SUPERSTITION HOG 5th ANNIVERSARY LUAU
The weather was fine, the ride was short. We arrived en masse to Las Palmas (Tom & Beth’s) and a very nice surprise. Our sponsors, Mark & Bev, placed live flower lei’s around everyone’s neck. They had flown them in from Hawaii the previous day. This really was a nice touch to the luau theme we had adopted. It was also our fifth anniversary as a HOG chapter. Wow, how the chapter has grown in five years!

The food was excellent and the company even better. A perfect example of riding and having fun. We had old and new members in attendance, as well as some potential new members (they have since joined the chapter).

We are now into summer and have some great rides coming up. Don’t forget to take lots of water and stay hydrated. Let’s continue to ride and have fun.

My June Road Trip
A friend of mine from Brooklyn, NY, Jimmie G, and another friend from Cape Giradeau, MO, Boyd T, came to visit me and take an 11 day motorcycle tour that I planned. Here are some highlights of that trip...

...June 17 to June 27, 2007...approximately 3900 miles...

...Colorado, Durango to Ouray...beautiful...Rocky Mt. National Park...awesome...elk herds at 11000 ft. elevation...Royal Gorge Bridge...the World's Highest Suspension Bridge...more like a boardwalk...we rode our bikes across it, scary cool...Pikes Peak...10 miles up paved...then 9 miles of gravel road...awesome...we put the 3 bikes in front of the sign at the top (picture below)...that was harder than riding up there...14110 ft. elevation...

...OK...

...While in Custer and Spearfish South Dakota some great rides...Crazy Horse Memorial a must...also stopped at Mt. Rushmore...wild life loop in Custer State Park was great...buffalo on the road...a park ranger caught us putting on rain gear and told us to stay in the wild life information building with him...a thunder storm was carrying hail and 50 mph winds...he had us put the bikes as close to the building as possible to protect them...it rained and it hailed and there were 40 mph winds...and we watched it all thanks to a park ranger named "Don Johnson"...we stayed out of the only bad weather that we encountered for the 11 days of riding...don't forget Spearfish Canyon SD...and other roads in the Black Hills...

Wyoming...Don't forget Devils Tower...Rte 14 and 14A and Big Horn National Forest...continually great...herds of antelope all day...one moose and a wild turkey...now on to Chief Joseph Scenic Byway...and Beartooth Pass...Wow...what incredibly fantastic scenery through this part of Wyoming and Montana...

...We are not done yet...

Yellowstone National Park...the first animals we saw were 4 large herds of Buffalo...they were everywhere...on the roads...on the shoulders...awesome....in an area called The Bleached Cliffs we used someone's viewing glasses and observed an eaglet in a nest on a cliff...down the road a piece...a moose....then...a grizzly bear and 2 young cubs...a touching moment...they were nursing...awesome...more elk...more buffalo and more antelope...and of course the great roads and scenery...

...Then a ride thru Flaming Gorge Utah...a 91 mile long reservoir...beautiful colors...with a bridge and a dam at the southern end...

Hope this makes you crave a road trip!

*******HAPPY TRAILS*******

AWARENESS
WARNING: This is a test of mind, body, and soul…

Do you know if the motorist next to you is impaired? Is there debris in the road around the next corner? Are you mentally ready for the journey? Are you physically ready for the elements? We know all about your soul.

These are thing that we all must keep in mind when were driving a car or riding a motorcycle. When driving your car you have chosen to put a protective shield around you. When you get on your motorcycle you have made the decision to take off the armor and enjoy the freedom it brings.

The biggest percentage of all accidents are preventable. We as motorists have all done stupid things; we eat, drink, and talk on the cell phone. And the list goes on and on. If people would just pay more attention to what they are doing then and only then will the high percentage of accidents go down.

The best advice I can give to any motorcyclist is to always ride at their skill level, and take a Riders safety course every two to three years. If you haven’t taken a Riders course please sign up for one, you will be a better and safer rider.

Your Safety Officer

2007 HOG Ridin’ the Rockies Touring Rally - Ride into Thin Air!
On the 25th through the 28th of June 1046+ people came together to celebrate this passion we all have for riding our motorcycles. 48 or so of those folks were from Arizona. The most riders from a single state were from Texas where over 160 of HOGs most dedicated folks made the trip to enjoy the mountains of the American west. Tim and Julie, Sarge and Joyce, Mike and Jeannie, and Tall John attended from Superstition HOG. A recap of each day follows.

Day One – Fort Collins –It was a little warm. 100 degrees is HOT according to the folks in Colorado. For us it was bearable and we made the most of it. After Check-in and the Group Riding Safety Briefings there was a Dealer Party at Thunder Mountain Harley-Davidson in Loveland with a band and lunch. Following that was the Event Kick-off dinner at the hotel which was great fun. Afterwards it was a blast hanging out and talking “ridin” in the hotel parking lot that was full of bikes and bikers. The estimated bike count was well over 750 (IMHO).

Day Two, - After a late breakfast and a bit of a safety/trip briefing, most of the Superstition HOG group and a few friends from Texas (Thom and Candy from Austin) headed up Big Thompson Canyon to Estes Park and then on through Rocky Mountain National Park on Trail Ridge Road. At times up on the top there were clouds so thick you couldn’t see ten feet in front of you. But when the clouds cleared there were views that some folks will never see in 10 lifetimes. After that it was down to US Highway 40 and over Berthoud Pass to Interstate 70. Topping off the day we went up through the Eisenhower Tunnel and then back down to Breckenridge arriving just before the sun set on the peaks to the west.

Day Three – We started out over Hoosier Pass on Colorado Highway 9 following that road to US Highway 24 east. We turned south towards Cripple Creek on a county road that Sarge later commented was probably the worst road he had ever ridden on. Arriving at Cripple Creek we were surprised to see streets that looked a little like Sturgis, with 100s of bikes lining the downtown area. Some had fun in the Casinos and others at the local tourist traps like the narrow gauge railroad that takes you up into the old mining areas and the museums full of antiques and memorabilia. We headed back via Colorado Highway 67 (a much better roadway) and 4 miles or so out of the town of Divide we saw a tornado form right in front of us. We made a quick group decision to “beat feet” to the west. Other than 30 miles or so of rain and some wind we got lucky; the tornado had decided to go the other way.

Day Four – The Aspen loop over Independence Pass has some of the most scenic views in the entire country. If there is ONE road you don't miss on your next trip to Colorado, this is THAT road. Some places here you can see for what seems to be forever, with jagged peaks and forested valleys on every side. After leaving this awesome scenery it was down Colorado highway 82 into Aspen and a bit of shopping in the downtown area for those so inclined. Then we continued traveling northwest on highway 82 with a brief stop at Aspen Valley Harley-Davidson to check out the latest t-shirts and stuff. After that we fired up the bikes and headed out on the I-70 though Glenwood Canyon and back to Breckenridge. That night there was a farewell reception where everyone had a great time, telling and hearing new stories of the road between new found friends and old riding partners.

If you have never experienced one of these Touring Rallies I can highly recommend you give it a try. Everywhere you look is Harley after Harley, and everyone is riding and having fun. In Colorado this year we really did "ride into thin air” at the 2007 Ridin' the Rockies HOG Rally.
