John Griffith's September Fishing Tips
September is when many of us began fishing the Coos, Coquille and Siuslaw estuaries for salmon. In recent years, however, the starting month has become August, and for the Umpqua it's July. July was very good on the Umpqua, and August was good on the Coos with mixed results on the Coquille early.

A friend who recently retired from a career in fish biology told me that when spawning runs of salmon seem early and strong it typically doesn't mean the run is early; it means it's going to be a good season and bring more fish than usual. We'll see if that observation holds true this year.

Not only were lots of fish coming into bays early this season, but they were fat. They had deep bellies and thick sides, running heavy for their length. It was just more evidence of what we who fish and go out upon the water already knew: Overall the ocean is healthy. There's always cycles, but environmentalists' claims of chronic ill-health are just fabrications they invent to trick the gullible out of more money and political influence.

September Fishing Buzz
The weather seems to have subsided and the bite is on for Northwest Fishermen. The highly anticipated salmon season has finally arrived after about a month delay, and fishermen along the West Coast have been wildly successful. Tuna fishermen have had another wonderful season, and we are looking forward to what the next few months will bring. Here is what August had to offer;

Salmon -Coho and chinook seasons are finally in full swing! Fishermen have been netting salmon from the Rogue to the Columbia, and everywhere in between. There has been some monster Chinook caught on the Rogue and Umpqua, weighing almost 50lbs in some cases. We have seen several Salmon through Y Marina the past few days ranging from 14-24 pounds. There are local salmon derbies held all across the state this time of year, and there has never been a better year to participate. It has been almost 10 years since we have had a season this good, so make sure to get out after some salmon this September. Send me an email with your Chinook or Coho catch and I will post your photo on our all new “Hunting & Fishing Brag Board!”

Bass - Bass fishing in our small local lakes has been very successful in the month of August, though windy and somewhat cold weather had plagued some coastal lakes. Ten Mile has been a popular spot for catching bass thus far, and should continue to be good through the middle of September.

Tuna - Tuna fishing has been dynamite for Northwest fishermen in 2010. This year’s Oregon Tuna Classic landed over 3,000 lbs of albacore in the Charleston tournament alone! The warmer waters continue to be 20-40 miles offshore, making a long day of fishing, but it has been well worth it for the numbers landed thus far. One boat in Ilwaco landed 116 fish in two days! Their story is featured in this month’s Y Family Entry.

Don’t forget, Y Marina now carries an huge selection of North Country Lures, and it’s Super Hoochie time! Y Family Members have had great success with North Country Super Hoochies, Sonic Bells, and Super Magnums over the past couple of years. These lures are American made, right up the road in Florence, Oregon by the Dean and Pat Hendricks. We have a large selection of lures for all occasions, so hurry in to get your lures while supplies last! Click on the photograph below for more information on the Hendricks family and their business, North Country Lures and Flies.

For any additional fishing tips feel free to contact Dean Hendricks of North Country Lures and Flies LLC. Dean had been a professional guide for over 27 years, with roots all over Northern California. He is still very much involved with the ODFW and many of the local fisheries programs. Mr. Hendricks is in constant contact with a network of professional fishing guides and is happy to provide any knowledge that he comes across. You can email Dean Hendricks at northcountryluresandfles@yahoo.com.

Fishing & Hunting Brag Board
We are proud to introduce Y Marin’s first ever “Fishing & Hunting Brag Board!” This is a special place where fishermen and hunters can share their stories and/or photographs with our entire Y Marina Family. This is a place where a “fishing or hunting story” becomes a reality, and a place to prove to your friends and the entire virtual world that the monster in the story was actually landed. These photographs will be posted on our brand new Brag Board at Y Marina’s Coos Bay location, as well as the Photo Gallery page on our website.

One of our fine rigging technicians, Matt Kruzick and his wife had came up with this wonderful idea, so we are going to feature one of their recent hunting trips for our first ever “Brag Board” posting. This beautiful black bear was shot right along the Umpqua River. Matt’s son takes the liberty of showing off the recent kill in this awesome photograph.

Do you have an impressive catch that you would like to share with our readers? We would love to hear about it! Send us a photograph and a short description of the story and we will post it in next month’s Y Family Newsletter. It’s as easy as clicking on the “Share and Win” icon in this newsletter. We are excited to see what our Y Family members have been up to this summer.

September Y Family Entry
For September’s Y Family Entry we are going to feature a cool fishing success story and photograph sent to us from Auburn Sports in Washington. This group of fishermen was fishing for albacore outside of Ilwaco, Washington. They spent two days on the water and were extremely successful. Here is their story;

We fished Ilwaco on Saturday 8-15-10 and Sunday 8-16-10. We had a four man crew both days .The fishing was great and you could not have asked for better weather!

The water was very calm both days and very little wind most of the weekend. On Saturday we were all alone, but the temp looked good and the water color looked great. We started by picking up and few on the troll and a couple on live bait. We had a hand full of fish in the boat when we turned one of our troll fish into a wide open bite. The fish were coming over the rail and the boat was filling up fast. Somewhere around 35 fish into our stop the wind had blown us off the school. We took a few minutes to clear the deck and regroup.

We set our troll gear back out but only made it about 100 yards and hooked up! We went back to work on the live bait and it was game on, again! We were crushing them! We lost the school at 11:30 AM (we had been on the fish for about 3 hours) and by this time our bait was severely depleted. We went back on the troll and picked up a few singles but were not able to get another bait stop going. We ended the day with 54 tuna in the box. Wow what a day!

On Sunday we switched boats and swapped out two of our crew members for two fresh ones. We headed back to the same area from the day before and after about 30 minutes we hooked our first fish on the troll. We went to the live bait and all four of us were hooked up. The bite was on! We kept the bite going for 7 hours!

By this point we were out of bait, out of ice, and out of room. Even after we were out of bait we made a few casts with the swim baits, just to see if they would work, and it was instant hook-ups. We left biting fish a little after 2pm to head for the dock. Our total count was 62 tuna and our motors were struggling on the way in. It was a perfect day on the water! One fish on the troll and never fired to motor again till it was time to head home.

Total count for the weekend was 116 tuna landed. The biggest was 33 pounds and we had countless hook ups. A special thanks to the guys on the Stratus, who were fishing near us on Sunday, for staying well clear of our bait stop and allowing us to have an epic day (I know it is hard to do). For those of you that do not know, approaching a boat or entering the radius of a boat on a bait stop is a very bad edicate and will often send the fish down.

If you have a testimonial or an interesting story that you would like to share with our Y Family Members, we would love to feature it in our October Y Family Newsletter. Please remember that we are interested in just about anything that you would like to share with the Y Marina Family, especially all of the stories of interesting experience you have had on the water. We would love to try your recipes, share your experiences and feature photos of you and your friends and family out on the water. Simply email Ryan Lancaster with your story and you may be featured in next month’s newsletter. If email is not your preferred method of communication, feel free to give me a call at 541-888-5501, or come and talk with me in person! Just ask for Ryan. We look forward to hearing from you very soon!

Joke of the Month
    Ten common fishing terms explained:

  1. Catch and Release - A conservation motion that happens most often right before the local Fish and Game officer pulls over a boat that has caught over it's limit.

  2. Hook - (1) A curved piece of metal used to catch fish. (2) A clever advertisement to entice a fisherman to spend his live savings on a new rod and reel. (3) The punch administered by said fisherman's wife after he spends their life savings (see also, Right Hook, Left Hook).

  3. Line - Something you give your co-workers when they ask on Monday how your fishing went the past weekend.

  4. Lure - An object that is semi-enticing to fish, but will drive an angler into such a frenzy that he will charge his credit card to the limit before exiting the tackle shop.

  5. Reel - A weighted object that causes a rod to sink quickly when dropped overboard.

  6. Rod - An attractively painted length of fiberglass that keeps an angler from ever getting too close to a fish.

  7. School - A grouping in which fish are taught to avoid your $29.99 lures and hold out for spam instead.

  8. Tackle - What your last catch did to you as you reeled him in, but just before he wrestled free and jumped back overboard.

  9. Tackle Box - A box shaped alarmingly like your comprehensive first aid kit. Only a tackle box contains many sharp objects, so that when you reach in the wrong box blindly to get a Band Aid, you soon find that you need more than one.

  10. Test - (1) The amount of strength a fishing line affords an angler when fighting fish in a specific weight range. (2) A measure of your creativity in blaming "that darn line" for once again losing the fish.
