Feature Article - 2010 and Beyond!
The internet has truly changed the way that the world works. This has become especially true in the boating industry over the past several years. We have become more independent both as customers and as business people, using the World Wide Web to answer questions, instead of picking up the phone, or going to visit a local vendor. As consumers we are now able to visit a showroom halfway across the globe with the click of a button, giving you the ability to compare and contrast models as well as the ability to research every last detail of a specific model before making an ever important purchase decision. Consumers can even get up to the minute updates from your favorite place of business using social networking tools like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace and AIM.

At Y Marina we have made a commitment to keep up with the technological world around us. We have now joined the wonderful world of social networking, creating a page both Facebook and Twitter. You can visit our home page today, www.ymarinaboats.com, for a direct link to our Twitter and Facebook pages. We are now able to share photos and up to the minute updates on upcoming sales and important events, as well as any other important information that we feel our Y Family Members deserve to know.

Beginning the first week in January you will also have the ability to chat with a Y Marina employee via a brand new chat program built right into our website. If you have a question about a specific piece of inventory or service that Y Marina offers, we will be able to answer your questions in real time, without ever having to pick up the phone. Just one more means of communication for our Y Family Members convenience.

Finally, we will be creating personalized videos of special inventory in stock at Y Marina. A guided video tour by one of our fine sales associates will be provided for you from the comfort of your home or office. Keep your eye out for these videos, and much more to come in 2010. And as always, feel free to contact us any time with any suggestions, as we are always looking to improve our offering to our Y Family Members.

January Service Department News
Take advantage of short winter service department lines and get your boat in for service today. As many of you know, the upcoming spring and summer months tend to create congestion in nearly every service department around the state. If your boat is in need of a tune up, or the addition of accessories or electronics, there is no better time than now.

Right now our service department is concentrating most of their efforts on winterization. Extreme cold temperatures have been sweeping across the nation, and the Northwest has been one of its targets. If you have an inboard or I/O that has not been winterized this year, call Dick Hyatt and schedule your appointment, 541-888-5501. Don’t be a victim of the cold this winter. Preserve your engines health with a winterization today. You can now schedule your service online at www.ymarinaboats.com.

John Griffith's Fishing Tip for January - Winter Steelhead
Steelhead are the primary target of sport fishing effort here in winter. One of our more equal-opportunity fisheries, bank fishermen can catch hold of the action as much or more than boat anglers can on smaller streams. Bank fishing was the only way to do it prior to the invention of the McKenzie style drift boat in the early-middle decades of the last century. And there has always been fly fishing for summer-run steelhead, locally on the Rogue and North Umpqua, and more people are trying flies for winter steelhead.

The traditional approach in bank fishing is to cast a lure or bait, or both together, at the upper end of a reach of water, let the current remove the slack, and experience the often-confounding tap-tap felt through the rod as the weight drifts along hitting the higher boulders on the river bottom. A strange-feeling "tap" or a stop or a yank signals that a steelhead has picked the offering up in its mouth.

Boaters use plugs, like Hot Shots, or bait to sweep a likely piece of water. An old technique has become very popular recently called side-drifting. In this, the passengers toss bait or feathered jigs into the water at the head of a "slot" and the boatman steers the boat to keep their lures in the best part of the water as the boat is carried downstream.

We used to do this when transiting from a good spot to the next one downstream, but now it has become a major technique. Some fishermen and lots of guides have put small outboards on their drift boats so they can motor back up to the head of steelhead-holding water and go through again and again. Therein lies the problem.

On a big river it doesn't matter because there's lots of room for everyone. That's not the case on small streams like the South Fork Coquille. Last year the State Marine Board heard and rejected a request to ban outboard motors on the South Coquille. It was the second time this decade that the board heard and rejected the request. The general feeling among the majority of board members was that the ban would be a step toward micro-management, and that good manners can't be legislated, at least for now.

So how does the outdoor public go forward with this history of user-group disagreement? I suggest they do as the Marine Board said, practice good manners or a rule might have to be adopted in the future. If bank anglers are on a hole, don't motor back up through it. If other boats are coming to fish the hole, make only a couple of passes and move on downstream before they arrive.

Fishing Buzz
Crabbing- Crab fishermen continue to have success in our coastal waters. We have spoken with several fishermen who have reached their limit in a very short amount of time. Even those crabbing inside the bar have had great success. The crab has been very full and as delicious as ever!

Winter Steelhead- Keep your eye out for updates on our winter steelhead run in our upcoming February Y Family Newsletter.

For any additional fishing tips feel free to contact Dean Hendricks of North Country Lures and Flies LLC. Dean had been a professional guide for over 27 years, with roots all over Northern California. He is still very much involved with the ODFW and many of the local fisheries programs. Mr. Hendricks is in constant contact with a network of professional fishing guides and is happy to provide any knowledge that he comes across. You can email Dean Hendricks at northcountryluresandflies@yahoo.com.

Recipe of the Month
A Fish Named Rosemary

Inspired by John Griffith’s fishing tip for January, we at Y Marina thought a recipe for steelhead would be fitting. Steelhead is an absolute treat to catch as well as to eat. This month’s featured recipe comes from www.fly-fishing-discounters.com and is titled “A Fish Named Rosemary.”

Ingredients:

• A 1 pound steelhead filet, skin optional • 1 clove fresh garlic, finely chopped • 1 and 1/2 tbsp rosemary chopped coarse • The zest of a single lemon • The juice of a half of a lemon • 1/4 tsp Iodized table salt • 1/2 tsp ground black peppercorns • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil • Additional olive oil for pan greasing

Preparation:

Line a baking pan with tin foil and the coat it with the additional olive oil. Pre-heat your broiler on the highest setting. Combine all of the ingredients except for the 1 pound fillet of steelhead. Blend the ingredients until it forms a paste. If you keep the skin on, put the fish in the pan skin-side down and evenly spread seasoning mix over the fish meat. Broil the fish for about 5 minutes or less at position 2 in the broiler (2 racks away from the heat). The fish should be JUST seared and the seasoning CANNOT even appear to be burned. Lower the fish to the 3rd or 4th broiler position and lower the heat to 325⁰F. Continue to cook for about 10 minutes until the thickest part of the fish is cooked. Serve and enjoy!

This steelhead recipe is delicious when complimented with steamed vegetables, rice, or your favorite potato. A glass of wine or a nice cold beer is a necessity!

Please contact us if you have the opportunity to try this awesome steelhead recipe. We are interested to hear if our Y Family Members enjoyed the recipe, or if it should be cast to Davey Jones's Locker! Also, please do not forget to share "your" favorite sea food recipe. You recipe may be featured in our January Y Family Newsletter. If your recipe is selected, you can receive cool prizes, courtesy of Y Marina.
