Is your tractor’s antifreeze ready for winter?
To check the freeze point of the coolant in your tractor’s radiator, there are several simple testers available. If you have an old antifreeze tester in the garage or tool box that uses little floating balls, Jim Walton, John Deere product manager for coolants, has a suggestion - throw it in the waste basket. “Over time those balls can absorb moisture severely degrading accuracy. Dial- or bulb-type testers are more accurate,” notes Walton, “and just a little more expensive.”
Test strips

If you have a larger tractor (especially with wet cylinder liners) Walton recommends test strips that resemble litmus paper. These strips tell you the freeze point of your coolant as well as the condition of special additives that are important to larger, hard-working engines.
