MAY HOGTIVITIES

May 3rd, Saturday, the Ladies of Harley will honor our four Junior Ladies of Harley. Chantal, Sierra, Piper, and Ashton. We will leave Cycle Connection at 9 a.m. on a ride to the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield. Then ride to Increadible Pizza for lunch. The H.O.G. Chapter will pay the girls way. These girls have Harley in their bloodlines and hopefully will be riding their own Harley's someday. They attend almost all of the L.O.H. meetings and events with their parent's and seem to really enjoy themselves. Spouse's are welcome since we need road captains for such a big group.

May 10th, Saturday, is the Annual Motorcycle Mania Swap Meet at Cycle Connection from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Clean out your closets and garage, put a price on the items and sell them to make your own money. Tables will be furnished. This is a Chapter Event. Also, Cycle Connection has a cook out at 11 a.m.

That same night is the Black and Blue Ball at John Q. Hammonds. Tickets available at Cycle Connection.

May 17th, Saturday, is the Annual Josh Hirsch Poker Ride. Sign in between 10-11 a.m. at Cycle Connection. All bikes are welcome. $5 per hand, prizes for best and worst hands. Also a 50-50 pot. This is a Chapter Event.
(Josh's life was taken as a young man. He is the son of Joyce and Jerry Hirsch, avid H.O.G. members. Joyce and Jerry began this ride to donate the money raised to the Hardship Fund for other's who need assistance in a trying time.)

May 18th, Sunday, is breakfast at Ryan's at 9 a.m. with a ride after.

May 20th, Tuesday, is the May Joplin H.O.G. Meeting at Cycle Connection in the H.O.G. Family Room at 7 p.m. There will be a potluck dinner. Meat furnished, please bring side dishes. Please come a little early to set up food. We may have visitor's from the Arkansas H.O.G. Chapter at the meeting. Please welcome any new members or visitor's.
Also Cycle Connection is beginning an All Bike Night the 3rd Tuesday of each month. This falls on this date. Welcome these biker's also and invite the Harley owner's to join our H.O.G. Chapter.

Memorial Day Weekend is open due to family events.

May 31st, Saturday, is a cook out at Cycle Connection at 11 a.m.

MEETING GREETER'S

The door greeter's for the April Meeting were David Howard and Steve Mounce. Volunteer's for the May Meeting are Claude Hatcher and Richard Legg. The greeter's pass out the meeting agenda and door prize tickets. Thanks so much!!

LOYALTY POINTS

A reminder to write your name on the sign-in sheet at meeting's and Chapter events. You will receive Loyalty points that will turn into cash!! If your spouse does not have her own bike, she can still become a National Associate Member using your VIN number. Then she will have her own National H.O.G. card and receive Loyalty points also. Remember to have a Cycle Connection employee swipe your Loyalty Card when you purchase an item. The amount you spend gives you points on your card. Thanks to Scott and Nancy Hutson, owner's of Cycle Connection, we are able to collect these Loyalty points and spend them on whatever we want. Not all Harley store owner's give this option and we really appreciate it.

Visit the Cycle Connection website frequently. See Cycle Connection events, view the monthly Chapter newsletter and see the Chapter event photo's on the photogallery site. www.cycleconnectionh-d.com

Group Riding Safety Tips

* Split large groups into smaller groups.

* When in a tight curve, the rider on the outside of the curve is required to give room to the rider on the inside, in case the curve is too tight to negotiate at that speed without excessive crowding.

* Use the buddy system when riding with a group. If your buddy must pull out of the group, pull off the road with him or her.

* Know the stopping power of your motorcycle. Seventy percent of the stopping power is in the front brake.

* Maintain a constant speed. This helps to prevent the "rubber band effect."

* Be aware of openings as you ride so that you will have a place to maneuver in case of an emergency. Also, be aware of the riders around you (especially the one to your side) and give each other as much room to move as possible in any situation.

* Always keep the group tight without crowding each other. Stay close through intersections and traffic lights, so the group doesn't get divided.

* If there is a vehicle that has to get onto the freeway, let that vehicle through and then close the gap as quickly as possible afterwards.

* If an exit is missed, stick together as a group, proceed to the next exit, then return to the correct exit.

* Never ride in someone's blind spot.

* Remember, each rider is responsible for their own safety.

* Remember, you are not safe from lightning on a motorcycle.

PAST EVENTS

The winner's of the Piece of the Pie Contest were Greg Short and Rick Cicero. The pie throwers were Paula Boyd and Steve Mounce. The money raised for the Hardship Fund was $180. Thank's to all you voted with your dollars and cents. It was great to see these guys get what was coming to them!!

The Spring Fever Ride was plagued by cold weather. There were four brave souls who rode. Greg Short, Mike Boyd, Bob Lupini, and Don Sherman. The other 25 went in cages. We shopped, ate, 2 rode a train, ate, several went on a ghost tour, Keith got a tat, ate again and 2 couples celebrated wedding anniversaries. Stayed overnight and had a really great time. We have decided to move the ride a couple of weeks later next year to a bit warmer weather. If you have not been on an overnight ride with the group you are missing out. We have more fun and excitement than you could ever believe. We have 2 more overnight ride's this year, Talimena Trail and Oklahoma City. Reserve your room with Paula at Cycle Connection.

A special note about the ride to Oklahoma City on September 13th. Paula has blocked 20 rooms at Econo Lodge. 405-278-7250. If you want one of the rooms, you must call and reserve it with your own credit card by August 29th. Be sure to tell them the rooms are blocked under Cycle Connection H.O.G. Chapter. And please notify Paula that you have reserved a room. 417-623-1054, Paula Boyd, Parts Department.

The Ladies of Harley rode to Schermerhorn Park in Galena for the April meeting and picnic. Some climbed the hill to visit the Nature Center which was very interesting if you are into triantula's, indoor bee hives and creepy snakes. Actually, it is one of the best Nature Center's in the area and is operated by volunteer's who give their time to answer questions. It is also a beautiful very old park on Shoal Creek.

The Ladies of Harley "Chain Gang" walked the road in front of Cycle Connection and picked up bags of trash. We would like to ask that you do not throw out bottles, cans, car tires, yellow pipes, or cell phones on this road!! We plan another clean up later in the year. Thanks to all who helped with this volunteer project.

MISSOURI H.O.G. RALLY

The website is open for reservations now for the Missouri H.O.G. rally in Springfield. www.mostatehogrally.com. The contact number is 417-725-4508. Deadline for pre-registration is July 18th. You can reserve on the website by credit card or by printing out the form and mailing with a check. We hope to have a large group from our Chapter participating. We have volunteered to assist with the bike games. We will leave as a group on Saturday morning. There are plenty of motels if you plan on staying the night but we are not making room reservations thru Cycle Connection. You must reserve a room yourself.

CHAPTER BYLAW'S

The Bylaw's Committee is working on Chapter Bylaw's. Our Chapter must adhere to the National H.O.G. Charter and these bylaws are things that our Chapter does that other Chapter's may not do the same way. They will be submitted to the Officer's and Sponsor and after being agreed upon or changed by the Officer's and Sponsor then we will give a copy of the bylaw's to each member.
Also, the Primary Officer's (Director, Assistant Director, and Secretary/Treasurer) will be attending the Primary Officer's Training in May. They will accumulate information from instructor's and other Chapter's to help our Chapter be a better, bigger, enthusiastic group of Harley rider's.
