  • Stimulus Plan
    What's in it for Motorcycles?
if you buy a new motorcycle, car, light truck, sport utility, or recreational vehicle after Feb. 17 and before Dec. 31, 2009, you may be able to deduct the state and local taxes you paid with your purchase. Sorry, used motorcycles don't count.

You don't even have to itemize your deductions to get this benefit, but there are two important limitations:
  • You can only deduct taxes paid on the first $49,500 of the vehicle's price.
  • The tax break starts shrinking once your income hits $125,000 for singles and $250,000 for married couples.

Of course you should talk to a professional tax accountant for details pertaining to your specific circumstances.

And now some toys to stimulate your senses :)

  • 2009 BMW S1000RR
    Begins Production
It's February 2009 and a batch of street production BMW S1000RR's ready for delivery?

Almost a year ago we noted - "details of the S1000RR are still a little vague, we can tell you that it adopts the successful formula of an inline-Four engine with a target of 190 crankshaft horsepower and 190kg (419lbs).

BMW intends to enter World Superbike competition in 2009 with its S1000RR. It will build 1000 of the new literbikes by the end of 2009 to meet homologation requirements for this production-based class."

Fast Forward and get ready for racing action as BMW Motorrad prepares for the first race of the 2009 World Superbike Championship in Philip Island.
The racing bikes will be fairly close to serial production models, allowing for the greater audience identification characteristic of the sport. Behind the scenes meanwhile, production of the serial machine is getting underway: the BMW S 1000 RR.

The package of this completely newly developed motorcycle with its 999cc in-line 4-cylinder engine is very compact and light. The dry weight of the motorcycle is 183 kg (403 lbs).
A completely new, recently developed sports ABS featuring four different modes as well as the dynamic traction control system (DTC) will be available. for the Supersports BMW S 1000 RR. The functional principle of the traction control system has been borrowed directly from racing.

The distinctive design of the S 1000 RR reflects the general style of the segment but also clearly represents the brand BMW.

The new S 1000 RR will be available in the four finishes Mineral Silver metallic, Acid Green metallic, Thunder Grey metallic and - based on the BMW Motorrad racing colors - Alpine White/Lupine Blue/Magma Red.

Both its supreme performance figures and its outstanding riding properties make the BMW S 1000 RR an extremely attractive offer in the Supersports segment.

The engine has a very compact cylinder head and is narrow in shape. The valves are activated by means of very small, light cam followers, virtually at Formula 1 level in terms of their dimensions.

This construction ensures very high engine speeds and allows maximum freedom in engine design in terms of torque and output.

    BMW K1300S/K1300GT
    Evolution of Design
BMW made a mild splash at the INTERMOT show in Cologne, Germany, last October with restyled and re-engineered K-series motorcycles. The three new models—the K1300S, K1300R and K1300GT—build on the old models' strengths while minimizing some of their shortcomings.

The über-powerful K1300S, touted as the lightest (503 pounds dry) and most-powerful bike in a class that includes Suzuki's legendary 2008 Hayabusa and Kawasaki's 2008 ZX-14, gets improvements to make it better-handling, faster and lighter than the 2008 K1200S it replaces. The lower A-arm in the Hossack-type front suspension is now aluminum alloy, reducing unsprung weight, while the chassis has slightly revised steering geometry and a .6-inch longer, 62.4-inch wheelbase.

The new bodywork is slimmer and more aggressive-looking. BMW's motorcycle designer, David Robb, said that the styling changes had to be noticeable but logical: "It shouldn't look like you just put a costume nose on the bikes."

More air flows to the engine through a revised intake, where it is put to good use in the bored-and-stroked, 1293cc inline-Four. The engine yields a claimed 175 hp, 7 more than the K1200S, and peak power is reached 1000 rpm sooner, at 9250 rpm, with more torque all through the rev range. The clutch and gearbox also have been reworked for better shifting, and the optional speed-shift system (allowing clutchless shifts) from the HP2 is available.

Another interesting option is the new electronically adjustable suspension that allows the rider to change the rear spring's actual rate in addition to preload and damping.

And... wait for it... BMW has put the turn signal switch on a traditional button on the left handlebar. Why was it never a problem for Harley Davidson?

The K1300GT gets the K1300S' drivetrain, optimized for its sport-touring mission. Power is 160 hp—up 8 hp over the K1200GT—with more torque on tap above 3500 rpm than before. Other than a few cosmetics the bike's appearance remains the same.

The K1300R will not be coming to the US market. Both the K1300S and K1300GT are on the floor.

DUCATI 1198/1198S - Is the Press Biased
OR, Is this THE Bike to Own?
With all the articles hitting the web and in print it is hard to miss the reviews for the Ducati 1198. Attached is a sampling from MCNs Chief Road Tester, Trevor Franklin, at the Circuito de Algarve near Portimao, Portugal.

We have 1198's on the floor so come and judge for yourself

Here’s what Trevor has to say:

“While the new 1198 retains the silhouette of the outgoing 1098 the bike is completely new. Most significantly the 1198S now comes with Ducati’s traction control (DTC), where previously it was only available on the $40,000 race ready 1098R. Quite simply it’s brilliant.

"Ducati have altered the way the traction control works: on the 1098R the bike had to run open race pipes with no catalytic converter because the traction control system retarded the ignition before finally cutting the sparks completely. This meant the fuel injection continued to pump fuel through the engine which would have damaged the catalytic converter in the standard road pipes.

"On the 1198S the traction control system works by firstly retarding the ignition and then, if the system detects major wheel spin, it now stops the fuel injection from working and therefore no fuel can enter the exhaust pipe and the catalytic converter remains safe.

“The other major changes to the engine are new lighter crank cases which save in the region of 3kgs over the old. The cases are the same as the 848 enabled by a new casting process which removes any air bubbles or gases in the aluminium castings. There is also a reduction in the amount of aluminium material used to make up the cases.

“The 1198/1198S now produce a claimed 170bhp at the crank. This increase in performance comes courtesy of the bore and stroke previously seen on the 1098R which means that the bore and stroke is now 106mm x 67.9mm.

"As a result there is also an increase in torque which is really noticeable when driving out of the slower turns. You can also feel the traction control working before the activation lights situated on the dash tell you it’s doing so.

“The handling is much the same as the 1098 that the new bikes replace. It’s agile and easy to push through fast corners. Ducati has once again made it’s legendary V-twin superbikes perform like no other V-twin.”

Add your 2 cents. Ride one home and post to every forum on earth. Call 203-740-1270 ext 118 or email 1198 Test Rider and get your name in writing.
