Happy Holidays from the Martin Motor Sports Team!

There are lots of tools available when it comes to safety in the back country. While no one tool will guarantee your safety, innovations in technology are providing snowmobile and back country users with more options. The basic staples of any back country safety kit include a beacon, probe, and shovel. There are also many new innovations and advancing technologies available to supplement but never replace these basics. Technical information follows on the latest and most sophisticated beacon on the market, as well as the industries leader in avalanche air bags and personal GPS tracking.

Ortovox S1 Beacon
The Ortovox S1 is the world’s first sensor-controlled avalanche scanner which enables rescues to be performed in the shortest possible time. The entire avalanche area can be quickly assessed at a glance on the large display and, in the case of multiple victims, the revolutionary sensor control can show the location of up to four people simultaneously in a clearly visible manner.

The guidance on the refined search takes you straight to the nearest victim, while the display is updated in real time thanks to continuous signal processing. Once the first victim has been located, this signal can be deleted so that the search for additional burial victims can be continued immediately.

The S1 features an illuminated display, an electronic compass, a temperature display and even a slope-measuring device for determining the slope gradient.

Features Include:
Comfortable body belt system which switches on the beacon once clipped in. Locates up to 5 buried persons within a radius of 60 m. Automatic safety switch-back to transmit mode from any operating mode. Illuminated display shows positions of all victims and distances to them. Displays an indication of depth of burial.

ABS Avalanche Air Bag
The ABS Avalanche Airbag can protect you from being buried in an avalanche or reduce the depth of burial drastically. The majority of victims in an avalanche are still alive when the avalanche stops; however, most of them are buried. The location and digging out of the victim often takes longer time than the person buried has to survive. Therefore the central task of avalanche safety equipment is to prevent burial. With ABS Avalanche Airbag you have 170 litres of additional volume within seconds that can prevent you from sinking into the flowing masses of snow or can reduce the depth of burial. This has been shown to increase the chances of survival.

SPOT 2 Satellite GPS Messenger
Allows GPS location reporting and tracking via Google Maps from anywhere in the world. Lets you set up a secure-access or public web page via the Find Me Spot and Spot Adventures web sites to update Web users on your whereabouts and exploits. Displays up to 7 days of saved location data on your web page, making it easy to track your progress. Stores up to 30 days of progress data and supports up to 10 shared pages.

Check In button: Lets you inform up to 10 of your contacts of your condition via phone and e-mail for easy correspondence on the go.
Track Progress button: Lets you send your location to your tracking web page every 10 minutes for up to 24 hours. Sends previous 2 track points with the current track point for easily retracing your steps. Custom Message button: Lets you create a personalized message to send to your contacts. S.O.S button: Sends an emergency assistance request to GEOS emergency response center every 5 minutes for your safety while you travel.

Hi my name is Morgan McGrath and I am a BRP Sales Rep at the West Edmonton store. Although it may not look like it outside yet, Snowmobile season is certainly in full swing around here. Our sales and service departments have been busy prepping customers sleds for the fast approaching riding season. With the ASA show and our annual Trail Seekers Swap Meet over and done with, snowmobilers everywhere are ready to start riding. For some of us, riding season has already begun. With record snowfall in the Eastern Rockies, snowmobilers have been riding right from the parking lots in most areas for weeks, whereas in the past, November is typically a month when only the brave tend to ride. Typically in years before the rocks, stumps, and open water have kept most people from riding till closer to Christmas. Although landmines are less of a concern, avalanches have been much more frequent this past month than in other years at this time.

The recent avalanche course conducted by Lori Zacaruk of Zac’s Tracs and a Canadian Avalanche forecaster taught us that there is already an avalanche concern in the backcountry. There is a weak layer of snow that formed on Halloween that has been a persistent problem. We were also reminded that avalanches can happen when storms bring in new snow before the previous layer has had time to bond and heal.

My first ride of the year was the 29th-30th of November. The first day the guys and I rode Allan Creek, an area near Valemount, BC. The snow was really good, with maybe a day or two of tracks and a good solid base under the 18 inches of fresh snow. This made for lots of epic pow turns with good traction at the same time. The second day we woke up to a foot of new snow in town and a lot more in the higher elevation ranges. We decided to break into Keyhole, which is an ungroomed area near Clemina. We were the first ones there and were riding in 1 foot of fresh snow on the trail and 2-3 feet of fresh snow up top. My 163’’ track definitely came in handy that day, breaking trail through the trees. By the time we busted our way in we were quite tired but it was all worth it to have the area entirely to ourselves. We had a day filled of endless face shots and sunny skies- I can’t wait to go back.

If you haven't had a chance to check out our new west Edmonton facility, drop in and see me. I will show you around and what's new for 2010 Ski-Doo.

MasterCraft has a new form of eye candy, the MasterCraft BIG (Boat Instrument Gauge).
This beautiful, crystal clear and easily navigable 6” display is more computer than gauge. It allows you to see all the typical information you are accustomed to like fuel, temperature, speed and cruise settings. But this year the MasterCraft BIG takes it a step further, enabling the boat operator to set up rider preferences for ballast and surf tabs, watch video footage from the tower camera after a session or to pipe in a DVD from the optional Clarion CMV1 for those times when you are anchored off and still want to be entertained. Bottom line, the MasterCraft BIG will make a huge difference in how you drive, ride and relax.
