2009 Buell® 1125R BUILT
FROM
THE
RIDER
DOWN
For
most
superbike
manufacturers,
engineering
the
perfect
sportbike
begins
with
a
focus
on
the
machine.
That’s
not
the
case
with
Buell.
For
us,
it
all
begins
with
the
rider.
Take
a
look
at
the
Buell®
1125R.
Everything
on
this
bike
is
there
to
give
you
more
feel,
more
control
and
more
confidence.
It
features
intuitive
handling,
an
ideal
rider
environment
and
a
broad,
predictable
powerband,
compliments
of
the
light
and
compact
1,125
cubic-centimeter
liquid-cooled,
DOHC
V-twin.
It’s
all
there
for
a
reason.
And
that
reason
is
you.

2009 Buell® Ulysses®
XB12XT CONTINENT
CARVER
Ever
go
touring
on
a
sportbike?
Want
to?
This
is
the
Buell®
Ulysses®
XB12XT,
an
adventure
sport
touring
motorcycle
designed
for
riders
who
refuse
to
accept
the
notion
that
comfort
and
practicality
have
to
come
with
sacrifices.
Across
town
or
across
country,
this
bike
does
it
all.
It
combines
nimble
handling
and
a
perfectly
tuned,
sport-inspired
suspension
with
a
smooth,
reliable
1,203
cubic-centimeter
air-cooled
engine.
But
it
doesn’t
end
there.
We
made
standard
all
the
things
you’d
end
up
spending
money
on
anyway,
like
side
and
top
cases,
heated
grips
and
a
tall
windscreen.
All
you
need
now
are
more
vacation
days.

DIRECTOR’S
CORNER
The
recent
spell
of
decent
riding
weather
witnessed
a
flurry
of
bundled
up
bikers
rolling
on
the
throttle
rumbling
from
intersection
to
intersection.
Eyes
watering,
knees
knocking
with
rosy
red
cheeks
exposed
to
still
very
cool
temperatures.
By
far
the
vast
majority
of
participants
in
this
polar
experience
are
Harley-Davidson(R)
riders.
Perhaps
partially
because
the
majority
of
bikes
on
the
road
are
Harley-Davidson(R)
or
perhaps
riders
most
passionate
about
motorcycles
are
Harley-Davidson(R)
riders.
So
what
is
it
about
riding
a
motorcycle
that
prompts
a
normally
rational
individual
to
leave
the
warmth,
security
and
comfort
of
four
wheels
to
dress
up
and
jump
onto
two?
There
are
any
numbers
of
reasons;
however
there
is
only
one
that
really
matters.
Riding
brings
a
smile
to
your
face!
Riding
a
Harley-Davidson(R)
brings
a
smile
to
your
face.
Simple
--
How
can
you
be
angry,
stressed
out
or
agitated
with
a
smile
on
your
face.
The
great
out
doors,
fresh
air
are
mental
therapy
that
help
melt
away
winters
blues.
A
great
break
if
only
for
a
few
days
before
the
next
blast
of
winter.
I
would
be
wrong
not
to
incude
all
and
every
motorcyclist
as
a
thrill
seeker/adventurer.
Individual
preference
provides
each
of
us
the
opportunity
to
express
ourselves.
There
is
not
a
motorcycle
manufactured
that
does
not
have
a
following
or
ownership
group
loyal
to
that
specific
brand.
Manufacturers
have
gone
to
great
lengths
to
provide
us
with
exactly
what
we
want.
Harley-Davidson(R)
Buell(R)
has
been
and
continues
to
be
the
most
successful.
This
is
obvious
through
the
continually
expanding
product
line,
the
number
of
Harley-Davidson(R)
riders
and
the
lengths
the
competition
has
gone
through
to
imitate
what
simply
cannot
be
duplicated.
In
case
you
were
wondering,
I
have
owned
Ducati,
Kawasaki,
Honda,
Suzuki
and
Yamaha.
Dress
up
-
ride
safe
and
smile
your
worries
away.

SAFE
RIDING
TIPS
by
Ray
Koop |
"Ninety
percent
of
all
motorcycle
crashes
happen
within
the
first
hour
of
riding;
fifty
percent
happen
within
the
first
six
minutes."
Mindset
and
concentration
are
of
utmost
importance
when
riding
a
motorcycle.
Take
a
minute
to
focus
before
you
get
on
the
bike.
It
could
save
your
life!
Roads
of
Hazard:
While
most
riders
recognize
that
roads
and
bridges
become
more
hazardous
when
wet
and
take
due
caution,
it's
also
important
to
note
that
different
road
surfaces
present
their
own
set
of
unique
hazards.
Adjust
your
riding
to
the
type
of
surface
you
are
rolling
on: Asphalt-
Thanks
to
cold
winters,
asphalt
can
buckle
or
heave
with
frost,
or
break
up
to
cause
some
serious
pot
holes.
Additionally,
ruts
in
the
road
can
make
it
difficult
to
steer,
as
can
wet
asphalt
which
can
be
slippery. Painted
Lines
-
Avoid
riding
on
painted
lines,
especially
when
breaking
or
turning.
In
dry
conditions,
the
paint
offers
you
less
traction
than
the
road,
and
in
wet
conditions
can
be
quite
slippery. Cement
-
This
surface
is
typically
less
slippery
than
asphalt,
but
it
still
has
its
own
challenges.
Cement
roads
are
made
with
grooves
to
drain
water,
usually
off
to
the
side.
However,
some
times
these
run-off
groves
can
be
diffiulct
to
steer
in
if
they
are
running
with
the
direction
of
your
travel.
Also,
cement
roads
are
poured
in
sections
which
can
heave
up
or
down
relative
to
other
sections.
Be
careful
when
steering
across
unseen
sections
of
the
cement. Slippery
when
wet
-
Be
extra
cautious
after
the
first
rainfall
following
a
dry
spell.
Within
the
first
half
hour,
much
of
the
oil
that
has
accumulated
on
the
road
comes
up
which
makes
for
very
slippery
and
dangerous
conditions.
In
fact,
wet
conditions
should
alsways
be
reason
for
extra
caution.
Drive
defensively
-
Carry
the
owner's
manual
and
recommended
tools
and
spare
parts
on
your
motorcycle.
Maintain
a
safe
speed
that
is
consistent
with
the
driving
conditions
and
your
skills.
Assume
other
drivers
don't
see
you
and
position
yourself
to
be
seen.
Ride
in
the
portion
of
the
lane
where
you'll
most
likely
be
seen
and
avoid
a
vehicle's
blind
spot.
Beware
of
oncoming
left
turners
-
Be
especially
alert
at
intersections.
Slow
down
before
you
enter
an
intersection
and
always
have
an
escape
route
planned.
If
changing
lanes,
check
your
mirrors,
signal
and
make
a
visual
check
first.
Dont
tailgate
and
pass
only
when
it
is
safe
to
do
so.
Do
not
pass
or
ride
on
the
shoulder.
Be
Noticeable
-
Many
motorcycle
accidents
happen
because
car
drivers
did
not
see
the
motorcyclist.
So
consider
wearing
bright
or
flourescent
clothing,
light
or
white
coloured
helmets,
and
using
daytime
headlights
while
riding.
A
motorcycle
has
a
smaller
profile
than
a
car
of
truck,
so
take
extra
measures
to
ensure
that
others
know
you
are
there.
Also
make
sure
you
drive
defensiely.
Keep
aware
of
potential
blind
spots,
and
adjust
your
driving
according
to
the
weather
conditions.
Don't
forget
about
your
clothing
-
Protective
clothing
can
protect
you
from
weather
and
debris
while
riding
and
can
also
serve
as
a
buffer
in
a
crash.
Even
in
hot
weather,
wear
gloves,
boots,
long
pants
and
a
jacket
specifically
designed
for
motorcycling.
Look
ahead,
plan
ahead
-
Look
as
far
down
the
road
as
you
can.
Make
sure
you
are
constantly
scanning
for
things
to
avoid,
like
bumps,
garbage,
pot
holes,
cracks,
stones,
spills
and
puddles
etc.
Also
observing
how
other
vehiclels
are
reacting
to
the
road
allows
you
to
plan
ahead
for
safety.
Practice
makes
perfect!-
Try
to
practice
various
riding
skills
such
as
emergency
braking,
swerving,
slow
turns,
and
smooth
throttle
operation.
It's
a
good
idea
to
set
aside
some
regular
time
on
a
weekly
basis
where
you
can
practice
safety
maneuvers
in
an
area
devoid
of
people
and
traffic
as
you
learn
to
ride.
Go
solo
for
a
while
-
New
riders
should
not
carry
passengers
until
they
are
"very"
comfortable
with
their
new
motorcycle;
this
usually
takes
about
a
year.

OUR
FIRST
POKER
RUN
by
Stan
Giles
|
|
What
a
great
chapter
we
have
in
Langley!
Marlene
and
I
experienced
our
first
poker
run
to
Kamloops
in
May
2008.
With
approximately
4
or
5
years
of
riding
experience
to
draw
upon,
I
felt
comfortable
under
taking
this
weekend
adventure.
We
set
off
at
10:30
a.m.
from
the
Barnes
Harley-Davidson(R)
Buell(R)
Dealership
with
10
or
11
bikes.
The
weather
was
co-operating
with
no
rain
in
sight.
Cam
was
our
road
Captain,
with
Rose
providing
meaningful
guidance
to
keep
us
together.
Our
first
stop
was
Hope.
Coffee
and
gas
purchased,
necessities
attended
to,
and
then
on
to
Lytton.
Cam
had
arranged
a
little
tour
around
the
back
hills
of
Lytton.
With
the
assistance
of
some
local
ladies,
we
managed
to
located
the
famous
"enter
at
your
own
risk"
ranch.
This
is
a
ranch
owned
by
a
local
handyman
that
creates
larger
than
life
motorcycles
and
interesting
works
of
art
made
out
of
all
kinds
of
spare
parts.
Some
large
(10
x
16)
and
some
small.
It
was
a
very
interesting
tour.
Immediately
upon
entering
through
the
gates
into
the
ranch
you
are
greeted
by
a
display
of
dozens
of
tombstones
with
though
provoking
poems
written
on
them.
Antique
machinery
dots
the
hilside
My
bride
had
to
use
the
loo,
and
with
some
investigative
work
found
an
old
wooden
outhouse
behind
a
shed.
The
ladies
powder
room
consisted
of
(dig
this),
electric
lights
and
a
flashlight
in
case
of
emergency!
There
was
also
a
two-foot
high
stack
of
books
plus
a
variety
of
magazines.
In
case
you
had
a
bowel
problem,
about
50
rolls
of
toilet
paper
where
within
arms
reach.
There
was
a
large
mirror
on
the
wall
to
admire
yourself
while
seated.
Last
but
not
least
a
phone
sat
on
the
floor
-
to
call
for
assistance,
I
guess.
Marlene
was
so
amazed
and
impressed.
I
had
a
heck
of
a
time
getting
her
out
of
there.
Duties
attended
to
and
photographs
taken,
the
gang
rounded
up,
and
we're
back
on
the
highway
towards
Kamloops.
I
had
driven
the
Fraser
Canyon
thousands
of
times,
but
never
on
a
motorcyle,
what
an
eye
opener.
Our
group
met
up
with
other
H.O.G.
family
members
from
all
over
British
Columbia
and
Washington
at
the
Kamloops
Harley-Davidson
dealership
for
a
late
BBQ
lunch.
Then
it
was
time
to
check
in
at
the
motel
not
far
from
the
dealership.
Everyone
gave
their
Harley-Davidson
a
quick
wipe
to
get
the
worst
of
the
bugs
off.
Not
to
get
too
comfortable
for
too
long,
we
soon
rode
back
to
the
dealership
to
be
joined
by
hundreds
of
other
H.O.G
members.
All
of
the
participants
where
then
provided
with
an
escorted
parade
by
the
Kamloops
Royal
Canadian
Mounted
Police.
Riding
in
a
parade
around
the
town
at
5
mph,
talk
about
"chestnuts
roasting
on
an
open
fire",
I
was
relieved
when
the
parade
was
over.
Now
I
grind
when
I
walk!
Our
group
ended
up
at
Roy
&
Juanita's
little
hide
away
for
some
food
and
a
chance
to
cool
down
the
hot
spots
Saturday
8:00
A.M.
-
draw
for
our
second
card
and
breakfast
in
Kamloops
and
then
we're
off
to
the
Little
Fort,
Lone
Butte,
Clinton
and
then
Ashcroft
for
the
evening.
The
Kamloops
Chapter
of
H.O.G
put
on
a
lovely
supper
in
the
Ashcroft
Arena.
We
enjoyed
a
few
beverages
and
had
a
few
dances
in
the
company
of
other
family
H.O.G.
members.
Breakfast
on
Sunday
moring
in
Cache
Creek
and
then
back
down
the
Canyon
to
Langley.
The
magic
part
of
this
ride
-
we
all
had
lots
of
fun
and
we
raised
lots
of
money
for
muscular
dystrophy.
"Thank
you"
to
Kamloops
H.O.G.
for
a
great
event.
Until
