TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!

Tired of Summertime Service Waits?
So are we.

The High Desert & Birds of Prey Service Departments are thinking of introducing a new program called
First Come,
First Served Saturdays
.

Each Saturday, there would be no appointments scheduled; just bring you bike down and we'll work on it in the order it comes in.

What do you think of that idea?
GREAT- I will definately use that for my Services!
It's a pretty good idea - I might use something like that.
It's OK for some people but doesn't apply to me.
I don't like it; people should have to make appointments to get in for service.

This week's suggestion by Brandon Davis
Birds of Prey Harley-Davidson/Buell Chrome Consultant

"Have you ever gone out to the garage after a long winter and thought, 'Finally it is a nice day; I should ride!'.... You get all your gear on: chaps, the leather vest you always ride with, gloves and your favorite pair of boots. You roll your machine out to the side of the road... Put your shades on and hit the start button only to hear... CLICK-CLICK-CLICK... nothing..........

Frustrated you walk away.

There is a really good way to prevent this a dead battery: A Battery Tender Junior. 94654-98A. It is compatible with all Harley Davidson batteries and will not over charge the battery because it has a overcharge sensor that shuts it off.

It is very important to keep a charge on your batteries during storage or long periods of not riding. The Battery Tender Junior is compact, easy to install and with the battery charging harness it connects in a second. I like to say plug and walk: Plug it in and Walk away.

For only $39.95 you can't beat it!"

Spring Riding Tips
Assembled by High Desert Service Manager Shane Holloway

Chances are good with the incredibly cold weather this winter your motorcycle has found itself traveling no further than the garage. Following are some quick tips & suggestions for bringing your bike back out on the road after its long winter’s nap.

Check Your Machinery

Even though your bike may have been stored following winter storage guidelines and was in good working order when you retired it, a thorough check is an important part of that first spring ride. Pay particular attention to the following areas:

  • Brake & fluid
  • Tire conditions & pressure (check when cold)
  • Oil & other lubricants
  • Drive belt, chain, or shaft
  • Lights
  • Check your batter terminals (clean if necessary)
  • Check, charge, or install the battery
  • Check cables & lube

When in doubt, give us a call here at the dealership and our Harley-Davidson and Buell technicians will give your bike a thorough check. If you do under the mileage for a yearly service consider having a service done this time of year.

Be Aware of Road Conditions

Spring riding brings a whole new variety of road hazards to be aware of. Especially on that first spring ride, be sure to watch out for:

  • Ice and snow
It may be 50 degrees in the valley but as you ride in higher elevations, there is a good chance there will still be ice and snow, especially in shaded areas
  • Sand & Gravel
Be aware of sand especially. All winter long, snow trucks have been depositing sand on the road. Sand and gravel tends to gather in corners.
  • Rocks on the Road
Again, winter conditions cause the roads to be littler with debris, especially in less traveled areas. Be alert, or avoid the back roads the first few times out.
  • Mud
As things begin to thaw, be aware of mud near construction sites and fields. The trucks at these site drop mud, rocks, & debris on the road when exiting. At nighttime, when spring temperatures drop, the mud on the road can freeze, turning mud chunks into fairly substantial ice blocks.
  • Temperature Extremes
Spring weather is still very unpredictable. Be sure you pack or wear your cold weather and rain gear.
  • Other Drivers
Car and truck drivers are a short-memoried bunch. They have spent the last four months on road that have been virtually motorcycle free. They are out of the practice of watching out for two-wheeled vehicles. Be sure to exercise extra caution and alertness.
  • Your Riding
Be aware of your own lack of practice. If you haven’t ridden all winter, chances are you’re a bit rusty. Like roller skating or riding a bicycle, this too will pass. Your first time out re-familiarize yourself with your vehicle functions & hand controls and consider taking a shorter route.

Attitudes & Behavior

There is always risk when you get out and ride. Poor preparation amplifies that risk. Springtime is a notoriously challenging time for motorcyclists. It is wise to remember that it may take a few weeks back in the saddle to resume a high skill level and even longer to recover the skill attained at the end of last year’s riding season. Riding, while incredibly free and rewarding, comes with a level of responsibility.

A Quick Note about the Spring Service Rush

Each spring in the Service Department, the first sign of sun causes our phones to ring off the hook with people who want to get out and ride. Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate everyone all at once, a problem when the sunshine is so fickle. We strongly encourage you to get your bike into the Service Department now. On that first nice spring day, you can be out riding, not waiting days to get your bike in.

The 2006 Harley-Davidson VRSCR Street Rod

What it has always been is a sleek, fast machine with a big hunger for straightaway acceleration. The reason is easy to see. It’s right there at the center. A liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 60° V-Twin Revolution® powertrain. Dual overhead cams. Four-valve heads. Two aggressive-breathing velocity stacks housed in a massive air box. Wind the engine up to the redline and make short work of the next quarter mile and beyond. The rigid, hydro-formed frame puts all that power to thrilling use. We wanted stopping to be equally exhilarating as going. All VRSC bikes are now fitted with performance 4-piston caliper Brembo® brakes. With all these goodies to play with, we took the most award-winning Harley-Davidson® motorcycle down some new roads. No matter how you like to ride, with the additions of the Night Rod™ and Street Rod™ models, now there’s a VRSC bike that fits your style. But that’s not all that’s new for 2006. There’s also a 240mm rear tire kit available in late 2005 through Genuine Motor Parts and Accessories. Scorching asphalt has never been so much fun.

Feast your eyes on the new roadster-inspired VRSCR Street Rod.™ Consider yourself tempted. Now get ready to unleash 120 horses on some winding asphalt. Crack the throttle up to the retuned Revolution® engine’s 9,000-rpm redline and you get deep into one of motorcycling’s most satisfying powerbands. Hairpins are equally satisfying on a bike this agile. Inverted fork with sculpted triple clamp. Steep rake, cornering clearance and straight-shot dual pipes for 40° worth of lean. Mid-mount controls. Brembo® brakes. Staggered 10-Spoke wheels. And a big 5-gallon tank. Because for all its curb appeal, the Street Rod is built to be ridden long and hard, far from any curb.
