John
Griffith's
Fishing
Tips |
May
can
be
a
good
bet
for
warm
water
gamefish
fishing.
I
say
"can
be"
because
this
year,
who
knows.
This
global
warming
deal
isn't
working
out;
it
just
keeps
being
winter.
But
let’s
say
we
do
have
a
May.
For
inlanders,
which
we
can
be
simply
by
pointing
the
tow
vehicle
away
from
salt
water,
Tenmile
Lakes
are
close
to
home,
the
warmer
part
of
the
Umpqua
a
bit
farther.
Bass
could
start
spawning
and
biting
lures
if
it
warms
up
and
rivers
drop
like
they
used
to
around
here.
I
recall
a
trip
--
more
an
adventure
--
with
great
local
bass
fisherman
Pete
Heley
over
to
the
Umpqua.
We
set
out
early
to
Roseburg
and
launched
my
drift
boat
under
the
bridge
that
carries
traffic
to
Diamond
Lake
Highway.
From
there
we
floated
to
River
Forks
Park,
casting
plugs
and
soft
baits
to
smallmouth
bass
spots
along
the
way.
Pete
fished
mostly
and
I
rowed,
which
was
fine
because
I
wanted
to
learn
from
him
and
watch
his
casting.
In
a
long
day,
he
put
every
cast
exactly
where
it
needed
to
be,
no
misses,
no
overshots,
no
tangles.
He'd
bounce
some
like
a
flat
rock
atop
the
water
to
get
them
to
go
back
toward
the
bank
when
an
overhanging
limb
prevented
a
simple,
overhand
lob.
We
caught
lots
of
smallies,
too,
and
saw
big
schools
of
shad
although
we
weren't
there
to
try
for
them.
We
saw
V
wakes
of
aggressive
squaw
fish
pursuing
salmon
smolts
across
the
wide
tailouts.
I
threw
big
Matuka
streamer
flies
at
them
and
stripped
them
in
fast.
The
fish
would
change
course
hard
and
just
rip
those
big
streamers.
They
were
good
for
nothing,
so
after
a
slight
modification
to
prevent
their
reverting
to
their
bad
habit
of
eating
salmon
smolts,
I
released
them.
We
ended
the
day
with
no
fish
retained,
hundreds
caught,
and
a
long
drift
trip
over
extremely
varied
water.
It
remains
my
favorite
spring
fighting
trip
all
these
years
later.

May's
joke
of
the
month
was
found
at
www.boatdesign.net
and
goes
something
like
this;
Ambition-
An
American
businessman
was
at
a
pier
of
a
small
coastal
Mexican
village
when
a
small
boat
with
just
one
fisherman
docked.
Inside
the
small
boat
were
several
large
yellowfin
tuna.
The
American
complimented
the
Mexican
on
the
quality
of
his
fish
and
asked
how
long
it
took
to
catch
them.
The
Mexican
replied,
"Only
a
little
while."
The
American
then
asked
why
didn't
he
stay
out
longer
and
catch
more
fish.
The
Mexican
said
he
had
enough
to
support
his
family's
immediate
needs.
The
American
then
asked,
"But
what
do
you
do
with
the
rest
of
your
time?"
The
Mexican
fisherman
said,
"I
sleep
late,
fish
a
little,
play
with
my
children,
take
siesta
with
my
wife,
Maria,
and
stroll
into
the
village
each
evening
where
I
sip
wine
and
play
guitar
with
my
amigos.
I
have
a
full
and
busy
life,
señor."
The
American
scoffed,
"I
am
a
Harvard
MBA
and
could
help
you.
You
should
spendmore
time
fishing
and
with
the
proceeds
buy
a
bigger
boat.
With
the
proceeds
from
the
bigger
boat
you
could
buy
several
boats
and
eventually
you
would
have
a
fleet
of
fishing
boats.
Instead
of
selling
your
catch
to
a
middleman
you
would
sell
directly
to
the
processor,
eventually
opening
your
own
cannery.
You
would
control
the
product,
processing
and
distribution.
You
would
need
to
leave
this
small
coastal
fishing
village
and
move
to
Mexico
City,
then
Los
Angeles,
and
eventually
New
York
where
you
will
run
your
expanding
enterprise."
The
Mexican
fisherman
asked,
"But
señor,
how
long
will
this
all
take?"
To
which
the
American
replied,
"Fifteen
to
20
years."
"But
what
then,
señor?"
The
American
laughed
and
said,
"That's
the
best
part.
When
the
time
is
right
you
would
announce
an
IPO
and
sell
your
companies
stock
to
the
public
and
become
very
rich.
You
would
make
millions."
"Millions,
señor?
Then
what?"
The
American
said,
"Then
you
would
retire.
Move
to
a
small
coastal
fishing
village
where
you
would
sleep
late,
fish
a
little,
play
with
your
kids,
take
siesta
with
your
wife,
stroll
to
the
village
in
the
evenings
where
you
could
sip
wine
and
play
your
guitar
with
your
amigos."
