Winter Storage Tips

Each fall here at Birds of Prey we start getting inquiries about how to properly store bikes for the winter. Here are some helpful hints.

It's a good idea to change the engine oil and filter before storing your bike.

The byproducts of internal combustion produce water and acids, which may be damaging to the engines internals. Since the bike will be sitting all winter it's a good idea to do so full of fresh oil. It's a good time to change the primary and transmission fluids as well. Be sure to use the correct fluids and follow the instructions in the service manual.

Fill your fuel tank and add Sta-bil fuel stabilizer.

Run the engine long enough for the treated fuel to reach the carb or fuel injection system. For carb equipped models turn off the fuel petcock and run the bike till it quits. Leave the petcock off till you need to start the bike again. Over several months fuel can go stale to the point of becoming gummy, which clogs fuel systems. Hence, the use of fuel stabilizer.

Keep your battery charged.

Late model Harleys are equipped with sealed maintenance free batteries. These do not require adding distilled water. However they do require periodic charging. The simplest way to do so is by using a battery tender. If you don't already have one the part number is 94654-98. This charger allows you to maintain a proper charge year round. This handy little charger comes with a lead to attach to your battery. The charger plugs into the wall outlet. You just snap the two together and the charger takes care of the rest. It does not allow overcharging. You just unplug the leads when you want to ride and plug them back together when you return. You can use this system all year long. Your battery will last much longer using this system.

Check your tire pressure and correct if needed.

You should be doing this between rides anyway. Be sure to check again in the Spring.

Wash and wax.

This will protect your bikes finish from moisture and corrosion.

A storage cover is always a good idea.

Make sure you do not use a rain cover. They do not allow moisture from condensation to pass through. HD offers a sturdy cover that's just the ticket.

Now some notes of caution.

In the spring when you check your oil you may find a lower level. You changed or checked it before storage so it should be full. It's not. Assuming there is not a giant puddle on the garage floor just where did it go. It's in the engine's crankcase. Sportsters and Softails as well as some older models have the oil tank higher than the engine. Gravity works. These bikes can seep oil from the tank to the crankcase past the checkball. If you add oil before running these models you will overfill the system. Start them up and run them before you check the level. Follow the directions in your manual for the proper procedure for your model. When you start up the engine crankcase pressure will force the oil back to where it belongs. It may as well spit some out the air cleaner or breather tube. Other than being messy it's not harmful.

In conclusion I'll share with you what not to do. Some folks will start their bikes during the time it's being stored. They may feel the oil needs circulated, or the battery needs charged or they may just want to hear the pipes. This is a VERY BAD thing to do. First off the oil will need to reach 212 degrees F. before water and contaminates will burn off. It's almost impossible to reach that temperature at a standstill without overheating the motor. Air cooled V-Twin remember. Running an engine for a short time will add water and acids in the oil. Depending on the temperature you need to ride 15 miles or more to get the oil to that high of a temperature. In addition a bike that is at idle is actually discharging the battery. In order to charge the battery you need to reach at least 2000 rpm. Each time you start the bike without riding will discharge the battery. The best thing to do is to properly store the bike and leave it until you're ready to ride. It sounds like a lot of work to follow these suggestions, but it will payoff in the spring with no problems for the first ride. You do have another choice as well. Just ride all winter. With the advent of heated grips and electric clothing it's quite pleasant. Be careful and have fun. And just think of the bragging rights come spring.
