Well, we are just back from an exciting weekend in Pomona, California. It seems that my Road Glide this last year posted one of the 10 fastest times on the Tessi Dyno Drag machine (9.6 seconds, 152 mph). As a result, they invited us to the first National Dyno Drag finals. Easy Rider was putting up a $10,000 purse for the winners and ESPN was there for an upcoming special.

When I received the invitation, I had mixed feelings: I was excited about the invitation and about the prospect of “gentlemen’s” racing, yet I also felt a little saddened recognizing that I had just sold that bike about two months earlier. I explained our situation to the promoter and stated that we were in the process of building out our next bike (a 2003 Dyna Low rider) and wondered if that would be acceptable. After reviewing our two years run results and contacting some of the other competitors, they allowed us in.

So in December we were busier than old Saint Nick himself. It was off to the shop to select the bike, figure out engine modifications, pipes, gearing, cams, chain versus belt drive, etc…

The performance consulting crew kicked in and three days before the race, the engine was finished. After putting some three hundred miles on the bike we noted heavy oil burn off during deceleration (2 quarts in 200 miles). So back into the shop it went, heads, gaskets, and rings all torn down and replaced. We fixed the oil leak, and in the next 100 miles we had a compression leak. This back and forth is just the normal course of business when building a race application engine.

Its now the day before the races, we have taken the engine apart at least three times, and we are just now putting the bike on the dyno machine. There were a lot of long tired faces in the shop that 7:00 am, but we were all working towards a goal together. Into the Dyno room the Low Rider went. Some three hours later it came out. Our 117 cubic inch engine produced 138 horsepower and 145 lbs. of torque – respectable I thought.

At 5:00am the next day we left for Pomona. It was a wet and windy ride down – but we made good time. When we arrived, we met the other contestants, and now I know why they didn’t mind if we entered a bike that we were just building. These guys were professional racers! Hal’s H-D of Milwaukee sent out their truck, two motorcycles, two technicians, and their lead rider in the Buell race division for this “gentlemen’s” race. St. Petersburg , Florida was also well represented by two race teams: one sponsored by the dealership and another by a private party. A father and son race shop from Illinois was there, as well.

It was three hours of practice runs and tuning on Friday, followed by a day at the races on Saturday. I won’t go into all the details of how the most favored bike (128 cubic inches and 148 horsepower) fell out as a result of his chain breaking, or how effective an air shift kit is as compared to a 26 year old kid running on adrenalin and what the chance of a lifetime can do.

At the end of the day, we finshed a respectable sixth place. Had our reaction time been a little quicker like it was the day before, we would have finished second. But life is full of “would have” and “could have’s”. The bike is in the shop now, and we are planning out the changes that we are going to do to make it more competitive and better represent the shop and those of you that support the shop. Come by, see the bike, hear it fire up. If you have time, listen to more of the stories that came out of our trip.
