Here is a story written by Bob Hofmeister about one of his first riding experiences around 1935. Pictured is a 1917 Harley-Davidson model J.D. (the same year Bob was born). It is very similar to the first motorcycle Bob ever owned.

Chain Gang – Farmer, Dad & I

During the era of my first motorcycle (a 1922 Harley J.D.) my parents were involved in a car crash. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt but the car body was. My dad got the notion that he could possibly locate a used body from an auto salvage yard that would fit the family car – a 1927 Studabaker Commander.

I proposed that dad and I could mount the Harley and on this particular day (nice weather, and the thrill machine) head out to Anoka where he thought there was a possibility of a successful search – my dad and I.

We were clipping along, probably at a sane 40-45 M.P.H. Suddenly the engine revved up and simultaneously I heard something hit the pavement. I realized the rear chain broke and the countershaft sprocket had thrown the chain onto the pavement. The spot (after we walked back to retrieve the chain) was a white mark on the blacktop.

Dad and I pushed the bike to the nearest farm home – about several blocks – and targeted a building that looked like the farm shop. A knock on the door was kindly answered by the farmer. We explained our predicament and entered the shop to see what he had to work with. I asked to see his nail collection to pick a nail that had a shank diameter the same size as the chain pin. He had a perfect fitting nail. I sawed it to the proper length and with a ball pien hammer riveted the broken link. The connecter link had not been damaged so I was able to open the chain up to reinstall it on the bike. We were back in business.

This rigmarole took some time. By the time it was finished, we were too late to go body hunting so we reversed our direction and went home. Everyone would know that a nail is not nearly as strong as a regular chain pin, so I babied the throttle to keep us out of trouble (needing to redo the procedure) without our ally, the farmer.

We got home without chain trouble, but in the process I found out that the rear sprocket was dished and caused the rear chain to run so close to the front chain that they made contact with each other, rubbing the riveting off and causing the break.

We were home now but I needed to know how weak the “Chain-Gang” repair was. I dumped the clutch several times with a heavy throttle and I couldn’t break it. I used the repaired chain to ride to the motorcycle shop to buy a proper connector link and a correct rear sprocket (a good insurance move for more riding). My hats off to the chain gang – the farmer, dad, and myself – a small but effective gang.
