John Griffith on Marine Reserves (Part 2)
In the first installment I wrote that Oregon state government has found no problem in the territorial sea that would be corrected by taking a new management direction. For example, when biologists had evidence to recommend that the Oregon abalone limit be reduced to one per day, five all year, minimum shell measurement 8 inches, they talked with the public about it and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission changed the rules.

Oregon’s Ocean Policy Advisory Council (OPAC), there’s been two and I was on both, did not find where current management need to change to protect fish populations in the territorial sea. If a problem was found, the state deals with it as it did with abalone. There was no reason found to designate area as no-fishing marine reserves. However, some of the other members on the OPAC spoke of concerns that radical environmentalists might try to put forward a statewide ballot initiative measure. Their worry seemed well-founded, at least to them: Environmentalists have been threatening to do that since 2001. Even here in Coos County, at the Port of Coos Bay’s committee to discuss adding a no-fishing marine reserve at Cape Arago, committee members have expressed that fear. One supposed community member threatened his colleagues that if they didn’t close more of the cape to fishing, outsiders would force it on us.

Ballot measure campaigns can get expensive, and it’s not us asking for this fight. Environmentalists give up nothing if we don’t have more marine reserves, they’ve entirely failed to make a coherent argument for why we should close more public access and use, and for the most part they don’t live in this community, even though it’s this and other coastal communities that will bear all the cost of losing more public land.

But if they’re coming for a fight, I believe we should just get right into it. Let them try to hurt us if they want, but I think they’ll lose: They’ve won only one out of about half a dozen they’ve tried in the past 16 years, and this one will be harder to win than that one was. Their winner was a measure to ban using hounds to hunt cougars and bears. Their losers were fencing all Eastern Oregon streams to keep cattle out, two losses at trying to end clear cutting, another to stop logging on the Tillamook State Forest and another one or two I can’t recall now.

When you think about their only winner, fewer people hunt than fish, and only a very small subset of those are houndsmen. It’s true that Multnomah County voters provide the tipping majorities to elect governors who push marine reserves and other harm-only, benefit-free environmental policies. But voters have more than just one important issue to consider in governor elections. There’s general ideology, and things like public employment pay and benefits. But when it comes to marine reserves, a lot of public employees like to fish, and aren’t going to be hoodwinked by environmental activists who helped elect the governor. A lot of people in Portland and Eugene, two towns who help in big ways to elect anti-coast governors, like to fish and know that there’s no problem worth hitching up to the ban-fishing wagon.

The environmentalists keep threatening us and so far it’s been working for them. They keep getting more and more of our ocean just by being nasty. I think they’ve come more than far enough.

December Service Department News
Our service department is open for business, and is ready to accept appointments for the month of December. In November we have already seen our first drastic drop in temperature and even snow fall in a majority of Oregon. The winter of 2009 wreaked havoc on boat owners across the state. Many boat owners had not prepared their boat’s engines for the cold by having their inboard or outboard engine winterized. Cracked engine blocks cost many customer thousands of dollars in engine repair. Don’t fall victim to the cold this winter, have your boat engine winterized today.

Y Family members can now purchase Yamaha manuals directly from the factory. Simply visit our website, www.ymarinaboats.com, and click on the “Buy Yamaha Manuals Online” banner located right on our homepage.

Y Marina Brag Board
We would like to thank Wayne Van Burger and the team from The Joy of Fishing for sending us our Y Marina “Brag Board” photo of the month. This is a picture of a recent fishing trip on the Rogue River, where Wayne and the crew landed this monster white sturgeon. This sturgeon was estimated at 10-12ft in length and well over 400 pounds. This fish took an impressive 2 hours to land, and wreaked havoc on the gear used that day. Bent hooks and a broken rod was the result of this monster catch.

Y Marina is a proud sponsor of The Joy of Fishing, now on FSN and FSN HD. You can see more incredible catches like this one every Sunday at 9:30am on Fox Sports Northwest. Tune in next weekend to follow the team on their next adventure!

Do you have an impressive catch that you would like to share with our readers? We would love to hear about it! Send us a photograph and a short description of the story and we will post it in next month’s Y Family Newsletter. It’s as easy as clicking on the “Share and Win” icon in this newsletter. We are excited to see what our Y Family members have been up to this fall.
