San Manuel/Red Bull Yamaha’s James Stewart captured round five of the 2011 AMA Supercross season with a dominating win at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday night, Feb. 5. The YZ450F racer’s third victory of the year increases his lead to five points over event runner-up Ryan Villopoto and an impressive 27 points over third-place podium finisher Chad Reed. Adding to the good news for Yamaha, JGR/Muscle Milk’s Justin Brayton scored his best finish yet this year with a strong fourth after defending series champ Ryan Dungey dropped out with a derailed chain. The championship moves over to Houston, Texas next week, where the Lites East series will begin.

While the rest of the country seemed locked in a deep freeze, mild California weather greeted Supercross fans in Anaheim once again. However track conditions proved tricky, as a combination of hard-packed dirt and loose sand demanded maximum suspension adjustability – and constant vigilance from the riders. Stewart won the first heat race with ease, while Dungey claimed the second heat. But it was Bubba’s night in the main event, as the Yamaha star grabbed the holeshot through a flat and fast first turn. What happened next was truly awe-inspiring though. Stewart instantaneously gained several bike lengths through the first rhythm section – and then several more as he bravely quad-jumped through the next. Essentially, the Yamaha rider gapped the entire field in just three corners, and after that he was unchallenged to the checkered flag.
