Welcome Y Family Members!
Dear Valued Customer,

We would like to personally thank you for being a part of our ever-growing Y Marina Family. I would like to start November’s newsletter by welcoming all of our new readers. This month’s newsletter will contain much less content that our typical Y Family Newsletters, as we are heading into our annual November Coos Bay location closure. We use this short office closure to place next year’s orders, and to ensure that we can get the right product at the right price for our Y Family Members.

Even though we will be out of the office for the majority of the month, we would like to encourage each of you to write in and share your wonderful stories and experiences, as it has added an exciting new feature to our Y Family Newsletter. We love to hear all of your wonderful stories, try your favorite recipes and of course share all of the wonderful testimonials that our Y Family Members have shared with us. All contributors to the Y Family Newsletter will be rewarded for their efforts!

We would like to thank all of our Y Family Members for another wonderful year in 2010. We are very excited to see what 2011 is going to bring. We would like to wish each and every one of our Y Family Members a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to seeing you when we return on November 23rd. We hope you enjoy our November Y Family Newsletter.

Coos Bay Power Squadron
Y Marina has teamed up with our local Power Squadron to bring you important updates and information about Power Squadron boating courses available both locally and on a national scale. Our local Power Squadron is always looking for new members, and there are plenty of benefits that go along with becoming a member. Visit www.usps.org/coos, or contact SEO Craig Beyer at 541-290-3957 for upcoming classes and more information on your local Power Squadron.

Our local Power Squadron will be offering another boaters education course on January 10th, 2011 at 6:30pm. This class is one of the finest boater’s education courses available to the public. This course is approximately 12 hours long and provides excellent information about boating and boating safety. All types of boats will be covered during this 12 hour course, which is Coast Guard approved, and fully prepares you to take the exam for your Oregon Boaters Education Card. Completion of this course will also help you reduce your boater’s insurance premiums! As a bonus for those that register for this course, the Power Squadron will add a bonus navigation supplement. John Griffith on Marine Reserves (Part 1)
We have enemies who are trying to force us off the ocean.

They’ve been at it for 10 years. We’re defending against them on our own because the governor and state legislature let them substantially have their way with us. Their solution – kicking us off fishing places in Oregon’s 3 mile-wide territorial sea today, and off more tomorrow – addresses no actual problem with fish or their habitat, or with fishery management. None of their alleged reasons for reducing the amount of area where we can fish are relevant here, although they might be in Asia or Central America.

Therein lies their strategy: They hope to snooker a majority of people who are gullible, ignorant, and lug around loads of fear and guilt. They need the public to believe that the ocean is sick, we’re to blame for it, and only they have the knowledge and moral compass to repair all the damage. For now, that means closing fishing areas, forever. They say they don’t want to close everything, but since they cannot identify a problem to justify closing any more than what we’re already being locked out of, and they make their living by pushing the public out of its own land and resources, can they be trusted to ever back off?

Ten years ago they wanted us to volunteer fishing areas to close as a “leap of faith” that their fear mongering was actually reality-based. They soon quit trying to change our mind. Our knowing the facts about near-shore ocean health and management made that line of attack a fool’s errand. So in 2001 they began saying that if we don’t keep sacrificing more and more areas, they will put forward a statewide ballot measure and close as much as they like.

I’ll go into more detail of the Marine Reserves scam in future editions of the Y Family Newsletter, because the subject is too large to do all at once. I think I’m qualified to explain it. I was on both Oregon Ocean Policy Advisory Councils, am a member of the Port of Coos Bay’s Cape Arago advisory committee, and as a newspaper reporter covered the topic since its beginning here in Oregon.

Meanwhile, I suggest readers pay attention to the Marine Reserve (MR) issue.

Y Marina Brag Board
We would like to thank Don and Marge Borner for sending us our Y Marina “Brag Board” photo of the month. This picture of a recent fishing trip that Don had taken with some friends, and one young man on his first salmon fishing adventure. As you can see in the photograph below, they were quite successful on their weekend fishing trip. Here is a quick synopsis of the weekend from Don himself;

Some friends of mine from Klamath Falls came up to our place with their boat last weekend, Gage Springer (8 years old), his father and his grandfather. They asked me to pick them out some lures that my catch some salmon so I showed them the Super Hoochie. These lures were successful for us the previous week and they picked out the pink and green. The next morning we set off in separate boats on the Coquille River. We trolled from the 101 bridge to the power line and it didn't take more than 10 minutes when he hooked a 28lb Chinook, Gage’s first ever, and while landing it they broke their landing net. Not to be defeated, they kept trolling and he landed a 32inch Coho. Their boat landed a total of 3 salmon that day. The next day Gage did almost the same thing but a little smaller and on Sunday he hooked another .There total catch was nine salmon for the weekend.

We would like to thank Don and Marge Borner for submitting this wonderful entry. Remember, this “Brag Board” is a special place where hunters, fishermen and boaters can share their stories and/or photographs with our Y Marina Family. This is a place where a “fishing or hunting story” becomes a reality, and where a day of fun on the lake becomes a memory that will last a lifetime. This photograph will also be featured on our brand new Brag Board at Y Marina’s Coos Bay location, as well as the Photo Gallery page on our website.

Do you have an impressive catch that you would like to share with our readers? We would love to hear about it! Send us a photograph and a short description of the story and we will post it in next month’s Y Family Newsletter. It’s as easy as clicking on the “Share and Win” icon in this newsletter. We are excited to see what our Y Family members have been up to this fall.

November Y Family Entry
This month’s Y Family Entry comes from long times friends of Y Marina, Shane and Pam Smisek. Shane and Pam had recently run into some engine trouble while fishing one morning on the Coos River. They came to Y Marina for help with their trouble. The following is a letter describing their experience;

September 15th, 2010

To the Staff at Y Marina:

We would like to say thank you. While fishing on the Coos River on Saturday, September 11th our Mercury outboard blew a cylinder, making it inoperable. After getting a tow to the dock, we loaded up the boat and went to your store. We would like to thank Dan and Bob in the Mechanics Department for diagnosing the problem. We would also like to thank Mark and Trader Scott of the fair deal they made us on a bigger motor for our boat. We would especially like to thank Delbert and Matt in the Rigging Department for their quick and professional service in switching motors that same afternoon, allowing us back on the water the next morning fishing. Again, thank you to everyone involved in helping us.

Thank you,

Shane and Pam Smisek

P.S. Also, thank you to Jeff in the service department for getting thus the correct prop so the motor would run at the correct RPM’s the following week.

We would like to thank Shane and Pam for the wonderful letter that they wrote. We take great pride in making sure that each and every one of our Y Family Members leaves our store satisfied with their purchase or service. We greatly appreciate their kind words to the entire team.

If you have a testimonial or an interesting story that you would like to share with our Y Family Members, we would love to feature it in our next Y Family Newsletter. Please remember that we are interested in just about anything that you would like to share with the Y Marina Family, especially all of the stories of interesting experience you have had on the water. We would love to try your recipes, share your experiences and feature photos of you and your friends and family out on the water. Simply email Ryan Lancaster with your story and you may be featured in next month’s newsletter. If email is not your preferred method of communication, feel free to give me a call at 541-888-5501, or come and talk with me in person! Just ask for Ryan. We look forward to hearing from you very soon!

What to Watch For - Stabicraft Marine
Keep an eye out for Stabicraft boats, coming in 2011 to Y Marina, Inc. We will be the exclusive dealer of Stabicraft boats from Portland, Oregon to the California border. Check out ymarinaboats.com for a short video on what Stabicraft boats are all about, or visit Stabicraft’s website for the history of Stabicraft boats and a full line of models available.

Myself and five other employees recently had the opportunity to demo one of these incredible Stabicraft boats. The model that we had the chance to operate was the Stabicraft 529WF, which is their 17’ model. We jammed 6 of us into the boat and set out towards the bar. The boat was powered by a Yamaha F90TLR, which propelled the boat about 35 MPH with a full load of people and gear in the boat. Needless to say it was not an ideal day to be heading over the bar, as swells varied from 6-8 feet and the wind chop created very rough seas. We were truly going to put this Stabicraft to the ultimate test.

This Stabicraft boat more than exceeded our expectations. This boat was unbelievably stable, and handled the rough water extremely well; better than many of the larger model boat available today. You had to be there to truly appreciate how well the boat handled in the situation it was forced into. The appearance of these Stabicraft boats is definitely out of the ordinary, but the ride and handling is unmatched. Keep an eye out for the arrival of these New Zealand built aluminum boats, as they are coming to Y Marina very soon!

November Recipe of the Month
For November’s recipe of the month we wanted to feature a wonderful Dungeness Crab Recipe that is simple to prepare and that will be a hit at any upcoming holiday parties. 2. Slice the French bread very thinly into 1/4-inch slices, cut each slice into two pieces, place on a baking sheet and brush each slice with melted butter; add the cracked pepper, pressing to adhere; place under the broiler for approximately 2-3 minutes until lightly toasted; Turn each slice over and toast the other side for 2-3 minutes until lightly toasted; Remove from oven and cool in the pan on a rack.
  3. In a small bowl combine the cream cheese, sour cream, garlic, crab, Parmesan, cayenne and salt; mix well; Lightly butter two 4 oz. (1/2 cup) ramekins, fill each ramekin with the crab mixture (This can be done ahead of time, covered and refrigerated until ready to bake)
  4. When ready to serve, bake for approximately 20 - 22 minutes until top is bubbly and starting to turn brown; Place on a plate with a pate knife and the toasted bread and serve. Makes approximately 1 cup.

Joke of the Month

Divert your Course!

The following is supposedly a documented conversation between the USS Lincoln and a Canadian "vessel"....

Canadian: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Negative. You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the captain of a us navy ship. I say again, divert your course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert your course.

Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. I demand that you change your course 15 degrees north, I say again, that's one five degrees north, or counter-measures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

This month’s joke was brought to from yachtforums.com. If you have a boating or fishing joke that you would like to share in our next Y Family Newsletter please do not hesitate to contact us. You can share your joke by clicking on the "Share and Win" within this newsletter.
