NOTES FROM THE SERVICE DEPT.
Spring time is here, and with spring time, we in the Service Department often see something worth talking about with our valued customers and friends. What we're referring to is accidents due to worn tires. The Harley-Davidson Service Manual for 2009 Touring, Softail, Dyna, Sportster, and V Rods recommend replacement at 1/32nds of an inch.

The main issue we have with this is that the Wisconsin and Minnesota legal tread limit is 2/32nds. We recently called the Wisconsin State Patrol and to get the low down. The Officer we spoke to told us that the fine is "$186.00 plus any other fines uncured, and there are always other fines. Along with the fine, the bike will be towed as it is not legal for the road." Officers usually don’t pull people over for tire tread depth, however, once you are pulled over for any other reason, you are fair game.

The second major issue that we have with tire tread depth is the amount of bikes that come in due to accidents in the spring. A large number of these accidents are caused by a combination of low tread depth (not bald, just low), low tire pressure, and sand/ salt/ or Ice. We at St. Croix Harley Davidson recommend tire replacement when your tire tread is 3/32nds of an inch. To the average person, 2/32nds of an inch is Greek. To put is as simply as we can...If you hold a new state quarter in the tread in the center of the tire, you will be able to completely see "QUARTER DOLLAR" on the bottom of the coin. 3/32nds which is our recommended tread replacement will cover up the "TER DO" in QUARTER DOLLAR".

The second thing to check on your tires is to make sure the air pressure is correct. The Owners Manual and Service Manual will give you the correct pressures for your tires as each type of bike is different, along with load on bike. Running a tire under inflated will cause handling Issues, vibrations, and excessive or unusual wear. Running a tire over inflated will also cause handling and wear issues.

The last thing we want to touch on is the over all condition of tires. Tires that are weather checked, over or around five years old, or are choppy should also be replaced. Using the date code on the side of the tire, you will be able to tell the week and year that a tire was made. The date code is a four digit number that is stamped in the sidewall of the tire. The first two numbers are the week and the second two are the year, therefore 2608 would have been made the 26th week of 2008.

As always, if you have any questions about tread depth, air pressures or the over all condition of your tires, please feel free to call and talk with one of our Service Advisors.

APRIL IS “CHECK YOUR HELMET MONTH”

Motorcycle riding season is upon us, but before you throw a leg over your Harley for that first spring ride, make sure your helmet is ready for riding. April is “Check Your Helmet Month” and motorcyclists are reminded of the importance of keeping your safety gear in good order and proper working condition.

A good, well-fitted helmet is your most important piece of safety equipment, and riders should take a few simple steps to ensure their helmets are road-ready.

In order to be effective and provide maximum protection, a helmet must fit properly. A good fitting helmet should rest one inch above your eyebrows and shouldn't roll forward or sideways on your head.

Helmets don’t get better with age. Glues, resins and other materials break down over time and render your helmet less effective. Manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 3-5 years.

A clean and well cared for helmet will protect better and last longer. Use a mild soap to wash the outer shell and internal liners. Never use solvents or chemicals for cleaning as they can destroy protective coatings.

Also, remember that mirrors, turn signals and sissy bars are not helmet-hangers, and can damage the impact absorbing liner inside.

For your comfort and safety, bring your helmet in this month for a free safety inspection. Our MotorClothes Specialists can provide detailed information about helmet fit, care and replacement.
