| 2010
Oregon
Tuna
Classic |
|
The
Oregon
Tuna
Classic
began
as
a
result
of
a
few
compassionate
fishermen
and
one
great
idea.
Bud
Hosner
and
his
wife,
Michelle
Seely,
had
created
a
way
to
fight
hunger
in
Oregon
while
at
the
same
time
allowing
Oregon
anglers
to
do
what
they
love,
fish
for
tuna.
The
couple
found
themselves
constantly
sharing
their
own
catch
with
friends
and
family
and
began
to
wonder
why
they
were
giving
so
much
food
to
those
that
had
more
than
enough,
while
Oregon's
hungry
did
not
benefit
from
their
catch.
So,
in
2005
they
decided
to
do
something
different.
In
2005
a
small
group
of
fisherman
met
with
Hosner
to
organize
the
first
annual
"I
Fish
for
Food"
tournament.
Twenty
teams
competed
to
catch
as
many
tuna
as
they
could,
up
to
their
limit,
in
one
day,
with
the
objective
of
giving
their
catch
to
those
in
need.
By
the
end
of
the
event,
over
one
hundred
tuna,
totaling
over
2100
pounds
of
Albacore
were
caught
and
ready
to
be
canned
for
donation
to
the
Oregon
Food
Bank
Network.
The
event
was
an
immediate
success.
The
group
re-organized
in
2006
and
created
the
tournament
as
we
now
know
it
today,
the
Oregon
Tuna
Classic.
The
Tuna
Classic
has
been
registered
with
the
IRS
as
a
non-profit
organization.
A
committee
of
all
volunteers
was
established
to
secure
sponsorships
to
successfully
manage
all
future
OTC
events.
Today,
the
Oregon
Tuna
classic
is
the
fastest
growing
charitable
tournament
on
the
west
coast.
Since
2006,
over
44,300
pounds
of
tuna
and
over
$103,000
have
been
donated
to
the
Oregon
Food
Bank.
The
Oregon
Tuna
Classic's
donation
helped
the
Oregon
Food
Bank
purchase
six
pounds
of
food
for
every
one
dollar
donated,
equivalent
to
a
contribution
of
over
662,300
pounds
of
food.
Despite
the
upside
down
economy,
the
2009
OTC
turned
out
more
participants
than
ever
before.
Well
over
14,000
people
participated
in
the
event,
along
with
a
host
of
sponsors
and
generous
donations.
Last
summer’s
event
donated
18,600
pounds
of
tuna
to
coastal
food
banks
alone.
The
outlook
for
this
year’s
event
is
bigger
and
better
than
ever.
Y
Marina
is
a
proud
sponsor
of
the
2010
Oregon
Tuna
Classic,
and
would
like
to
encourage
you
to
participate
in
this
year's
event.
Our
local
tournament,
held
in
Charleston,
will
begin
on
August
14th.
Registration
for
the
event
will
be
held
on
August
8th,
and
your
team's
entry
fee
will
be
a
mere
$300.
Late
registration
will
be
held
on
August
11th,
and
will
come
at
an
entry
fee
of
$400
per
team.
The
winning
team
will
win
a
$3,000
grand
prize.

John
Griffith's
August
Fishing
Tips |
There's
more
to
do
in
August
than
most
of
us
have
time
to
do
it.
On
the
small
boat
side
there's
salmon
fishing
in
the
mainstem
Umpqua
and
probably
the
Coquille,
and
Coos
Bay
salmon
fishing
could
start
up
late
in
the
month.
Add
to
that
bass
fishing
in
Tenmile
Lakes
and
others
up
by
Florence,
plus
smallmouth
bass
above
Scottsburg
on
the
Umpqua.
Summer
steelhead
fishing
on
the
lower
Rogue
is
a
southern
Oregon
tradition
back
to
the
time
of
Zane
Grey.
It
always
gets
underway
this
month.
There's
a
few
legal
techniques,
but
fly
fishing
is
what
it's
most
famous
for.
They're
smaller
than
steelhead
than
we
have
in
the
Deschutes
or
Umpqua,
and
take
smaller
flies
--
12-
to
16-inches
long
and
size
8
and
10
flies.
But
about
the
time
you
think
there's
nothing
bigger
in
the
river
than
the
so-called
"half-pounders,"
a
steelhead
over
5
pounds
will
grab
and
shake
you
back
into
an
alert
condition.
I
must
confess
that
more
times
than
not,
those
meetings
have
favored
the
steelhead
rather
than
me,
which,
despite
a
lost
fly
and
that
empty
feeling,
doesn't
mean
they
all
weren't
memorable.
I
don't
know
what
power
of
memory
it
is
that
selects
what
stays
or
goes.
But
I
still
see
the
vision
of
the
daring
and
successful
leap
to
freedom
of
a
particularly
strong
steelhead
I
lost
in
Walker
Riffle
28
years
ago,
and
another
at
Illahe
Riffle,
and
the
one
just
down
from
there
at
the
head
of
Foster
Riffle.
None
of
those
mental
images
brings
a
feeling
of
regret.
It's
more
like
joy
to
have
had
the
chance
to
be
tied
to
a
perfectly
wild
animal,
if
only
briefly.
On
the
ocean
side,
the
August
headliner
event
is
the
Oregon
Tuna
Classic
the
weekend
of
the
14th.
Come
by
Y
Marina
for
details,
and
don't
procrastinate
on
registering
if
you
want
to
fish
it.
I
know
of
a
few
locals
who
missed
out
in
years
past.
We
have
an
offshore
salmon
fishery
this
year
as
well.
Stop
into
Y
Marina
for
details
on
their
1st
Annual
Salmon
Showdown.
August
always
is
a
fun
month
for
boating
and
fishing,
and
this
year's
edition
looks
to
be
more
so
than
recent
years
past.

Fishing
Buzz |
Windy
weather
conditions
have
created
problems
for
many
fishermen
along
the
Oregon
Coast
this
summer.
From
bass
fishing
to
salmon
fishing,
boats
have
literally
been
blown
off
the
water
for
the
past
four
weeks.
Fortunately,
there
is
hope
on
the
horizon.
Predictions
for
the
first
week
of
August
look
great
for
northwest
fishermen,
especially
those
along
the
Oregon
Coast.
Here
is
what
we
have
to
look
forward
to
in
August;
Salmon
-Coho
and
chinook
seasons
are
in
full
swing.
The
run
seems
to
have
finally
made
its
way
to
southern
Oregon,
as
more
and
more
salmon
have
been
netted
each
day.
Windy
and
rough
conditions
have
presented
problems
for
many
fishermen,
but
the
outlook
for
calmer
waters
is
much
better
in
the
early
days
of
August.
Please
remember
to
bring
your
catch
into
Y
Marina’s
Coos
Bay
location
to
enter
our
1st
Annual
Salmon
Showdown.
This
contest
has
been
extended
to
August
31st,
so

today!
The
winner
of
this
year’s
event
will
win
a
prize
valued
at
up
to
$900.

are
popular

as
well,

we
are
going
to

was
sent
to
us
from
Judy
and
Karl
who
recently
purchased
a
2010

Judy

are
excited
about
their
new
purchase
and
were
nice
enough
to
share
a
photo
of
a
successful
day
aboard
their
new
Duckworth.
Hi
Scott,
What
a
wonderful
boat.
We
are
enjoying
it
to
the
max!
You
did
us
well
and
we
are
thoroughly
happy.
It
is
so
pretty!
Enough
power
and
we
are
now
fishing
the
ocean
every
day.
Here
is
a
picture
of
my
latest
catch.
Judy
Y
Marina
would
like
to
thank
both
Judy
and
Karl
for
giving
us
the
opportunity
to
work
with
them
on
their
new
boat
purchase.
We
are
sure
that
this
boat
will
give
them
plenty
of
enjoyment
for
many
years
to
come.
We
only
hope
to
match
Judy’s
success
on
our
next
fishing
adventure.

Joke
of
the
Month |
|
The
Purchase
A
woman
goes
into
a
shop
to
buy
a
rod
and
reel
as
a
gift
She
doesn't
know
which
one
to
get
so
she
just
grabs
one
and
goes
over
to
the
counter
where
there's
a
shop
assistant
wearing
dark
shades.
"Excuse
me
sir"
she
says
"can
you
tell
me
anything
about
this
rod
and
reel?"
The
assistant
replies
"Ma'am
I'm
blind
but
if
you
drop
it
on
the
counter
I
can
tell
you
everything
you
need
to
know
about
it
from
the
sound
it
makes."
She
didn't
believe
him,
but
dropped
it
on
the
counter
anyway.
He
said,
"That's
a
6'
graphite
rod
with
a
Zebco
202
reel
and
10
lb.
test
line...It's
a
good
all
around
rod
and
reel
and
it's
only
$20.00".
The
lady
said,
"It's
amazing
that
you
can
tell
all
that
just
by
the
sound
of
it
dropping
on
the
counter.
I
think
it's
what
I'm
looking
for
so
I'll
take
it."
He
walks
behind
the
counter
to
the
register,
and
in
the
meantime
the
woman
breaks
wind
big-time.
At
first
she
is
embarrassed
but
then
realizes
that
there
is
no
way
he
could
tell
it
was
her...being
blind
he
wouldn't
know
that
she
was
the
only
person
around.
The
assistant
rings
up
the
sale
and
says,
"That
will
be
$25.50."
She
says,
"But
didn't
you
say
it
was
$20.00?"
"Yes
ma'am,
the
rod
and
reel
is
$20.00,
but
the
duck
call
is
$3.00,
and
the
catfish
stink
bait
is
$2.50."
