October 2009 Newsletter

The Director's Minute
Greetings Friends,
If you haven’t heard, the Missouri State H.O.G. Rally in St Charles was a blast. All those I talked to had a great time. The only downside was the fire alarm at 1215am on Sunday morning.
Welcome to all the new members, if you have any questions about our chapter and what we do and when we do it, just contact any of the officers and we will be more than glad to help. As I told Ron Gentry, maybe there is some bad karma associated with Truman LakeVisitor Center, we have tried to make that ride for two months now and can’t seem to get there.
As we wind down the year and we have new members all the time, I would like to talk about what is a H.O.G. Chapter. A H.O.G. Chapter is a family oriented, nonpolitical organization consisting of people who mutually enjoy riding their Harley-Davidson motorcycles, getting together and sharing stories, talking about our bikes, the modifications we have made or plan to make. A H.O.G. Chapter is an organization that is dedicated to riding and having fun. What does that mean to me? Well, it means we get the most out our bikes by riding them, whether that is by ourselves or with a group. An old saying is “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey”. Our chapter plans and sponsors many different riding events throughout the year. From poker runs to destination rides, dinner rides, lunch rides, rides just to ride and even multiple day touring rides. A H.O.G. Chapter is not a charitable organization. We support other charities, inform the membership of rides and events that are in support of charities and generally participate in those rides and events. Lastly a H.O.G. Chapter exists solely because of our sponsor. The decision to sponsor a chapter is undertaken solely at the dealerships discretion. Without them, there is no chapter. We are blessed to have fantastic sponsors in Jack & Debi Fleming and Melissa Jemes. We could not ask for better folks. All of that sounds pretty simple eh?
Well, really it is, however, there has to be leaders within the chapter to plan and assist in the execution of our rides and events. That brings me to our annual officer nominations and elections. As many of you know, officers can be selected by the sponsor or elected by the membership. Our sponsors have chosen to have the officers elected by the membership. None of the positions are hard and you will get out of it what you put into it. We need volunteers to steer the chapter and provide the service of Riding & Having Fun and to provide purpose, direction & motivation. Previous officers, our sponsor and H.O.G. will provide the training and guidance so it is almost impossible to fail.
A couple of events and rides I want to remind you of. By the time you get this, the ride to Stockton and Pomme De Terre State Parks will be over. Our fall poker run is on Oct 3; the Swap meet in on 10 Oct, Changing of the Leaves Ride on the 17th, the Road Kill Picnic on the 18th and the Ladies of Harley (LOH) 2nd Annual Chili Cook-Off is on Nov 7th. Check the calendar in the newsletter and the website www.ozarkharley-davidson.com.
The 2010 Officer nominations will continue at our October Gathering. If you or someone you know is interested in this fun filled and rewarding experience, nominate them or have someone nominate you. You must be present to accept a nomination. I can promise you will not regret it. Elections will be in November.
Our next gathering is October 18th at the pavilion behind Ozark Harley-Davidson at 11am. We will have our Annual Road Kill Picnic and take the Chapter Photo.

May The Force Be With You,
Yoda

From Your Assistant Director
Well the Missouri State Rally is done with but we could not see and do everything! If you were there you know how great it was—if not, then plan to go to Columbia for next years’ Rally. I think that the Rally committee deserves our thanks for making this rally as great as it was—Great Job!!
Coming up is our Fall Poker Run (Oct 3), Changing of the Leaves Ride (Oct 17) and the Road Kill Picnic (Oct 18). The Chapter Photo will be taken at the picnic so be sure to wear your chapter shirt.
Nominations for next years’ officers have begun. If you would like to nominate someone or be an officer yourself, be at the Road Kill Picnic on Oct 18th. Current officers can inform you of what is required of any position so just ask if you are interested. Being an officer can be fun, challenging and rewarding!!
Ladies, if you are an active or associate member of H.O.G. you can join Ladies of Harley (LOH). It is free and you get a special embroidered patch and pin the first year you join. Each year after that, you will get a pin indicating the year of membership. You must contact H.O.G. via phone or online to join. Guys, you can join and participate in LOH as well.
If you renew your National H.O.G. membership every year, consider renewing for 2 or 3 years at a time—this can save you some money. You can become a life member and the dues that you previously paid will be deducted from the life member cost. This also avoids the hassle of renewing your membership every year—think about it.
We will be looking for you at the Chapter events and out on the road—Ride Safe!!

Bill DeCastro, Assistant Director

A Note From The Editor
Don’t forget that our next meeting is the annual Road Kill Picnic & we will be taking the Chapter Photo. I have a sign up sheet for side dishes and desserts so shoot me an email and let me know if you would like to bring something. Also, we will be cooking hamburgers and hotdogs at the Swap Meet on October 10th to raise money for the chapter. If you have a little extra time and would like to come and help us, that would be great. See everyone there!!
