Rolling
thunder
XXIV
|
| Annual
Memorial
Weekend
Demonstration |
|
Sunday
May
29,
2011,
will
be
the
24th
annual
demonstration
for
POW/MIA
awareness.
In
1987
a
group
of
Vietnam
Veterans
got
together
and
discussed
their
concern
about
the
POW/MIA’s
and
the
lack
of
attention
given
to
their
issues.
They
decided
to
hold
their
first
demonstration
on
Memorial
Weekend
in
1988.
They
had
approximately
2500
motorcycles
in
participation
and
the
march
was
announced
by
the
roar
of
the
motorcycles
and
described
as
the
sound
of
thunder.
Thus,
the
name
“Rolling
Thunder”
was
adopted.
Since
then
the
participation
has
grown
to
over
900,000
motorcycles
from
all
over
the
country.
Rides
from
area
motorcycle
dealerships
leave
early
Sunday
morning
and
meet
up
at
the
North
Pentagon
parking
lot.
The
main
march/demonstration
leaves
the
Pentagon
around
noon
and
passes
through
the
streets
of
Washington
DC
with
throngs
of
people
cheering
and
waiving
USA
and
POW
flags
in
support
of
this
patriotic
demonstration.
The
Rolling
Thunder
Organization
is
a
non-profit
organization
that
works
to
publicize
the
POW/MIA
issue
and
make
the
public
more
aware
of
the
many
Americans
left
behind
after
past
wars.
But
they
also
provide
financial
aid,
food,
clothing
and
more
to
veterans,
homeless
veterans,
and
veterans
families
in
need.
They
visit
hospitals
and
nursing
homes
nationwide
and
give
support
to
those
suffering
from
Post
Traumatic
Stress
Disorder.
So
remember,
as
you
see
the
motorcycles
passing
by
over
Memorial
Weekend
that
they
will
continue
to
ride
until

POW/MIA’s
ARE

A

this

the
statement
“less

The
peanut
tank,

give
it
its
bobber
look
while
its
big

response
gives
it
great
power

Track
Days
2011 |
| It's
Spring
and
a
young
man's
fancy
turns
to
thoughts
of
RACING! |
|
Have
you
ever
watched
the
pros
race
on
TV
and
wondered
what
it
would
feel
like
to
ride
like
they
do?
How
fast
could
you
go?
How
would
you
do
in
the
turns?
Track
days
at
Summit
Point,
Shenandoah,
and
Thunderbolt
race
tracks;
actually
give
you
the
opportunity
to
ride
on
the
same
tracks
that
many
pros
have
raced!
Participants
are
put
into
one
of
four
groups,
beginner,
intermediate,
advanced
and
racer.
Each
Group
travels
in
the
same
direction
at
the
same
approximate
speed.
All
riders
get
to
improve
their
skills
with
hours
of
instruction
and
quality
track
time
from
a
friendly
experienced
coach
in
a
fun,
fast
environment.
You
will
get
to
know
your
bike
and
what
it
can
do
while
you
exponentially
increase
your
skill
level
and
learn
to
ride
smarter.
It’s
a
fun
family
atmosphere
with
equipment
rentals
and
vendors
on
site.
And
for
those
that
want
even
more,
there
is
the
road
racing
school
where
graduates
qualify
for
a
racing
license.
So
when
the
warm
weather
calls
don’t
just
ride
the
country
roads,
get
yourself
to
a
track
and
see
what
you
and
your
motorcycle
can
really
do.
