Feature Article - Invasive Species Surcharge
The state of Oregon has implemented a $5 Invasive Species Surcharge for every boat registered after November 1st, 2009. This surcharge is designed to help prevent and ecological and financial crisis. The goal is to prevent invasive species from entering or spreading throughout our state, clogging waterways, damaging ecosystems and economies and restricting recreational boating. The program will be funded by the $5 biennial surcharge on a motorized boat or sailboat registration, a $5 annual fee on manually powered boats 10 feet or longer, and a $20 annual fee for non-residential motor boats.

This surcharge has been implemented due to the large number of invasive species that have been introduced to our waters when boats are transferred from one waterway to another without proper cleaning. This invasive species have had negative effects on ecosystems and fish populations, to name just a few. These invasions also have extremely negative effects on our economy. One such incident with a Tui Chub marine plant required a complex $6 million restoration effort in 2006.

Here are a couple of ways that you can prevent the spread of invasive species;

1. Clean your boat, motor and trailer of all aquatic plants and animals after each use.

2. Drain all interior compartments, including the bilge, livewell and storage areas.

3. Dry thoroughly for five or more days with all hatches open.

These simple tips will help keep our waterways healthy, and may save our communities millions in restoration efforts.

December Service Department News
Our service department is back from vacation and running full speed. Take advantage of short winter lines and get your boat winterized today! Extremely cold weather has been bad news for boat owners all over Oregon, especially those who have inboard engines. Without winterization, these extreme temperatures can lead to cracked engine blocks, as well as other terrible engine issues. If your boat still needs winterization, or you have any other service needs, call and schedule your appointment today, 541-888-5501.

December Y Family Entry
This month’s Y Family entry comes from Larry and Helen, and it is in regards to their purchase of a new outboard engine from Y Marina. We would like to thank Larry and Helen for sending us their testimonial, as this week it features our Sales and Rigging team!

Attention Bruce and Support Group,

What a pleasure doing business with you. We were never under any pressure from Bruce who always had a smile and greeted us by name. We feel he went out of his way to see we had the proper motor for our purposes. The installation crew did quality workmanship. Just an all around pleasant experience.

Thanks to All,

Larry and Helen

We really appreciate gathering feedback about our Y Family Member’s experience with us. Thanks again to Larry and Helen for sharing this quick email message about their experience with our team. December Recipe of the Month

Dungeness Crab Cakes

Crabbing season has just begun in Northwest Coastal waters and the catch seems to be promising. What better to warm you up after a cold crabbing trip, than some homemade crab cakes. Since I personally enjoyed last month’s recipe so much, I went back to www.romantic-oregon-coast.com for this months Y Family Recipe of the Month.

Ingredients:

• 1 pound Dungeness crabmeat • 1 egg, beaten • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard • 1/2 cup mayonnaise • 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 cup diced onion • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 3/4 teaspoon crab seasoning • 1 cup fresh grated bread crumbs

Preparation:

Put the one pound of crabmeat in mixing bowl. Add the beaten egg and mix lightly. Add all remaining ingredients in the order listed above. Next, you will form the crab cake mixture into the desired size. Fry the crab cakes in skillet with vegetable oil on medium to high heat with about 1/2-inch of oil in bottom of skillet. Fry on one side until golden brown and turn over on other side to get the same golden brown color on both sides. Let stand off of heat for approximately 1 minute and serve. This recipe yields 6 servings.

Please contact us if you have the opportunity to try these delicious crab cakes. We are interested to hear if our Y Family Members enjoyed the recipe, or if it should be cast to Davey Jones's Locker! Also, please do not forget to share "your" favorite sea food recipe. You recipe may be featured in our January Y Family Newsletter. If your recipe is selected, you can receive cool prizes, courtesy of Y Marina.
