This Month's Question!
Q. I have a 40 hp mercury boat motor runs great but running a little too hot Ive changed the impeller already, and it seem a little down on power.
David S. Midland, MI
A. Is the tel-tale stream steady? Check the temp of the engine block and head. The temp of these componets is what matters. Does the engine run better before it warms up? If it doesnt then the temp is not effecting the running of the engine. The down on power problem could be related to something else. How are the plugs, is the fuel fresh? Is the prop in good shape, has the engine been sync and linked lately? Run the engine at 1000 rpms on a hose and pull the spark plug leads off at a time. Make sure all the cylinders make the engine drop in rpm. If not the engine is not running on all the cylinders. A hot enigine can hurt the heads, and it should be looked at.

These reminders state a consistent theme: Use common sense when on the water. If you feel it is dangerous, it probably is. Accidents result from a chain of circumstances or behavior. The boating does and don'ts will help you chart a course toward safe, enjoyable boating. Remember: Boat Smart from the Start.

* Do wear a life jacket. They float, you don't.
* Do know the water and environment you will be boating in.
* Do keep a good lookout while under way.
* Do shut your engines off when people are in the water near your boat.
* Do observe the nautical rules of the road.
* Do check the weather forecast before getting under way.
* Do keep a balanced load and a trim boat.
* Don't overload your boat.
* Don't stand in a small boat.
* Don't ride on the gunwale, bow, seat backs, or any place not designed for passengers.
