WARM
WEATHER
RIDING
TIPS
Don't
forget
that
once
the
temperature
gets
above
your
body
temperature
(~99F),
you
don't
want
to
be
wearing
a
mesh
jacket.
You
want
to
zip
up
all
of
your
vents
and
keep
as
much
of
your
skin
covered
as
possible.
Hot
air
hitting
your
skin
at
a
temperature
higher
than
your
body
temperature
will
heat
up
your
skin
and
dehydrate
you
faster
than
you'll
know
it's
happening.
Cover
your
neck
with
a
soaking
wet
bandana,
wet
down
your
T-shirt,
and
stop
often
to
re-soak
both.
Drink
way
more
water
than
you
think
you'll
need.

"Biker
Gods" |
When
I
first
got
started
in
this
motorcycling
hobby,
I
studied
several
books
on
riding
techniques
and
safety.
If
there’s
one
thing
that
I
learned
in
college
it
was
that
the
more
information
you
have,
the
more
you
can
be
prepared
to
make
better
decisions.
I
learned
from
these
books
that
if
you
don’t
have
any
motorcycle
training,
don’t
have
a
motorcycle
license,
don’t
wear
a
helmet,
or
drink
alcohol
before
riding,
you
have
a
greater
chance
to
become
a
motorcycle
fatality
statistic.
That’s
the
scientific
approach
to
things.
But
what
if
you’re
a
more
superstitious,
Paganistic
type
person?
That’s
where
the
Biker
Gods
come
in.
The
Biker
Gods
decide
whether
you
ride
in
sun,
wind,
rain,
or
snow.
They
decide
whether
you
ride
on
smooth,
well-maintained
roads,
miles
of
deep
gravel,
or
if
you
hit
never-ending
construction
zones.
They
decide
whether
your
motorcycle
runs
faultlessly
or
has
little
gremlins
or
has
a
major
breakdown.
And,
of
course,
the
Biker
Gods
decide
who
crashes
and
who
makes
it
home
in
one
piece.
The
whole
subject
of
the
Biker
Gods
came
out
during
my
trip
to
the
Louisiana
State
HOG
Rally
this
year.
The
Louisiana
Rally
is
usually
the
first
rally
of
the
year
and
I
haven’t
ever
gone
because
that
time
of
year
is
usually
marginal
as
far
as
good
riding
weather
goes.
I
left
on
Friday
morning
after
work
and
rode
to
Fort
Smith,
Arkansas.
The
weather
forecasts
predicted
rain
on
Saturday.
It
started
sprinkling
as
I
loaded
my
bike
to
leave
the
hotel.
I
donned
my
raingear
and
proceeded
on.
It
only
rained
for
a
short
time
and
it
never
rained
hard.
After
that
the
sun
came
out
and
it
turned
into
a
beautiful
day.
When
I
got
to
the
rally
I
said
hello
to
Valerie
Ledterman,
HOG
Regional
Manager
for
Region
6.
I
have
become
acquainted
with
Valerie
since
I
usually
attend
the
Texas,
Oklahoma,
and
Arkansas
rallies
each
year
and
those
are
all
in
her
region.
She
asked
me
how
the
ride
was
to
the
rally
and
I
told
that
I
had
only
hit
a
little
rain
near
Fort
Smith.
She
said
the
Biker
Gods
must
be
smiling
on
me.
I
didn’t
have
the
heart
to
tell
her
that
I
had
run
out
of
gas
on
the
way
to
the
rally,
but
her
comment
about
the
Biker
Gods
stuck
in
my
head.
I
headed
home
on
Sunday
morning.
It
was
another
beautiful
sunny
day.
The
Biker
Gods
were
definitely
in
a
good
mood.
When
I
got
to
Nevada,
Missouri,
I
decided
to
stop
for
one
last
gas
and
food
stop.
I
didn’t
want
to
have
to
eat
when
I
got
home
since
I
wanted
to
take
a
nap
before
I
had
to
go
to
work
that
night.
I
gassed
up
and
went
into
the
store.
I
found
a
small
pizza
and
a
drink
for
my
dinner
and
got
in
line
to
pay.
As
I
was
waiting
somebody
fired
up
a
dirt
bike
behind
the
store.
It
sounded
like
they
were
having
trouble
and
the
bike
didn’t
want
to
run
very
well.
I
paid
and
went
out
in
front
of
the
store
to
eat.
I
kept
hearing
the
dirt
bike
and
finally
I
heard
the
bike
coming
around
the
side
of
the
store.
Immediately
I
noticed
that
the
rider
had
only
shorts
and
tennis
shoes
on.
He
zoomed
across
the
parking
lot
and
went
behind
the
restaurant
across
the
street.
He
popped
a
little
wheelie
on
his
way.
I
had
a
premonition
that
this
was
not
going
to
end
well.
He
flew
around
the
back
of
the
restaurant
and
came
back
towards
the
gas
station
area.
He
popped
another
wheelie,
but
this
time
lifted
the
front
wheel
higher
off
the
ground.
As
he
gave
the
bike
a
little
more
gas,
it
got
away
from
him
and
he
slid
off
the
back
of
the
seat.
He
tried
to
stay
on
his
feet
but
was
going
too
fast.
He
fell
and
bounced
a
couple
of
times
before
landing
in
a
motionless
pile
on
the
concrete.
His
friends
and
family
rushed
to
where
he
was
and
started
yelling
“Call
911.”
I
continued
to
eat
my
pizza.
A
trucker
walked
by
and
said
he
was
trying
to
get
a
nap
before
the
guy
started
up
the
dirt
bike
and
the
noise
had
disturbed
him.
He
told
me,
“That’s
what
happens
when
you
don’t
respect
your
equipment.”
I
agreed
and
thought,
“The
Biker
Gods
are
not
pleased.”
The
ambulance
and
police
showed
up
in
a
few
minutes.
I
finished
my
dinner
and
started
gearing
up
for
the
last
push
home.
I
rolled
slowly
out
of
the
gas
station
parking
lot
and
hoped
that
the
guy
would
be
OK.
I
also
couldn’t
help
but
think
that
he
had
brought
it
on
himself.
The
Biker
Gods
don’t
have
much
patience
with
stupid
people.
I
often
wonder
what
makes
a
rider
safe
or
unsafe.
A
rider
that
regularly
has
bad
things
happen
to
him
needs
to
think
about
whether
he
can
do
something
to
prevent
it.
We’ve
all
dropped
our
bikes
because
we
forgot
to
put
the
sidestand
down,
dropped
our
bike
in
unforeseen
sand,
or
run
off
the
road
when
a
curve
snuck
up
on
us.
If
you
haven’t
had
these
experiences,
you
haven’t
ridden
enough.
It
only
takes
a
second
for
bad
things
to
happen.
If
you
don’t
believe
in
the
scientific
approach,
maybe
you
should
start
saying
a
little
prayer
to
the
Biker
Gods
every
time
you
get
on
your
motorcycle.
Good
Luck!

ANNUAL
RIDE
TO
CAMP
QUALITY |
Sunday,
August
2,
is
our
annual
ride
to
Camp
Quality
in
Excelsior
Springs.
For
those
that
have
never
been
to,
or
even
heard
of
Camp
Quality,
this
is
a
weeklong
summer
camp
for
kids
with
cancer.
This
is
one
time
a
year
when
these
brave
young
people
can
get
away
from
their
illnesses
and
just
be
kids.
We
(the
GKC
HOG
Chapter)
have
been
going
there
every
summer
since
1997
and
a
few
of
the
kids
we
met
that
first
year
are
still
coming
there.
We
interact
with
them
by
taking
them
doo-rags
and
showing
off
our
Harleys
by
letting
them
sit
on
them
and
taking
their
pictures.
Sometimes
it
is
hard
to
tell
who
is
enjoying
this
ride
more,
our
fellow
riders
or
the
kids.
Even
the
camp
chaperones
get
into
the
"Harley
thing"
and
want
their
pictures
taken
on
our
bikes.
I
know
it
is
hard
for
any
of
us
to
see
children
suffering,
but
this
is
altogether
different.
These
kids
are
running
around,
laughing,
and
just
having
fun
like
any
other
normal
kids.
This
ride
will
leave
Children’s'
Fountain
in
North
Kansas
City
at
12:30
pm.
We
will
take
the
long
way
to
Excelsior
Springs
for
a
2:00
pm
arrival
time
at
Camp
Doniphan
(Camp
Quality).
After
an
hour
or
so,
we
will
head
for
food.
You
can
bring
a
doo-rag
if
you
would
like,
but
we
will
have
one
for
every
child.
The
most
important
thing
to
bring
is
yourself
(oh,
and
your
Harley).
See
you
there!

Missouri
State
HOG
Rally |
“Where
Past
Meets
Present”
is
the
theme
of
this
year’s
Missouri
State
HOG
Rally.
The
rally
starts
on
Thursday
evening,
September
10,
with
a
pre-party
and
goes
through
Saturday,
September
12.
The
location
is
St.
Charles,
MO,
with
lots
of
great
riding
and
history.
Pre-registration
is
open
and
you
can
register
online.
Registration
is
all
ala
carte
this
year
so
you
must
order
shirts,
pins,
and
patches,
separate
from
the
registration
fee.
Pre
registration
deadline
is
July
23,
2009.
While
you’re
there
registering,
be
sure
to
volunteer.
The
rally
can’t
take
place
without
the
help
of
volunteers.
The
website
also
has
information
about
the
events,
rides,
and
lodging.
The
host
hotel
for
this
event
is
the
Embassy
Suites;
however,
we
have
made
a
reservation
at
the
Days
Inn,
2781
Veteran’s
Memorial
Parkway,
St.
Charles,
MO,
636
949
8700.
This
hotel
is
about
1.3
miles
from
the
Embassy.
A
block
of
rooms
has
not
been
setup
so
if
you
want
a
room
there,
reservations
need
to
be
made
ASAP
as
there’s
a
limited
number
of
rooms
left.
The
normal
rate
is
$59.99
plus
tax,
but
if
you
call
the
hotel
directly
and
mention
our
name
(Simpson),
they
will
give
you
a
rate
of
$52.99
plus
tax.
More
information
regarding
a
potential
ride
will
be
available
at
a
later
date.
If
you
do
plan
to
attend
the
rally,
please
pre-register.
Pre-registration
ensures
that
you
get
a
t-shirt,
patch,
or
pin
if
you
want
one.
The
rally
budget
is
also
based
on
pre-registrations
so
the
more
pre-registrations,
the
better
the
party
they
can
prepare
for
us.
Join
us
in
St.
Charles
for
the
MO
State
HOG
Rally
in
September!!

H.O.G.
History |
Well
July
is
here,
and
in
the
history
department
that
got
me
thinking
back
to
our
old
Safety
Officer
Dave
Neal.
You
see
Dave
had
a
tradition
that
for
his
safety
talk
at
the
July
meeting
he
would
always
go
over
the
motorcycle
laws
for
the
state
of
South
Dakota.
Back
then
a
lot
more
people
from
the
chapter
were
going
to
Sturgis
every
year,
and
the
rally
always
comes
right
on
the
heels
of
our
July
meeting.
Anyway,
the
things
he
would
point
out
were:
1.
If
you
are
under
the
age
of
18
you
must
wear
a
helmet.
2.
Eye
protection
is
required
at
all
times.
3.
Eye
protection
can
have
absolutely
no
tint
from
dusk
on.
4.
To
be
counted
as
a
legal
stop,
both
of
the
rider's
feet
must
touch
the
ground.
5.
If
you
get
a
ticket,
you
must
pay
the
officer
on
the
spot.
I
bring
this
up
for
two
reasons.
One,
this
tradition
was
an
interesting
little
piece
of
our
history
that
most
members
don't
know
about,
and
two,
it's
a
great
reminder
that
whenever
you
travel
on
your
bike
you
should
check
out
the
local
laws
for
motorcycling
wherever
you
are
going.
I
hear
a
lot
of
people
who
say
things
like,
"well,
I
always
wear
my
helmet
no
matter
what,
so
I
really
don't
need
to
know
what
the
laws
are
in
(insert
name
of
destination)."
While
the
helmet
law
is
one
thing
you
need
to
know,
you
also
need
to
know
all
of
the
other
laws.
For
instance,
a
lot
of
riders
have
mastered
the
"pause
and
go"
where
they
come
to
a
complete
stop
without
ever
taking
their
feet
off
of
the
foot
pegs,
and
then
take
off
again.
That's
a
good
skill
to
have,
but
can
get
you
a
ticket
in
South
Dakota
for
running
a
stop
sign.
It’s
just
a
little
something
to
think
about
along
with
this
month’s
history
lesson.
