LOCAL
TIME
VESPA
TOUR
STOPS
AT
IHOS. |
Around
the
end
of
June
I
read
a
story
about
a
photographer
from
New
York
that
was
getting
ready
to
set
off
on
a
cross
country
journey
to
Vancouver
B.C.
on
a
Vespa
Super
300,
the
fastest
Vespa
that
Piaggio
has
ever
produced.
What
caught
my
attention
about
this
man,
Clay
Enos,
was
not
necessarily
that
he
was
making
a
huge
journey
on
a
Vespa
scooter.
Since
Piaggio
rolled
their
first
scooter
off
the
line
in
1947
thousands
of
people
have
ridden
hundreds
of
thousands
of
miles
at
a
time
on
these
amazing
machines.
What
made
this
guy
stand
out
to
me
was
his
motivation
for
the
trip.
He
simply
wanted
to
savor
the
beauty
of
this
country
and
the
people
living
in
it
at
an
easy
pace
on
a
reliable
machine;
enter
the
Vespa.
I
sent
Clay
an
e-mail
as
soon
as
I
heard
about
his
trip
and
offered
to
provide
any
support
he
needed
on
his
journey.
I
didn't
hear
back
from
him
until
the
first
week
of
August
when
I
got
a
call
from
the
Piaggio
corporate
office
informing
us
that
Clay
would
be
in
Boise
that
day
and
he
needed
a
headlight
bulb.
Apparently
traversing
5,000+
miles
of
pot-holed
country
roads
had
taken
a
toll
on
the
bulbs
filament.
We
were
stoked
to
help
and
no
sooner
did
I
say
send
him
over
did
he
roll
into
our
parking
lot
grinning
ear
to
ear,
Clay
Enos
was
here.
I
had
no
idea
what
kind
of
person
Clay
would
be
but
I
was
happy
to
meet
a
genuinely
good
human
being
with
a
deep
respect
for
his
scooter
and
the
people
that
had
helped
him
along
the
way.
There
was
no
ego
with
Clay,
only
excitement
and
eagerness
to
spread
the
word
about
the
merits
of
owning
a
Vespa.
In
a
months
time
Clay
had
become
one
of
Piaggio's
greatest
advocates
and
made
sure
to
tell
me
to
pass
his
number
along
to
anyone
who
was
unsure
of
doing
their
daily
commute
on
a
scooter.
This
was
not
an
empty
offer
and
he
made
an
authentic
effort
to
make
sure
that
I
felt
comfortable
taking
him
up
on
it.
I
feel
lucky
that
I
got
to
be
a
tiny
part
of
Clay's
huge
trip,
but
more
so
at
the
chance
my
girlfriend
Georgia
and
I
had
to
have
dinner
with
him
and
learn
about
what
he'd
seen
and
where
he
was
going
next.
Clay
got
his
motorcycle
endorsement
two
days
before
he
left
the
East
Coast
for
the
great
Pacific
Northwest.
In
fact,
the
time
period
from
when
he
formed
the
idea
to
make
this
trip
untill
he
hit
the
road
was
about
three
weeks.
He
struck
me
as
a
deeply
intelligent
guy
that
didn't
complicate
life
by
over
thinking
things
to
death.
His
passion
for
life
and
philosophies
on
living
simply
were
infectious.
I
spoke
to
Clay
two
days
after
he
left
Boise
for
Bend,
Oregon.
He
called
to
say
thanks
for
the
help
and
when
I
appologized
for
not
calling
to
check
up
on
him
he
told
me
he
was
"an
easy
friend",
that
no
matter
where
life
would
take
us
that
the
connection
we
made
through
these
scooters
was
permanent.
I
believe
he's
right.
