Welcome Y Family Members!
Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to personally thank you for being a part of our ever-growing Y Marina Family. I would like to start October’s newsletter by welcoming all of our new readers. This month’s newsletter contains helpful information about Y Marina and the marine industry as a whole, as well as reader contributed stories, recipes, jokes and more!

The long awaited salmon run has been fantastic for local fishermen. As the chinook head up river, the influx of coho from the ocean into our inlet waters has begun. Coho fishermen all along the Southern Oregon Coast have been extremely successful. Some have caught and released more than 18 coho in a single day!

As always, we encourage you to write in and share your wonderful stories and experiences, as it has added an exciting new feature to our Y Family Newsletter. All contributors to the Y Family Newsletter will be rewarded for their efforts. Check out this month’s contest details to find out how you can win cool prizes courtesy of Y Marina. October Fishing Buzz
Local salmon fishermen have been blessed with a wonderful chinook and coho salmon season in 2010. Fishing has been absolutely spectacular for nearly everyone with bait in the water. Oddly enough, crabbing also remained very strong in our late summer months, and should only pick up as we get into October. Here is some of what September had to offer;

Salmon -Though many chinook have continued their migration up river, some still remain in our inlet waters. Thousands of fish have been landed in the Coos Bay-North Bend area, and even more have evaded capture. Coho are now the focus of many Northwest fishermen, and they are coming into our bays and inlet waters in huge numbers. One fisherman caught and released 18 coho in the Coquille River in only about 6 hours of fishing. Needless to say, it was not hard to find a keeper.

Cut plug herring seems to be the focus for most trying to land chinook, while coho fisherman have been raving about the Super Hoochie from North Country Lures and Flies. The preferred color by most of the fishermen is pink, or something very bright in color. Please feel free to send me an email with your Chinook or Coho catch and I will post your photo on our all new “Y Marina Brag Board!”

Crabbing - Crab fishermen out of Charleston and Bandon continue to have success. The crab have been very large and very full, and reaching their limit has not been an issue. Crabbing should continue to pick up as we head into October.

Don’t forget, Y Marina now carries an large selection of North Country Lures, and it’s Super Hoochie time! Y Family Members have had great success with North Country Super Hoochies, Sonic Bells, and Super Magnums over the past couple of years. These lures are American made, right up the road in Florence, Oregon by the Dean and Pat Hendricks. These lures have been extremely popular in 2010, so hurry in to get your lures while supplies last! Click on the photograph below for more information on the Hendricks family and their business, North Country Lures and Flies.

For any additional fishing tips feel free to contact Dean Hendricks of North Country Lures and Flies LLC. Dean had been a professional guide for over 27 years, with roots all over Northern California. He is still very much involved with the ODFW and many of the local fisheries programs. Mr. Hendricks is in constant contact with a network of professional fishing guides and is happy to provide any knowledge that he comes across. You can email Dean Hendricks at northcountryluresandfles@yahoo.com.

Y Marina Brag Board
We would like to thank Don Ruby for sharing his Chinook salmon catch for this month’s “Brag Board” entry. Remember, this “Brag Board” is a special place where hunters, fishermen and boaters can share their stories and/or photographs with our Y Marina Family. This is a place where a “fishing or hunting story” becomes a reality, and where a day of fun on the lake becomes a memory that will last a lifetime. These photographs will also be featured on our brand new Brag Board at Y Marina’s Coos Bay location, as well as the Photo Gallery page on our website.

Don Ruby landed this beautiful Chinook salmon on Monday, September 27th. The fish was 24 pounds 3 ounces and was quite the specimen. This fish is one of Many that Don has caught over the past few months, as salmon fishing in our local waters has been booming.

Do you have an impressive catch that you would like to share with our readers? We would love to hear about it! Send us a photograph and a short description of the story and we will post it in next month’s Y Family Newsletter. It’s as easy as clicking on the “Share and Win” icon in this newsletter. We are excited to see what our Y Family members have been up to this fall.

October Y Family Entry
For October’s Y Family Entry we are going to feature a very thoughtful testimonial sent from Y Family Member, Ken Murphy. Along with this testimonial, Ken and his wife Candice also shared a wonderful recipe, joke of the month and a quite comical “Story from the Ramp,” all which are featured in this month’s newsletter. We want to thank Ken for all of his hard work and kind words shared in this month’s Y Family Newsletter.

Dear “Y” Marina Staff,

It has been a year since I have come to you to find an outboard motor for my little 16 ft smoker craft that would handle the heavy winds of Coos Bay. You were extremely helpful in getting me just what I needed at a great price. Since this time I have put hundreds of crabs in my boat, spent hours with family and friends, and caught more bass than ever before. I am still coming by to get all my questions answered and am looking forward to great results this salmon season. You guys truly opened the doors to the bay area outdoor scene for me.

Many thanks,

Ken Murphy

If you have a testimonial or an interesting story that you would like to share with our Y Family Members, we would love to feature it in our next Y Family Newsletter. Please remember that we are interested in just about anything that you would like to share with the Y Marina Family, especially all of the stories of interesting experience you have had on the water. We would love to try your recipes, share your experiences and feature photos of you and your friends and family out on the water. Simply email Ryan Lancaster with your story and you may be featured in next month’s newsletter. If email is not your preferred method of communication, feel free to give me a call at 541-888-5501, or come and talk with me in person! Just ask for Ryan. We look forward to hearing from you very soon!

Stories from the Boat Ramp
October’s "Story from the Boat Ramp" comes from Ken Murphy of Coos Bay. This a short story of a brand new Seaswirl Striper that was in an unfortunate accident that happened at one of our local boat ramps. This story took place last summer and is titled “Rough Day at Empire Ramp.”

Not long ago my uncle and I were down at the Empire boat ramp in Coos Bay looking for a limit of crab. After a fairly successful tide we loaded the boat onto the trailer and were ready to head home. Just before we left a man was launching a beautiful Striper offshore boat with twin 115 HP motors. We started drooling over the vessel along with all of the other folks around and wondered why a boat like this was attempting a put in at this small confined launch. The offload was successful, and as the trailer was pulled from the water you could still see the chalking on the tires giving us the idea it was probably fresh from the factory and first time in the water.

We decided to hang out a bit and watch this “beast” haul off, and were not disappointed. The operator of the vessel showed off a bit revving those engines and then firing into reverse. This maneuver made him promptly slam-in to one of the large iron pillars holding the dock in place. Startled by the jolt he quickly threw it into drive and turned away from the pillar scratching the whole back panel and ripping away a large piece of the fiberglass. As he struggled to get free of the dock and pointed out towards the bay the “captain” gave the engines on last stir sending his fishing partner sprawling to the deck. At this point we were all trying to let him know a good sized chunk of boat was dragging along in the water behind him, but I think at that point he had decided to get to open water and lick his wounds away from the audience at the ramp.

If you have a fun or interesting story, we want to hear about it! Simply email your story to ryanlancaster@ymarinaboats.com. If email is not your thing, feel free to give me a call, 541-888-5501. I am always up for a good laugh. And of course, you will be rewarded for your entry. We look forward to seeing what you have to share!

October Recipe of the Month
For October’s recipe of the month we wanted to feature a recipe that one of our Y Family Members has shared with us. This delicious halibut recipe was sent in by Y Family Member Ken Murphy and his wife Candice. October’s recipe of the month is titled Candice’s Halibut Lasagna and it is truly delicious. We hope you enjoy October’s recipe of the month.

    Ingredients
  • 6 tablespoons butter or margarine, divided
  • 1 ½ lbs halibut steaks with bones removed and cut into 1-inch cubes.
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ¾ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ cups chicken broth
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 8-ounces lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
  • 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
  • Minced fresh parsley
    Preparation Instructions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Add halibut, garlic and thyme. Cook until fish flakes easily with a fork, about 10 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  2. Add the remaining butter to the skillet. Stir in flour and salt until smooth; cook and stir until golden brown. Gradually add broth and cream. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened.
  3. In a greased 13-inch x 9-inch x 2-inch baking dish, layer half of the noodles, halibut, white sauce and cheese. Repeat layers.
  4. Cover and bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.
  5. Uncover; bake 20 minutes longer or until bubbly.
  6. Let stand 15 minutes, serve and enjoy

Please contact us if you have the opportunity to try this awesome halibut lasagna recipe. We are interested to hear if our Y Family Members enjoyed the recipe as much as we did. Also, please do not forget to send in “your” favorite sea food recipe. Your recipe may be featured in our next Y Family Newsletter. If your entry is selected, you can receive cool gifts, courtesy of Y Marina.

Joke of the Month

Sunday School

One recent Sunday, a young boy arrived to his Sunday school class late. His teacher knew that the boy was usually very prompt and asked him if anything was wrong. The boy replied no, that he was going to go fishing, but that his dad told him that he needed to go to church instead. The teacher was very impressed and asked the boy if his father had explained to him why it was more important to go to church rather than to go fishing. To which the boy replied, "Yes, ma'am, he did. My dad said that he didn't have enough bait for both of us."

This month’s joke was brought to you by Y Family Member, Ken Murphy. If you have a boating or fishing joke that you would like to share in our next Y Family Newsletter please do not hesitate to contact us. You can share your joke by clicking on the "Share and Win" within this newsletter.
