HARLEY MUSEUM RIDE
July 16th thru 19th
If you are like me, and didn't make it to Milwaukee last year, you haven't seen the new Harley-Davidson Museum. Or maybe you did go last year, but would like to see it again. In either case, join Woody & I for a GKC HOG Chapter ride in July to see not only the museum, but tours through some of the Harley plants in Milwaukee. The ride will leave on Thursday, July 16th and ride straight through to Milwaukee. Now I know that is a long way but it is do-able and necessary for the time we have to do all the things we want to do there. Friday, Leah Whaley our regional HOG rep., will be with us all day to guide us to the Harley plants for tours and show us some of the sites of Milwaukee. Saturday morning we will head over to the museum, with lunch at the museum. We will leave Milwaukee from the museum in the afternoon and ride to Springfield, Ill. to spend the night, putting us a little closer to home for the ride back to KC on Sunday. Room blocks have been made at: Super 8-Racine, Wisconsin Thurs & Fri. July 16th. & 17th. (262)884-0486 Rates are $54.00/Thurs. & $59.00/Fri. These are blocked under Simpson Comfort Suites-Springfield, Ill. Saturday July 18th. (217)753-4000 Rates are $84.15 These are blocked under GKC HOG group #2369 These will only be held till June 18th. Please don't wait too long to reserve your room, as they are limited. Please e-mail me with your name & phone after you have made your reservations. We are trying to make some special arrangements with the museum and the plants, but they need a rough head count for them.

H.O.G. History
So last month I found an article I wanted to reprint in the May 1994 newsletter. That particular newsletter turned out to be a treasure chest full of good stuff, because I have found something else I want to reprint for everyone.
This is something that was originally printed in the Festus, MO Chapter's newsletter, and then reprinted in ours. With our busiest season upon us it seams appropriate to run this now.

10 Ways To Kill A Motorcylce Club:
1. Don't come to meetings.
2. If you do come, come late.
3. If the weather is bad, don't come.
4. If you attend, find fault with the work of the officers and other members.
5. Never volunteer for anything--it's easier to criticize.
6. Then get mad when you are not asked to help.
7. If asked for your opinion by an officer, tell them you have nothing to say, then after the meeting, tell everyone how things should be done.
8. Do nothing more than necessary, but when others do the work willingly, say the club is run by a clique.
9. Don't show up for club events, but expect everyone else to.
10. Don't bother about new memebers--let others worry about it.

Just a little food for thought,
Chad

Historian Ride
Here's a twist. Here's something new in the Historian department. I'm going to combine my roles as Historian and Road Captain, and lead the chapter on a Historian's ride. The idea here is that I will pick a ride that the chapter did several years ago, and we will do it again. The first one will be on June 14th, when we will ride to the Combat Air Museum in Topeka. Former Director Stan Spruill led this ride in 1995, and I think it's time we go back. The museum is a very cool place with military aircraft that goes back to World War I. Admission to the museum is $6, and we will have a tour guide to show us around. I can't promise they still do it, but the last time we were there they let us get in some of the planes, which made for a pretty cool addition to the tour. Naturally after we finish the tour, we will find a good spot to have lunch.
Unfortunately as of this writing, the Office Manager who is arranging our tour is on vacation so I do not have a time yet. Stay tuned to your email and the H.O.G. Hotline for departure time and place.
See you on the road,
Chad

ABCs of Touring Tips
More people are doing the ABCs of Touring than when I started seven years ago and I thought I would share some tips that will help you get better pictures and stay safe while you’re getting your ABC pictures for 2009. I’m not going to go through the alphabet and tell you where to get an “X” city, that’s part of the fun, but I will let you know what techniques I’ve learned to get better pictures. Part of the challenge is getting the sign that you’re trying to get, your motorcycle, and the copy of HOG magazine all in the picture and easily visible. Nothing’s worse than taking a picture and then getting home and not being able to read the sign or see where the magazine is in the picture. Here’s a list of suggestions:
1. Definitely use a digital camera and take two to four pictures of the same sign from different positions and with different settings on the camera. Then you can choose which picture is the best when you get back home.
2. Change the camera orientation from landscape to portrait to get the best composition for your picture.
3. If your camera wants to use the flash, turn the flash off. Many signs have reflective material on them and flash will make the sign hard to read, if you can read it at all.
4. Don’t pull up real close to the sign when you stop, especially for signs that are a good distance from the roadside. Staying back a ways will help you get your bike and the sign in the picture without having a lot of empty space in between them.
5. Taking the picture from a low angle (kneeling) often helps get your bike and the sign closer together in the picture. The closer the bike and sign are together, the more you will be able to crop the image in the computer to make the bike and sign fill up the picture.
6. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a good picture when the sun is behind the sign. Move around a little and see if there’s an angle that blocks the glare. Also, find out if your camera has modes or functions that will adjust for this shooting situation.
7. When it’s windy, getting the magazine to stay put is a challenge. I’ve used clips to clip the magazine to my T-bag in the past. With a Tour-Pak on my Road Glide, I’ve been using duct tape folded onto itself and clipped to the magazine to hang the magazine under the lid of the Tour-Pak. One advantage of the new HOG magazine is that it’s heavier than the HOG Tales and doesn’t flop around as easily.
Of course, safety is the number one priority when doing the ABCs of Touring. If the road you’re on has a paved shoulder, pull off as far to the right as you can. If the shoulder is grass, dirt, or gravel be careful when pulling off. It’s not worth one point for the ABCs to take a chance on getting stuck in a ditch or dropping your bike. Try not to stop on curves to take your pictures if there is a lot of traffic on the road and limited visibility around the curve. A vehicle may not be able to see you as they come around the corner. Don’t stand close to or in the road to take your pictures. If the sign for the city is not in a good place, find the Post Office, Police Station, or City Hall. You can get the form with the rules at
https://members.hog.com/website/take_part/forms/abcs_of_touring_us_can.pdf. Well, that’s all for now. If you have questions about the ABCs of Touring, e-mail me at solorider@sbcglobal.net Alright, I will tell you where to get an “X” city. Xenia, Illinois is about 94 miles east of St. Louis on US-50. Good luck with your ABCs! Be Safe!
