Annual Memorial Day Ride To Remember Dedicated To Local Injured Soldier
May 26, 2008 [GOWANDA, NY] - Nearly 400 motorcyclists, many of them veterans, from across Western New York gathered at Gowanda Harley-Davidson on Memorial Day to participate in the annual “Ride To Remember” Prior to embarking on the rolling remembrance, John Reid, Gowanda Harley-Davidson President and himself a Vietnam veteran, dedicated this year’s ride to Sgt. James T. Hackemer of Collins, NY.

“We are truly amazed by our men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan who risk their lives to go out on patrol,” spoke Reid. “We truly do live in the land of the free, because of the brave.”

Sgt. Hackemer was critically injured in Iraq on March 14, 2008 while on patrol when the vehicle he was riding in hit a roadside bomb. As a result he has lost the use of both his legs and has suffered a traumatic brain injury. He is currently undergoing treatment at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA.
From the dealership, located at 2535 Gowanda Zoar Rd., the riders in motorcycle parade honored the Hackemer family, including his wife Alycia and two young daughters, Kaelynn and Addison by raising over $1,300 in monetary donations. The parade of motorcycles then passed by their home with a salute of thundering v-twin engines together with a sea of American, P.O.W. and military flags proudly flying from the backs of many bikes. In addition, the members of the Erie County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Committee also donated $500 to the Hackemer family.

Receiving cheers from local residents along the roadside, the motorcycles stretched out for well over a mile along Route 39, before rolling into the Erie County Vietnam Veterans Memorial located within Sprague Brook Park in Glenwood, New York. Joined by an honor guard and several guest speakers, a proper Memorial Day service was lead by former Erie County Veterans Services Director, Lou Palma to pay respect to those who gave their lives for our country.
“On Memorial Day we honor our true heroes. We honor our men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice. We respect them and they will forever live on in our hearts,” solemnly spoke, Palma.

A benefit party is planned to support Sgt. James Hackemer and his family on June 29, 2008, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm at the Gowanda Moose Club, 201 Aldrich St., Gowanda, New York. Tickets are a $20 donation.
