DIARY OF A MOTORCYCLE ADVENTURE

Start date August 21, 2007 Finish date Sept 15,

Part 2 Day 8 to 20

This is the continuation of a great story started in our September newsletter detailing the adventures of our own John Cat on his 6000 mile summer ride this year. The third and final part will be in the December Newsletter, so stay tuned! ed.

Day 8

I had some help today…everyone knows Kat, the Superstition HD motor clothes manager…well her “Ken doll” (husband) suggested to me to go thru the Rogue River Scenic Byway and the Rogue National Forest to get to Crater Lake, Oregon…well I took his advice... an excellent choice…thanks Ken… a beautiful road following the river and thru a Volcanic Scenic Byway... then to Crater Lake. This lake is the caldera of a volcano… there are no streams or rivers that feed it… the lake is replenished by rain and snow melt… the water is as blue as the bluest sky you have ever seen… reflections of the crater walls in the lake are seen as if it were the best of mirrors.. the whole area is just fantastic!!

Day 9

Today was going to be an easy travel day, from Bend ,Oregon to Leavenworth, Washington… just get on Route 97 North for 325 miles... so that’s what we did… segments of this highway have some interesting names… one is”The Blue Star Memorial Hwy” another is part of the Oregon scenic byway roads “Journey thru Time”... check them out on the internet… just cruising all day… Leavenworth ,Washington is like going to a Bavarian village in the Alps… the restaurants are Bavarian theme, but of course we opted for an Italian resturant...

Day 10

Today we meet with Marlene and Greg... first we take a ride across Washingtons lower cascades and across Stevens Pass in the Wenatchee National Forest… another beautiful road... we meet Marlene and Greg at a pre-determined location... then Greg takes us for a scenic ride in the Bellingham area (spell that backroads)… we arrive at their home and oh boy!!! Marlene has cooked a turkey breast and all the fixin's…. Thanksgiving came early this year….yummy!!

Day 11

It is raining today…so I took a bucket of water to the bike and gave it the first sponge bath of the trip!! No real ride today… but I had to start the bike and rode it 10 feet to get it back into the garage... hahaha… also went to Bellingham HD and bought a running light bulb… and will replace it tomorrow… another home cooked meal at the neighbors who ride Victory motorcycles... also some home made peach pie!!

Day 12

Breakfast was some great giant donuts from a local bakery!!! Then we went for a ride… Greg took us on some local roads for a tour of the area... around Lake Whatcom... thru some farmlands… there were awesome views of Mt. Baker… then 1 mile from the Canadian border we stopped at a dairy farm store, Edaleen dairy, here we had some really good farm fresh ice cream for lunch… then on to a butcher shop and.bought some large steaks and some crab cakes for the BBQ… a short stop at the Washington State HOG Rally at Western Washington College... it was very quiet there so back to Marlene and Gregs place… We will be on our way to the black hills of South Dakota tomorrow..it will take us 4 1/2 days if all goes according to plan…

Day 13

We have some 260 miles to go today..and it sure was a beautiful ride… first Greg took us thru some local backroads to start the day… a bunch of curves… we got to Washington Route 20..this area is known as “The American Alps”… the Upper Cascades Scenic Byway… awesome… along the Skagit River... up and up winding and climbing to Ross Lake... the water here is the greenest water I have ever seen... And down the other side...riding along the Methow River and Valley...then along the Columbia River…lots of bikes on these roads…another great day on the Harley!!! While on the road Jan got stung by a bee on her eyebrow... a couple where we stopped had some antiseptic... we also had some bee sting meds with us… after a little TLC we were back on our way… point of info, Wenatchee, WA is the apple capital of the world..

Day 14

Today we made a wrong turn and we rode 40 miles thru some awesome local backroads before we got on track… most are not aware that Washington State, in the Southeast section is a giant grain belt... we rode thru this for over 200 miles... rolling hills and grain for a long time… we got to Route12 in Idaho, just outside of Lewiston, we rode along the Snake River for some 40 miles and stayed in a town called Orofino… tomorrow we go to Lolo Pass and into Montana across the Continental Divide, which we have crossed a number of times on this trip.

Day 15

This is what curves are about… riding along the Snake, Clearwater, and Lochsa rivers for approx 150 miles… awesome cruising curves… smooth…round… flowing constant curves… beautiful… I could ride these till I drop!!! Jan (who doesn’t usually like curvy roads) said it was a beautiful ride… She has been riding curves all week and there are plenty more to come... And guess what?? Jan got stung by a bee again in the same place as before… she sure is a honey… Greg and Marlene had been on this road before and they love it… we rode to Belgrade, Montana and that’s that for today…

Day 16

We leave Belgrade with the threat of storms all day… we enter the North entrance of Yellowstone National Park…. no matter how many times you go there you will see something different... we stop at Mammoth Hot Springs..this is awesome… Greg takes us for a slow ride around the hot springs on a narrow road that you would think was for walking... very cool and great views of the springs… Greg leads us thru the park on the North side... great riding… we see moose and plenty of buffalo... we stop in Cooke City , MT… if you don’t need gas don’t buy it here $4 a gallon... we have lunch… I lead the rest of the way… we ride Chief Joseph Scenic Byway... Greg and I come to the conclusion that it’s like riding a river road without the river… down thru Cody... lightning is sighted to the West…we are going East…10 miles from our destination in Worland, Wy and here it comes, lightning, thunder, rain and hail and of course the accompanying strong gusty winds!!! With this storm following us all day we sure were lucky to only get caught in it for a short time… What a great day!!

Day 17

We head out to Deadwood,SD to meet Roger P… it’s a gloomy start... low clouds… 50 degrees… we go to Ten Sleep, WY… thru the canyon there.. Awesome ride… clouds covering the top of the canyon walls… this is on The Cloud Peak Scenic Byway… great ride up to 9666 foott elevation and down the other side... then to Devils Tower in SD…. Oh No !!! Thunder and lightning and rains start 2 miles from Gillette HD… we play tag with the storm all day... we wait and ride and wait and ride and stay out of the storm all day! We arrive and meet up with Roger at 6 pm in Cadillac Jacks Casino and Hotel. Roger had planned a party for 48 others who ride Harleys that he had worked with before retirement… Lots of fun!!!

Day18

A lovely day again… 58 to 75 degrees and lots of sun… Greg, Marlene, Jan and I ride over to Sturgis and meet a Superstition Hog member, Bruce Miller, who lives there in the summer… on our way to Devils Tower we stop in the small town of Alladin, WY, population 15... the general store has a potbelly stove that is 110 years old… some of us eat pie from the café…we go to Devils Tower National Monument Park today... not yesterday... what can I say? Also a stop at Prairie Dog Town in the park… these little critters bring smiles to all our faces… they have a fun personality… after that on to Spearfish Canyon... in this area lots of the movie Dances With Wolves was filmed… see you tomorrow.

Day 19

A day for sleeping… but Jan and I joined Roger and 7 other riders and rode to Black Hills HD in Rapid City… the first 7 miles was cold, 40 degrees, and the fog was thick... we got to the Harley shop and hung out for a while… had a free hot dog... they must have heard we were coming… Then I led the group for a ride up scenic Nemo Road... as we got back to Deadwood the temps dropped again and the fog was thick… Greg and Marlene stayed in Deadwood and did some local sightseeing and shopping… short day and to the bar we went…

Day 20

Today we head into the Black Hills higher elevation and stay in Custer tonight... things go astray due to the weather… 40 degrees and threat of rain… we head to Sturgis and buy some cheap sale rally t-shirts… then take a ride thru Vanocker Canyon, a relatively new road at 9 years old... beautiful… the mist starts again… we stop at a unique place called “Boondocks”... a fifties nostalgic stop for some hot drinks… we leave here and stop in Hill City for lunch… the Continental Café... a biker friendly place like most places in South Dakota… visit the Harley shop... the rain is more now… the temperature is 38 degrees and we have 10 miles to our room… lucky 10 miles again… we are told not to go to the Needles Hwy... the road is all iced up… so we go to our room... rain gets harder... that’s because it is mixed with sleet, hail and snow! The coldest I have been in 4 years (since I lived in New York)…ah! At last the hotel… 92 miles and 5 hours today!
