| Motorcycle
GPS |
| Why
is
it
5x
more
expensive?!? |
If
your
like
me,
when
you
found
out
that
there
were
GPS
units
built
specifically
for
street
bikes,
like
the
Garmin
Zumo
550
GPS,
you
probably
got
excited
until
you
saw
the
prices.
For
a
motorcycle
GPS
you
can
expect
to
pay
anywhere
from
$390-$900!
(the
Garmin
Zumo
550
GPS
is
$635
on
Amazon)
That
is
about
5X
the
cost
of
a
car
GPS.
So
why
all
the
added
cost?
First,
these
units
have
to
be
sealed/weatherproofed.
Water
is
obviously
detrimental
to
electronics,
as
well
as
extreme
heat
and
cold.
Harsh
vibrations
from
motorcycles
are
also
known
to
cause
problems.
The
protection
extra
protection
from
the
elements
probably
adds
the
greatest
cost
to
the
GPS
Second,
Many
motorcycle
GPS
units
like
The
Garmin
Zumo
550
also
includes
bluetooth
compatibility
and
a
wireless
headset
which
goes
inside
your
helmet
to
hear
instructions
--
that
adds
to
the
cost
as
well.
Finally
many
such
GPS
have
been
designed
with
riders
in
mind.
It's
also
intuitive,
with
a
glove-friendly
touch
screen
with
left-handed
controls
that
make
it
easy
to
operate.
There's
a
bright,
sunlight-readable,
UV-resistant
display
that
makes
it
easy
to
view,
as
well
as
a
unique
motorcycle
console
for
trip
information.
Of
course
most
of
us
don't
have
$600
bucks
to
blow
on
a
GPS
so
there
are
other
cheaper
options.
Probably
the
simplest
and
cheapest
way
that
I
found
to
get
the
benefits
of
a
GPS
on
your
bike
is
to
use
an
existing
GPS
and
a
waterproof/element
proof
cover.
Although
you
don't
get
sound
or
any
of
the
cool
features
of
the
Motorcycle
specific
GPS,
you
can
use
your
existing
GPS
and
protect
it
from
the
elements
at
a
fraction
of
the
cost.
although
this
approach
isn't
as
nice
as
motorcycle
devices
(You
will
probably
have
to
stop
to
use
the
touch
screen,
you
can't
hear
it,
and
you
don't
get
any
special
features)
it
can
sure
save
you
alot
of
money!

| Trail
riding
for
beginners |
| Some
basic
things
to
remember
for
those
new
to
trail
riding |
Going
out
to
the
woods
or
desert
to
hit
the
trails
is
a
great
idea
any
time
of
the
year!
but
for
those
who
are
new
to
trial
riding,
there
is
a
lot
of
wisdom
to
be
shared
from
guys
who
have
alot
of
riding
experience.
Safety
considerations
- Plan
ahead.
The
weather/temperature
can
change
rapidly.
If
riding
in
the
summer
be
sure
to
avoid
the
hottest
parts
of
the
day.
- Carry
all
necessary
supplies
including
an
emergency
repair
kit
(definitely
bring
plugs
with
a
two
stroke),
food,
water
and
warm
or
vented
clothing.
- Develop
a
supply
checklist
to
include
the
above
items
and
other
equipment
such
as
area
maps
and
guides,
protective
gear,
flashlight,
sunscreen,
etc.
- Know
what
to
wear.
Quality
helmets,
gloves,
boots,
goggles
and
protective
clothing
will
keep
you
comfortable
and
help
prevent
serious
injuries.
- Know
your
vehicle.
Keep
it
in
good
condition
and
read
the
owner's
manual.
- Let
someone
know
where
you're
going
and
when
you
expect
to
return.
Sometimes
cell
phones
can
get
signal
in
the
desert
or
forest.
It's
not
a
bad
idea
to
bring
it
for
emergencies
just
in
case.
- Travel
with
other
people.
If
you
do
ride
solo,
carry
a
Spot
GPS
unit
that
you
can
contact
others
if
you
are
in
serious
trouble.
- Know
before
leaving
what
to
do
in
an
emergency.
Trail
use
guidelines
- Respect
all
private
and
public
property
and
the
rights
of
all
trail
users
to
enjoy
nature.
- Park
considerately
without
blocking
other
vehicles
or
impeding
access
to
trails.
- Keep
to
the
right
when
meeting
other
trail
users
and
yield
the
right-of-way
to
downhill
traffic.
Also
let
riders
approaching
how
many
are
in
your
group.
(Fingers
work
great
here)
- Slow
down
and
use
caution
when
approaching
or
overtaking
another.
- Travel
only
where
motorized
vehicles
are
permitted.
- Respect
designated
areas,
trail
use
signs
and
established
tracks.
Stay
out
of
wilderness
areas.
- Do
not
block
the
trail
when
stopping.
- Do
not
disturb
wildlife.
Avoid
all
areas
posted
for
their
protection
or
feeding.
- Do
not
litter.
Pack
out
everything
you
pack
in.
If
we
want
to
keep
our
riding
areas,
do
one
better
and
help
pack
out
someone
else’s
trash.
Leave
the
area
better
than
you
found
it.
- Realize
that
your
destination
and
travel
speed
are
determined
by
your
equipment,
ability,
terrain,
weather
and
traffic
on
the
trail.
Plan
accordingly.
- Do
not
interfere
with
or
harass
others.
Recognize
that
people
form
opinions
about
all
motorized
vehicle
users
based
on
your
actions.
