John
Griffith's
February
Fishing
Tips |
|
February
typically
brings
us
radical
mood
swings
of
weather.
It
has
snowed
before,
and
been
beautiful
with
clear,
calm
days.
I've
seen
both
the
same
day:
snow
right
down
to
the
surf's
edge
under
a
clear
but
cold
sky.
But
we
usually
get
some
clear,
fairly
warm
and
windless
days,
too.
These
can
be
the
best
days
all
year
to
get
out
on
the
water.
Crowds
and
the
prevailing
northwest
winds
and
choppy
seas
of
summer
are
still
months
away,
crabbing
is
good,
and
the
ocean
can
be
almost
flat.
There's
never
a
time
to
lay
down
your
guard
outdoors,
to
push
things
beyond
prudence
or
go
farther
than
you
can
get
back
inside
port
before
a
blow-up,
but
with
reasonable
caution
great
times
can
be
had
in
February.
Nearby
reefs
can
surrender
good
catches
of
rockfish
and
lingcod,
the
latter
moving
into
shallow
water
to
stake
out
spawning
ledges
and
overhangs.
The
ocean
is
open
for
crabbing,
and
the
bay
is
always
open.
Steelhead
fishing
usually
peaks
in
January.
It
won't
necessarily
be
uncrowded
on
steelhead
streams
this
month,
but
it's
typically
less
crowded
than
it
is
around
New
Year's.
Our
"late
rivers,"
the
Elk
and
Sixes,
come
into
their
best
steelhead
fishing
in
February.
Bright
(meaning
fresh
from
the
ocean)
steelhead
will
still
be
coming
into
all
our
streams
this
month,
but
we'll
start
encountering
run-backs
(steelhead
with
darker
colored
sides
that
might
have
spawned
or
are
nearly
ready
to).
But
even
if
the
decision
for
a
steelhead
fishing
excursion
takes
you
to
a
river
where
the
crowd
hasn't
backed
off
yet,
if
this
month
follows
the
examples
of
many
preceding
Februaries
it
could
be
the
prettiest
day
you'll
spend
outdoors
all
year.

Fishing
Buzz |
Crabbing-
Crab
fishermen
continue
to
have
success
in
our
coastal
waters.
We
have
spoken
with
several
fishermen
who
have
reached
their
limit
in
a
very
short
amount
of
time.
Even
those
crabbing
inside
the
bar
have
had
great
success.
I
was
fortunate
to
receive
some
fresh
crab
recently,
and
I
was
happy
to
see
that
all
of
the
Dungeness
caught
were
very
full
and
healthy.
Steelhead-
I
have
received
mixed
reports
of
success
from
steelhead
fisherman
this
winter
due
to
inclement
weather
and
inconsistent
water
levels
and
temperatures.
If

Y
Family
Entry |
This
month’s
Y
Family
Entry
comes
from
Mr.
and
Mrs.
West
of
Jefferson,
Oregon.
They
are
industry
enthusiasts
who
have
a
particular
interest
in
technical
training
opportunities
for
marine
mechanics.
They
have
shared
some
very
interesting
facts
about
the
marine
mechanic
trade
and
are
looking
for
some
feedback
from
our
readers.
If
you
have
any
information
on
any
of
the
questions
posed
in
this
article,
please
contact
me
at
ryanlancaster@ymarinaboats.com.
The
Marine
Mechanics
Industry
has
predicted
growth
of
16%
over
the
next
few
years.
This
is
significant
growth
given
the
sate
of
our
national
economy.
Training
courses
for
marine
mechanics
last
for
1
or
2
years,
and
you
can
earn
an
Associates
Degree
or
Diploma
upon
completion
of
these
courses.
These
courses
prepare
the
student
for
an
entry
level
opportunity
in
what
some
consider
to
be
one
of
the
most
exciting
fields
in
technical
education.
Graduates
can
expect
to
earn
a
starting
wage
of
$12
to
$14
per
hour,
which
will
increase
as
the
student
develops
higher
skills.
Students
entering
these
programs
should
have
a
broad
base
of
knowledge
as
all
types
of
marine
motors,
drive
systems
and
power
supplies
will
be
encountered.
If
you
are
interested
in
Marine
Diesel
training,
it
can
lead
to
worldwide
travel
as
crew
on
a
luxury
liner
or
the
fast
paced
demands
of
a
fishing
fleet
in
Alaska
and
other
major
ports.
Money
making
opportunities
are
very
much
alive
in
the
marine
industry.
Currently,
many
of
these
technical
schools
are
located
in
the
Eastern
United
States.
These
institutions
include;
Marine
Mechanical
Institute,
Wisconsin
Indianhead
Technical
College,
and
Community
Colleges
in
St.
Petersburg
and
Sarasota
Florida.
Unfortunately
there
are
not
many
of
these
opportunities
out
west.
If
anyone
has
any
information
about
marine
technician
training
opportunities
in
Oregon,
Washington
State,
or
California,
please
contact
us
immediately,
so
we
can
spread
the
word.
Let
us
continue
fighting
for
more
opportunities,
and
be
a
leader
in
the
mission
for
higher
education.
Financial
aid
is
available
in
many
forms
to
assist
anyone
who
has
the
desire
to
retain
or
develop
a
new
skill,
and
those
just
beginning
in
the
workforce
right
out
of
high
school.
This
field
is
often
overlooked,
and
may
hold
the
key
to
many
educational
and
professional
opportunities.
Help
us
share
the
knowledge
in
promoting
new
opportunities,
such
as
this,
to
those
who
look
to
achieve
and
love
boating!
I
would
like
to
thank
the

sharing
this
wonderful
opportunity
with
our
Y

Members,
and
I
encourage
anyone
with
any

about
opportunities
to
please

Also,
please
remember
that
we
are
interested
in
just
about
anything
that
you
would
like

the
Y

We
would

February's

is
brought

I've

that
big!"
-"Hey!
Let's

-"Hank,
those

-"Hey,

-"I

-"I
