Griffith
on
Marine
Reserves
(Part
3) |
Fishermen
used
to
have
to
know
just
how
to
fish,
and
understand
the
few
rules
involved.
Most
of
the
rules
made
sense.
Not
anymore.
Some
are
purely
political,
and
politics
makes
sense
only
to
politicians,
special
interest
groups,
and
people
who
watch
them.
More
fishermen
need
to
watch
them.
State
Representative
Arnie
Roblan,
a
Coos
Bay
Democrat
and
co-speaker
of
the
House,
has
introduced
a
bill
this
legislative
session
that
will
turn
all
management
of
Oregon's
3
mile-wide
territorial
sea
over
to
radical
environmentalists.
It
will
replace
the
real
sciences
of
biology
and
fisheries
management
with
activist-dominated
ecology.
This
new
bill
is
a
follow-up
bill
to
one
he
got
passed
last
session.
The
bills
are
HB
3106
(2009
session)
and
HB
2190
this
session.
They
can
be
found
at
http://www.leg.state.or.us/bills_laws/
for
those
who
like
to
research.
Also
last
session,
Roblan
passed
a
bill
that
gave
Oregon
its
first
two
new
marine
reserves
in
14
years,
HB
3013.
There's
three
more
no-fishing
marine
reserves
currently
proposed
on
the
central
and
north
coast,
although
none
here
on
the
south
coast.
A
group
formed
by
the
Port
of
Coos
Bay
will
vote
March
19
on
whether
to
add
marine
reserves
at
Cape
Arago.
Marine
reserves
are
a
management
tool
that
has
helped
rebuild
fish
numbers
within
the
area
that
was
closed
to
fishing.
Where
they've
done
that,
primarily,
is
where
resources
were
abused
by
having
few
or
no
fishing
regulations
and
enforcement.
Those
are
not
the
circumstances
along
the
Oregon
coast.
Everything
has
catch
limits
here,
including
all
shellfish,
fin
fish
and
marine
plants.
Because
of
all
those
circumstances
--
where
reserves
have
shown
benefits
and
what
things
are
like
here
--
there's
no
reason
to
suppose
marine
reserves
would
do
anything
here
except
hurt
fishermen
and
businesses
that
serve
them.
I
recently
spoke
with
Representative
Roblan.
He
told
me
he
expects
his
bill,
HB
2190,
will
be
"amended
as
necessary."
Yeah,
right,
as
necessary
to
accomplish
what?
This
sort
of
nonsense
just
keeps
coming
from
people
who
don't
hunt
or
fish
but
are
taking
away
our
access,
and
replacing
our
effective,
scientific
fish
and
wildlife
management
with
pseudo-science.
They
could
not
do
it
if
our
elected
representatives
wouldn't
let
them.
Even
though
they
might
believe
they
were
elected
to
represent
people
in
a
different
part
of
the
state,
guys
like
Roblan
get
a
sense
of
whether
they're
going
to
keep
their
job
from
letters
that
people
in
their
district
write
to
them.

Y

Entry |
We
would
like
to
thank
Doug

for
his
wonderful
Y

Entry
for
January.
Doug
has
won
our
Y
Family
Entry
contest
for
the
month
of
January,
and
will
receive
a
gift
certificate,
courtesy
of
Y
Marina.
We
greatly
appreciate
the
following
kind
words
from
Doug;
I
would
like
to
sincerely
thank
the
Y
Marina
staff
for
an
outstanding
purchase
experience.
I
have
a
16’
Tracker
Superguide
which
has
provided
me
with
many
fun
and
productive
fishing
and
boating
trips.
I
have
been
wanting
to
upgrade
the
stock
40hp
motor
because
the
kids
I
am
pulling
around
behind
the
boat
keep
getting
bigger
and
the
motor
was
starting
to
become
short
on
power.
I
also
have
wanted
to
do
away
with
the
noise
and
smoke
of
the
2
stroke
engine
but
the
cost
for
a
new
or
nearly
new
60
hp
4-stroke
just
seemed
out
of
reach.
I
had
been
periodically
checking
with
both
local
marinas
in
town
but
was
not
very
hopeful.
Mark
and
Scott
let
me
know
that
they
would
be
getting
a
60hp
Mercury
in
that
needed
some
major
work
but
was
still
under
warranty
and
they
would
be
willing
to
make
me
a
deal.
Some
time
passed,
including
the
November
shut
down,
but
the
staff
stayed
in
touch
and
I
am
happy
to
say
I
now
have
the
60hp
mounted
on
my
boat
at
a
price
that
didn’t
break
my
budget.
All
of
the
staff
were
very
friendly
and
helpful
with
the
process.
I
also
had
a
tachometer
installed
at
the
same
time
and
can’t
wait
to
get
my
boat
on
the
water.
I
would
highly
recommend
the
Y
Marina
for
quality
sales
and
service.
Thank
you.

Joke
of
the
Month |
February’s
joke
of
the
month
goes
out
to
all
of
those
people
that
have
had
trouble
finding
parts
for
their
boat
or
engine.
The
joke
was
found
at
bootkeyharbor.com
and
goes
something
like
this;
How
many
boaters
does
it
take
to
change
a
light
bulb?
None,
because
the
right
size
bulb
isn't
on
board,
the
local
marine-supply
store
doesn't
carry
that
brand,
and
the
mail-order
house
has
them
on
back-order.
