January
2010
In
spite
of
the
toughest
winter
weather
in
many
years,
there
is
good
reason
to
be
optimistic
about
our
brands
in
the
year
2010
and
beyond.
First
of
all,
let’s
be
glad
our
brands
are
still
here;
witness
the
demise
of
Buell.
In
spite
of
tough
economic
times,
both
BMW
and
Triumph
have
shown
some
ability
not
just
to
weather
the
storm,
but
prosper
and
create
new
product.
As
exhibit
A,
this
week
marks
the
arrival
of
the
S1000RR,
the
most
powerful
production
motorcycle
ever.
That’s
not
sales
hyperbole,
either,
it’s
a
fact.
The
magazine
reviews
are
uniformly
over-the-top
in
their
praise,
not
just
of
the
quickness,
but
the
driveability.
Features
like
ABS
and
Dynamic
Traction
Control
made
heroes
of
some
testers
at
the
intro
in
Portugal.
So,
what
does
it
feel
like
to
ride
one?
Later
this
month,
BMW
is
hosting
their
dealers
at
a
track
in
Ft
Lauderdale
to
find
out.
You
can
ask
Peter
Bobowski
when
he
gets
back
what
193hp
feels
like.
We
will
have
a
demonstrator
for
interested,
serious
parties.
It
won’t
be
our
only
demo
bike;
BMW
really
stepped
up
last
year
with
a
great
demo
program
that
lets
us
send
you
out
on
extended
rides.
We
may
not
have
every
model,
but
we
will
have
the
most
popular
ones
and
when
they
achieve
2000
miles
we
can
sell
them
at
a
discounted
price.
Please
let
us
know
if
you
are
interested
in
purchasing
demos.
Triumph
also
runs
a
demo
program,
most
notably
for
their
new
Thunderbird.
The
Thunderbird
arrived
too
late
last
fall
to
make
a
big
splash
but
this
year
it
will
be
the
big
bore
weapon
of
choice
to
cruise
the
boulevards.
This
1600cc
vertical
twin
gives
Triumph
a
bike
that
goes
head-to
–head
with
HD
big
twins
and
large
metric
cruisers.
Triumphs’
2300cc
Rocket
III
is
also
still
available
and
in
fact
there’s
a
new
version
called
the
Roadster
coming
this
spring.
It
features
a
boost
in
hp
to
146
and
torque
is
up
to
163ft
lbs.
The
ergonomics
are
now
more
“standard”
than
cruiser.
Besides
these
big
cruisers,
Triumph
has
hinted
at
other
models
soon
to
come.
We
will
have
more
information
about
their
future
plans
after
the
dealer
meeting
in
February.
This
year
is
the
15
year
anniversary
of
their
return
to
the
U.S.
market,
having
left
in
1983.
This
spring
will
also
see
a
re-designed
R1200RT
and
R1200GS.
The
major
change
is
in
the
engine
which
will
feature
double
overhead
cams
for
the
first
time.
The
engines
basically
follow
the
HP2
Sport
design
and
have
a
distinctive
cam
cover.
While
not
claiming
any
large
boost
in
power,
it
is
said
that
the
new
engine
has
to
be
ridden
to
be
appreciated
as
to
how
much
better
it
is.
There
will
be
demos.
New
hand
controls/switchgear
are
on
board
both
machines.
In
order
to
make
room
for
all
this
new
hardware,
we
are
making
all
sorts
of
deals
on
2009
models.
There
are
incentives
from
both
brands
on
most
models.
For
example
you
can
get
3.9%
financing
for
60
months
or
a
$1600
discount
on
’09
R1200GS
or
R12GS
Adventure.
Triumph
has
a
zero
down,
no
payments
for
six
months
deal
to
get
you
on
an
’09
Daytona
675.
Check
our
website
for
details
on
all
these
programs.
