Trained Artist Sculpts a New Department
    For Spicer's Boat City!

Don’t be alarmed if in your travels around the Houghton Lake Area you come across a giant mosquito with an 8’ wingspan. It is just the artistic creation of Spicer’s newest employee, Mark Moyer.

After attending the Center for Creative Studies, one of the nations leading art schools, Mark Moyer dabbled with many different career ideas. “My first love is art and sculpture, says Mark, “ I’ve created large scale insects with giant wingspans, and even thought about being a art teacher.” But it was his love of his property in Fredrick and his talent in boat restoration that brought him to Spicer’s Boat City. “I have always done business here and new this was a great opportunity,” stated Mark.

Spicer’s Boat City in Houghton Lake has created, with the help of Mark, a total boat detailing and restoration center within Spicer’s. “We have wanted to do this for a while but never had a resource like Mark to get it moving in the right direction,” say Phillip Spicer, Owner of Spicer’s Boat City, “Mark brings a great deal of talent with his knowledge of gel coats, upholstery sewing and canvas repair that we never had before.”

Spicer’s new detailing department not only restores boats for their new Certified pre-owned boat inventory, but also details customers boats back to a like new finish. “We have had tremendous response to the work that mark has done so far this year,” states Bob Nicholson, Service Manager, “our customers can’t believe that the boat they are picking up was the same one they drop off.”

Spicer’s new detailing department offers complete boat detailing, including upholstery and canvas repair. This is added to a already successful service and sales department that is the only Marine Industry 5 Star Certified dealer in the area.

    Q. Jeremy,
How do I deal with water in my gas?
    Danny from Owasso

    A. Danny,
There are a few things to help this bad situation.

If it is real bad, drain your fuel tank. If not there are many fuel additives to remove water as well as a octane boost.

Peace of Mind Comes Standard at Spicer's

t's a pre-owned boat. Someone else enjoyed that boat. The thing that makes it different is what happened to if after it came to Spicer's.

Spicer's Boat City is now offering Certified Pre-Owned boats as an option to their fantastic new inventory. Every Certified Pre-Owned boat goes through a rigorous 50 point inspection in our 5-star service department. All safety items are checked as well as the motor and drive. Our detailing department then buffs, cleans, and fixes anything necessary, including the canvas and upholstery. If our technicians believe this boat is worthy of a Spicer's Certified label it is then given a strong warranty.

Spicer's offers two types of Certified Pre-Owned Boats. Gold and Silver Certified. A Gold Certified Pre-owned Boat has a full 30 day limited warranty. Silver Certified Pre-owned boats have a 50/50 co-pay 30 day warranty. Either way, you are sure to have peace of mind with a Certified Pre-owned Boat from Spicer's Boat City.

Towing the Line: Nine Tips for Towing

With the proliferation of affordable commercial assistance outfits such as Sea Tow and Tow Boat U.S. plus the constantly improving reliability of marine engines, it’s not nearly as common as it once was for recreational boaters to tow other boats. That’s a good thing. Safe towing requires the right equipment and a good bit of know-how, and it’s best left to professionals. Occasionally, though, situations still arise in which you have little choice but to accept a tow from a friend or Good Samaritan, or offer one yourself. If you ever find yourself in one of those situations, here are a few things to keep in mind.

    1. Avoid coming alongside the other boat. Except in the calmest of conditions, coming alongside another boat is a recipe for trouble. Wave action can slam the boats together, and, worse yet, crewmembers’ extremities can get caught between them. Instead, throw the tow line to the other boat from a distance.<read more>

Hey good news everyone, the crappies and bluegills are hitting great in all of the canals at Houghton Lake. Minnows for the crappies, red hooks under a slip bobber are making it happen.

The bluegills are being caught on wax worms and small crawlers, go small for hook size and a light bobber.

Walleye season opens this weekend and the weather has started to get nicer. Troll the mouths of the creeks and rivers as the walleyes should be on the feed after spawning, I like to use the clown color Rapalas # 11, add a small split shot 3' a head of lure to get it down to 6'-8'.

Browns are starting to hit in Higgins Lake 40-50' of water long lining orange Rapalas.

Are you ready to dock? Great—but before you get started, you need to learn the lingo…

Say you have a tire swing in your back yard—you know an old tire hanging on a rope. Take that rope off the swing and walk to the dock. In boating lingo, as soon as you step from the dock to the boat, that rope becomes a line. And the lines you use to tie your boat to the dock are called—you guessed it—docklines.

Nylon is the most popular material for docklines. There are a couple of reasons for this. One— it’s strong. And two—it has some give—it will stretch a bit as your boat rocks to and fro at the dock.

Next let’s talk about construction. There are two main types of nylon docklines.Three strand docklines tend to stretch or give quite a bit and are abrasion resistant.

Braided nylon docklines are stronger, come in lots of cool colors to match you boat and generally feel more substantial. You’ll probably pay more for braided lines. However, they tend to last longer then three strand lines.
Docklines come in different sizes and <read more>
