Winterizing Your Ride

Cold Storage Preparations Can Protect Your Motorcycle

Here are some tips to keep your beloved Harley in great shape during its long winter nap:

•  Take the bike for a final ride.

•  Fill up the gas tank afterward to prevent moisture buildup inside your tank.

•  Add fuel stabilizer according to the instructions and let the engine run for a few minutes. A Fuel stabilizer will help prevent fuel from breaking down and causing gummed-up or varnished fuel lines, carburetors, injectors, etc.

•  Change the engine oil and oil filter, transmission fluid, and chain case fluid while the bike is still warm. This helps eliminate corrosive chemicals and particles in the old oil that can eventually begin to attack metal surfaces.

•  Lube your clutch and throttle cables.

•  Check and service the battery, clean the battery terminals, and connect a trickle-charger (or battery tender, as some smaller units are called).

•  Inflate your tires to the proper pressure, because under inflated tires can hasten the appearance of flat spots. Unless you can store your motorcycle with all the weight off its tires, you should move your bike regularly and adjust its tires to a different spot each time. Don't put your tires in direct sunlight, because rubber is sensitive to ultraviolet light and can develop dry rot.

•  Clean and wax the bike to prevent corrosion and pitting caused by moisture trapped in dirt and grime.

•  If possible, keep the bike in a warm garage, out of direct sunlight.  UV rays also deteriorate paint and plastic.

•  Use a breathable cover to keep dust and moisture out. Plastic tarps that don't breathe can trap moisture in, causing rust.

•  Store it out of the way in a low-traffic area, making sure that the bike is locked up, and keep the registration and other papers in a safe place.

These simple precautions will ensure that your beloved motorcycle will be ready to ride in the spring. A great alternative is to visit our dealership where we can winterize your motorcycle for you and store it in a climate-controlled and secure environment. We can also help you with performance upgrades or installation of those new accessories of your dreams. Stop in and see us today to get the details on our winter storage program.
