Griffith
Fishing
Information
for
January |
Just
as
salmon
were
earlier
this
year,
winter
steelhead
numbers
appear
to
be
really
high.
Fishing
has
been
good
when
rivers
are
in
shape.
They
were
out,
for
the
most
part,
the
week
between
Christmas
and
New
Year.
Fishing
was
good
leading
up
to
that
week
and
should
be
good
as
we
go
through
January.
I've
been
steelhead
fishing
for
more
than
40
years.
I
was
lucky
to
experience
a
time
when
fishing
was
good
and
crowds
small.
Fish
populations
are
better
now
than
before
in
my
lifetime,
but
crowds
are
way
worse.
Already
one
day
this
season
a
fishing
partner
and
I
had
to
change
plans
completely
when
we
got
to
the
East
Fork
Millicoma
and
there
was
literally
no
place
to
stand
without
being
rude
and
unmannered
(which
doesn't
bother
some
people).
But
besides
being
lucky
about
when
I
got
to
be
alive
and
outdoors,
I'm
lucky
to
have
legs
that
work
well,
and
a
powerboat.
Sometimes
legs
can't
get
us
away
from
crowds
on
public-access
water.
A
driftboat
--
I've
had
mine
since
1976
--
doesn't
work
as
well
now
that
people
have
become
so
fond
of
motoring
back
through,
over
and
over,
good
water
and
dragging
bait
and
lures.
My
jet
boat,
on
the
other
hand,
takes
me
places
where
I
can
have
good
fishing
mostly
or
all
to
myself,
just
like
40
years
ago.
I
couldn't
say
that
if
I
lived
in
northern
Oregon,
but
that's
the
case
here.
Mine
is
a
small
boat,
a
Rogue
Marine
model
named
a
Stealth,
powered
by
a
40
hp
(30
hp
at
the
pump)
Yamaha
outboard.
I
bought
mine
at
Y
Marina
in
2008.
They're
a
popular
model
on
the
upper
Rogue
River
and
in
Alaska,
but
I
don't
see
many
of
them
here.
But
then,
on
winter
rivers
where
powerboats
are
allowed,
I
don't
see
a
lot
of
boats.
Best
wishes
for
a
good
2011
and
for
good
times
fishing.

Y
Family
Entry |
We
would
like
to
thank
Claude
and
Lucy
Thompson
for
their
wonderful
Y
Family
Entry
for
December.
Claude
and
Lucy
have
won
our
Y
Family
Entry
contest
for
the
month
of
December,
and
will
receive
a
holiday
gift
,
courtesy
of
Y
Marina.
We
greatly
appreciate
the
following
kind
words
from
Claude
and
Lucy,
some
of
the
finest
people
Y
Marina
has
ever
had
the
pleasure
of
dealing
with;
We
would
like
to
attest
to
the
quality
of
service
we
have
received
for
many
years
at
Y
Marina.
We
purchased
our
boat
in
1993
(we
still
have
the
same
one,
though
we
have
drooled
over
some
since).
Fairly
new
to
ocean
boating
we
couldn't
have
asked
for
a
better
experience
than
we
received
during
the
purchase
process.
Bill
was
still
there
but
Scott
handled
our
transaction
and
it
all
went
smoothly.
However,
the
most
important
to
us
has
been
the
superb
treatment
from
the
service
department.
There
were
several
times
over
the
years
when
we
broke
down
right
in
the
middle
of
some
very
important
fishing
(you
know
how
that
is!)
the
service
department.
always
tried
to
work
us
in
immediately,
or
as
quick
as
they
could
and
most
times
it
was
immediately.
There
were
a
couple
intriguing
problems
that
cropped
up,
but
Dick
always
stuck
with
them
and
we
eventually
conquered
them.
One
thing
that
truly
stands
out
is
that
we
are
a
long
distance
away
(live
in
Brownsville)
my
husband
often
will
call
Dick
and
talk
a
problem
through
and
it
sometimes
has
been
simple
enough
that
a
part
is
shipped
to
us
and
Jr.
can
install
it;
saving
a
long
trip
and
lots
of
money
over
the
years,
this
has
been
appreciated
more
than
you
will
ever
know!!
Thanks
Y
Marina
for
helping
make
our
boating
and
fishing
experience
much
easier.
We
are
older
folks
and
truly
appreciate
the
class
of
service
that
we
have
received.
Sincerely,
Claude
(Jr.)
and
Lucy
Thompson

Joke
of
the
Month |
January’s
joke
of
the
month
is
a
true
story
sent
in
by
a
member
of
the
Marathon
Sail
and
Power
Squadron.
The
story
was
found
at
bootkeyharbor.com
and
goes
something
like
this;
Last
summer,
down
on
Lake
Isabella,
located
in
the
high
desert,
an
hour
east
of
Bakersfield,
California,
some
folks,
new
to
boating,
were
having
a
problem.
No
matter
how
hard
they
tried,
they
couldn't
get
their
brand
new
22
ft.
Bayliner
boat
to
perform.
It
wouldn't
plane
at
all,
and
it
was
very
sluggish
in
almost
every
maneuver,
no
matter
how
much
power
was
applied.
After
about
an
hour
of
trying
to
make
it
go,
they
putted
over
to
a
nearby
marina,
thinking
someone
there
could
tell
them
what
was
wrong.
A
thorough
topside
check
revealed
everything
in
perfect
working
order.
The
engine
ran
fine,
the
outdrive
went
up
and
down,
the
prop
was
the
correct
size
and
pitch.
So,
one
of
the
marina
guys
jumped
in
the
water
to
check
underneath.
He
came
up
choking
on
water,
he
was
laughing
so
hard.
REMEMBER,
THIS
IS
TRUE.....
Under
the
boat,
still
strapped
securely
in
place,
was
the
trailer.
