John
Griffith's
Fishing
Tips |
July
is
good
for
a
lot
of
things:
vegetable
gardening,
baseball,
surfperch
fishing
and
other
equally
important
non-boat
activities.
Regarding
boats
and
fish,
however,
we
have
bass
fishing
in
area
lakes
(largemouth)
and
in
the
Umpqua
(smallmouth
and
striped),
and
Chinook
salmon
fishing
(inland
rather
than
ocean
fishing),
shifts
from
the
spring
variety
in
the
Rogue
and
Umpqua
to
the
fall
variety.
That
means
at
its
most
fundamental
level
that
instead
of
fishing
from
anchored
boats,
we
fish
from
moving
boats.
And
for
those
who
are
properly
equipped
to
go
upon
the
ocean
safely,
we
have
rockfish,
halibut
and
salmon.
Depending
on
the
weather
and
how
close
warmer
water
comes,
tuna
fishing
offshore
also
should
start
going
off.
If
you
have
put
off
having
your
boat
and
its
engine
checked
out
after
a
long
parking
and
don't
typically
do
it
yourself,
now
would
be
a
good
time
to
schedule
it,
even
if
you're
aiming
more
toward
late
summer
or
fall
for
your
main
period
of
boat
use.
It's
also
nice,
when
everything's
in
the
driveway
or
shed
and
before
the
cops
do
it
for
us,
to
check
the
condition
and
number
of
mandatory
safety
gear
(lifejackets
--
are
they
getting
frayed?
--
fire
extinguisher
pressure
guages
all
up
to
charge,
etc.).
With
me
anyway,
when
I
go
through
the
first-in-a-long-time
boat
checklist
(at
least
I'm
not
to
the
stage
of
having
to
write
it,
lists
are
still
mental),
I
remember
all
kinds
of
extra
stuff:
Oarlocks,
because
my
boat
can
be
rowed
and
sometimes
it
is;
landing
net,
anchor,
cooler
chest;
tool
kit,
grease
gun,
etc.
At
this
stage
in
my
life,
I've
learned
that
it's
better
to
start
organizing
the
day
before
departure
instead
of
waiting
right
up
to
the
last
hour
or
two
before
departure.
I
used
to
be
pretty
good
at
last-minute,
but
not
anymore.

Joke
of
the
Month |
July's
joke
of
the
month
was
inspired
by
the
upcoming
4th
of
July
holiday.
This
joke
was
found
at
www.guy-sports.com
and
goes
something
like
this;
Parable
for
The
4th
of
July-
Once,
in
the
1820's,
a
little
boy
called
Sam
was
playing
in
the
yard
behind
his
house.
During
his
pretend
fighting
game,
he
knocked
over
the
outhouse.
Now
Sam
was
upset
and
worried
that
he
would
get
into
trouble
so
he
ran
into
the
woods
and
didn't
come
out
until
after
got
dark.
When
he
arrived
back
home,
his
pappy
was
waiting
for
him.
He
asked
suspiciously,
"Son,
did
you
knock
over
the
outhouse
this
afternoon?"
"No,
pappy,"
Sam
lied.
"Well,
let
me
tell
you
a
story,"
said
the
father.
"Once,
not
that
long
ago,
Mr
Lincoln
received
a
shiny
new
axe
from
his
father.
Excited,
he
tried
it
out
on
a
tree,
swiftly
cutting
it
down.
But
as
he
looked
at
the
tree,
with
dismay
he
realized
it
was
his
mother's
favorite
cherry
tree,"
his
pappy
paused."
just
like
you,
he
ran
into
the
woods.
When
he
returned,
his
pappy
asked,
'Abraham,
did
you
cut
down
the
cherry
tree?'
Abraham
answered
with,
'Father,
I
cannot
tell
a
lie.
I
did
indeed
chop
down
the
tree.'
Then
his
father
said,
'Well,
since
you
were
honest
with
me,
you
are
spared
from
punishment.
I
hope
you
have
learned
your
lesson,
though.'
So,"
the
Sam's
father
asked
again,"
did
you
knock
down
the
outhouse?"
"Pappy,
I
cannot
tell
a
lie
any
more."
said
the
little
boy.
"I
did
indeed
knock
down
the
outhouse."
Then
his
pappy
father
spanked
Sam
boy
red,
white,
and
blue.
The
boy
whimpered,
"Pappy,
I
told
you
the
truth!
Why
did
you
spank
me?"
Pappy
answered,
"That's
because
Abraham
Lincoln's
father
wasn't
in
the
tree
when
he
chopped
it
down!"
