May 2010

Welcome
April 2010
Rhino Welcome The May Issue of our newsletter. It's almost summer, and temperatures are starting to inch up to triple digits. Don't be caught off guard this summer! Prepare yourself to escape to the mountains or head out to the lake and cool off. Your whole family will thank you for it!

Beat the Heat!
There is no escaping the summer heat. Or is there?
Going for a ride can be a great way to beat the heat, though picking your way through heavy traffic-or crossing the desert-when it's 100 degrees in the shade doesn't quite qualify as "good ride" material in our book. Lets face it, Phoenix can be pretty miserable in the summer. But there are several things you can do to make your experience bearable and even pleasant.

Hydrate or Die Obviously one of the most important things you can bring is water, and lots of it. Be sure to bring at least several liters of water or consider buying a Camelback to drink on the go!

Plan around the heat Why go through the heat when you can beat it or wait it out? Plan your routes so that you are riding at cooler hours, or plan your route so that you are in cooler parts of the state at the hottest times of the day.

Vented Clothing Boots, gloves, jackets you name it, it's probably got a vented version. Service manager Dwight Klapper gives this advice, "When I go riding in the summer afternoons, I do several things. First I get my t-shirt all wet and then I put on my thin leather jacket with the back vents opened and the front vents closed. This keeps air circulating through the top of the jacket without drying the t-shirt in 10 minutes. As time goes on, I gradually open the vents in the front to permit more airflow." A High quality helmet can make a huge difference as well.

A wet bandanna A cool wet bandanna on your neck can be a life saver, it helps you keep your head and neck cool while you ride. Some companies like Zan headgear specifically make a bandanna with absorbent crystals in them to last longer.

Wear lighter colors A known but frequently ignored fact is that lighter colors are less heat absorbent. Take advantage of that!

Be sure to go with a friend If you are riding off-road it's always smart to go with a friend in-case trouble arises. You don't want to be caught stranded 10-miles away from your ride in 110 degree weather. With a friend he can either help you repair your bike or help you get back to base camp.

Be safe and enjoy the heat everyone!
