Sea-Doo 2011 lineup: New entry-level platform includes on-water braking
BRP's 2011 lineup introduces a new platform for its entry-level segment: the Sea-Doo GTI watercraft. In addition, BRP now offers its on-water intelligent Brake & Reverse (iBR) system in every category. (BRP has also released information on its 2011 lineup of Sea-Doo boats — click here to read about them.)

BRP says the GTI platform provides increased control, greater close-quarter maneuverability and improved rider comfort and ergonomics with an attention-grabbing design. The company has expanded its iBR system and iTC (intelligent Throttle Control) system to the four GTI models, which also offer best-in-class fuel economy, according to BRP.

“We are delivering on our commitment to expand our award-winning technologies to a broader consumer base and at entry-level pricing,” Yves Leduc, vice president and general manager of BRP’s North America division, states in a news release. “We liken the impact of the iTC and iBR technologies to that of the ABS technology in the automobile industry — it will almost be impossible to imagine a watercraft without it. With the stunning new styling and design of the GTI platform coupled with the addition of the iTC and iBR technologies, we are able to further the momentum created since the launch of these technologies and drive our quest to reach more consumers.”

BRP makes further technological additions in the Sport segment with the 2011 Sea-Doo Wake 155 model featuring a new design and now being equipped with iBR and iTC, including the new interactive infocentre. BRP says it’s the only watercraft manufacturer offering tow-specific features including a retractable tow pylon, a removable board rack, wide-view mirrors and the interactive infocentre featuring user-friendly functions like ski mode, ECO mode, and cruise control for convenience at the helm.

The Luxury Performance segment grows with the addition of the new Sea-Doo GTX 215 watercraft, offering consumers more choices for luxury riding. The GTX 215 model offers a more powerful option to the nonsuspension version of the GTX, while the GTX 215 iS returns with full rider suspension.

“BRP continues to lead the industry with market-shaping products year after year, appealing to a worldwide audience,” stated Chris Dawson, vice president and general manager, International division. “Our 2011 Sea-Doo Musclecraft segment continues to outperform the industry and reinforces our leadership position in race-proven performance watercraft. This new lineup will deliver added safety and peace of mind as well as provide features designed for specific riding styles.”

Focused on performance enthusiasts, the Musclecraft segment adds the all-new Sea-Doo RXT-X aS* and RXT 260* watercraft. The 2011 RXT-X aS* model features an adjustable suspension system designed to maximize the S3 hull’s ability to handle rough water. By adjusting the suspension to match the water conditions, the rider can customize to his or her style of riding. The RXT 260* watercraft is fully equipped with exclusive iControl components, including the iBR and iTC systems in a nonsuspension platform. Rounding out the 2011 performance models is the Sea-Doo RXP-X 255* watercraft, the quickest two-seater watercraft, going from zero to 50 mph in 2.9 seconds.

*BRP notes in the press release that model names may differ for international markets. Not all models are available in all markets.

Congress members ask to suspend funding for motorcycle-only checkpoints 1 10 2010 PICKERINGTON, OH – October 1, 2010 – (Motor Sports Newswire) – Federal lawmakers have sent a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood asking him to suspend a grant program that provides money for law enforcement agencies to set up motorcycle-only traffic checkpoints, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

In a letter dated Sept. 30, House members told LaHood that safety-related funds would be better spent in other areas to improve motorcycling safety. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) drafted the letter and then circulated it to his congressional colleagues for signatures before sending it to LaHood.

Besides Sensenbrenner, those who signed the letter are Reps. Thomas Petri (R-Wis.), Walter Jones (R-N.C.), Aaron Schock (R-Ill.), Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.), Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), Denny Rehberg (R-Mont.), Lee Terry (R-Neb.), Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.).

Sensenbrenner and the other lawmakers want LaHood to suspend the Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstrations Grant program run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is an agency of the federal Transportation Department. Under the grant program, NHTSA plans to award up to $350,000 in total — to be divided among as many as five law enforcement agencies — to set up traffic checkpoints that target motorcyclists.

The demonstration program is modeled after a controversial program conducted in New York where the state police set up a series of checkpoints that targeted only motorcyclists, raising the ire of the AMA and motorcycling community. In 2008, for example, New York State Police announced plans to set up 15 checkpoints near motorcycling events that summer.

“Crash prevention must be the primary source of safety,” the lawmakers told LaHood in the letter. “With that being said, why does NHTSA continue to focus on secondary factors that do not prevent motorcycle crashes?”

The AMA fully supports the congressional letter to LaHood. The AMA earlier formally questioned the potential discriminatory and legal nature of the grant program. On Aug. 9, the AMA sent a letter to NHTSA Administrator David Strickland urging him to suspend the grant program until questions have been addressed. To read the letter, click here: http://www.americanmotorcyclist.com/legisltn/documents/Strickland_Law_Enforcement_Grant_8-9-2010.pdf.

While law enforcement officials may defend the program as a safety measure to decrease motorcycle crashes, injuries and fatalities, there is no proof that it’s effective, said Ed Moreland, AMA senior vice president for government relations. In fact, the practice has upset motorcyclists nationwide.

“The AMA believes that the best way for NHTSA to reduce motorcycle crashes is to employ proven strategies, such as rider education and motorcycle awareness programs, that decrease the likelihood of crashes from ever occurring,” Moreland said. “These strategies must be research-based, and motorcyclists would be much better served by applying the funding to the national motorcycle crash causation study that is currently underway at Oklahoma State University.”

This sentiment is supported by Sensenbrenner and many of his colleagues in Congress through the recently introduced H. Res. 1498: Supporting Efforts to Retain the Ban on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Ability to Lobby State Legislators Using Federal Tax Dollars and Urging the NHTSA to Focus on Crash Prevention and Rider Education and Training.
