delanco
Police
Department
by
way
of
a
loaner
program
created
by
Coby
Frier,
president
and
general
manager
of
Surf
&
Turf
Powersports
on
Route
38.
“We
feel
as
a
member
of
the
community
we
wanted
to
do
something
to
help
the
police
department,”
Frier
said
after
he
handed
over
two
all-terrain
vehicles
to
Delanco
police
yesterday.
Delanco
becomes
the
third
police
department
in
Burlington
County
to
be
accepted
into
the
ATV
loaner
program.
Evesham
and
Lumberton
were
accepted
earlier
this
year.
Frier
said
he
created
the
program
to
assist
police
departments
that
have
shown
a
need
for
such
vehicles
to
patrol
areas
of
their
towns.
Under
the
program,
the
police
departments
are
given
ATVs
valued
at
$7,500
each
to
use
for
a
year
at
no
cost.
At
the
end
of
the
year,
Frier
said
the
department
can
reapply
for
use
of
two
newer
models
for
another
year.
Delanco
Patrolman
Adam
Tilger
said
the
new
vehicles
will
do
wonders
to
combat
underage
drinking
and
other
criminal
activity
at
Hawk
Island.
“They
know
it's
impossible
for
us
to
get
back
there
in
our
Ford
Explorers
and
Crown
Victorias,”
Tilger
said.
He
said
if
the
department
had
such
vehicles
in
June,
officers
would
likely
have
broken
up
a
party
on
Hawk
Island
before
it
turned
violent,
leaving
four
people
with
stab
wounds
and
a
Cinnaminson
man
in
jail
for
attempted
murder.
Delanco
police
Sgt.
Jesse
DeSanto
said
the
ATVs
will
be
ideal
for
crime
fighting.
“This
is
going
to
a
deterrent,
because
they're
going
to
know
that
we
can
go
back
there
now,”
DeSanto
said.
He
said
word
will
spread
as
soon
as
the
first
officer
hits
the
trail
in
the
coming
weeks.
DeSanto
will
take
an
ATV
instructor
course
in
Maryland
next
month
and
expects
to
begin
training
the
other
officers
as
soon
as
he
returns.
