Ethanol has had a positive reputation throughout the years. By converting corn and other organic materials into ethanol, America can reduce our dependency on foreign oil sources. Today, ethanol is put into most of the gasoline American’s buy, and each gallon can have up to 10% of ethanol. On the outside, ethanol seems to be a savior, but within our rumbling pipes on our motorcycle it is destroying the mechanics.

Ethanol, in other words, is alcohol. Alcohol can have and will affect the operation of your motorcycle. Since the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) allows a gallon to have up to 10% ethanol a rider will see a decrease in the engine’s power up to six percent. “Ethanol has a lower flash point, which means it explodes at a lower temperature than gasoline, yet it burns hotter. Inside your engine, this combination can lead to premature detonation – engine knock – which robs power and harms engine components.”

“Ethanol is a powerful solvent. It can loosen rust and other contaminants that might otherwise lie undisturbed in your fuel system. It is able to dissolve rubber hoses, seals, plastics, and resins. Over time, ethanol can even eat away at soft metals like brass and aluminum. All of this dissolved material must then be pushed through your engine.”

“Finally, the worst behavior that ethanol brings into your gas tank is its hygroscopic property.” Hygroscopic means the ability to attract and hold water. One of ethanol’s most fatal attributes for a motorcycle is its ability to attract water and blend with it. Ethanol will absorb any surrounding water molecules causing ethanol to increase in volume or stickiness. “When ethanol and water mixture is pumped into your engine, you will experience hard starting, a significant loss of power, and engine misfires.”

Overall, when purchasing gasoline for your motorcycle remember “I don’t want ALCOHOL POISONING!”. The less ethanol in your motorcycle the longer and better it will run. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to ask any of our friendly staff members at (970)351-8150.
