Salmon
Season
Update! |
The
2011
salmon
season
continues
to
produce
groves
of
fish
for
Northwest
anglers!
While
certain
fisheries
have
been
more
productive
than
others,
all
seem
to
have
had
great
runs
thus
far.
Those
fishing
the
Coos
River
and
Umpqua
River
inlet
waters
have
been
extremely
successful
in
the
past
couple
of
weeks.
Plug
cut
herring
continues
to
be
the
bait
of
choice
at
this
point
in
the
season,
but
there
have
been
reports
of
success
on
lure
rigs
as
well.
The
fish
still
have
been
caught
in
deep
water,
sometimes
25-35
ft.,
using
up
to
8-oz
of
lead
to
get
the
bait
where
the
fish
are
biting.
With
the
guidance
of
one
of
my
co-workers,
I
was
able
to
land
a
nice
Chinook
of
my
own
just
this
past
weekend.
One
of
2
fish
landed
that
day
on
our
boat.
Our
second
fish
was
a
nice
9
lb.
Coho.
This
was
one
of
several
very
nice
Coho
landed
that
morning,
signaling
many
that
the
Coho
run
gaining
speed,
and
will
be
hot
very
soon!

John
Griffith's
Tribue
to
Mike
Helfrich |
Outdoorsmen
and
women
lost
a
good
friend
last
month
with
the
passing
of
Mike
Helfrich,
68,
of
Coos
Bay.
Mike
was
a
founder
of
Bay
Area
Sportsmens
Association,
which
gave
thousands
of
dollars
to
salmon
propagation
efforts,
and
to
sports
opportunities
for
young
people.
He
was
a
volunteer
coach,
coaching
my
and
lots
of
other
people's
children
when
they
were
little.
I
asked
him
once,
when
he
was
still
managing
the
Coos
Bay
branch
of
US
Bank,
how
he
managed
all
his
volunteer
work,
his
fishing
and
hunting,
and
a
full
time
job?
I
wondered
if
he
ever
slept,
and
how
he
managed
to
be
so
easy
going
and
caring
about
everyone
all
at
the
same
time.
He
was
good
at
everything
he
did,
but
never
seemed
hurried.
He
retired
pretty
young,
that
meant
to
him
that
he
had
more
time
for
volunteering
and
fishing.
He
was
on
the
Port
of
Coos
Bay's
Cape
Arago
Marine
Reserve
Recommendation
Committee.
He
and
I
co-authored
the
majority
report,
which
detailed
the
majority
vote
of
No
New
Marine
Reserves
or
Protected
Areas
at
Cape
Arago.
I
heard
about
his
death
when
I
was
out
fishing
on
Coos
Bay.
I
didn't
want
to
believe
it,
and
the
person
who
told
me
first
said
she
was
pretty
sure
but
not
positive
they
were
talking
about
OUR
Mike
Helfrich.
But
I
didn't
have
to
wait
to
get
ashore
and
check
the
newspaper.
More
of
Mike's
and
my
mutual
friends
also
told
me
out
on
the
water.
Mike
died
in
Tucson,
AZ,
Saturday
Sept.
24,
to
where
he'd
traveled
to
be
with
his
son,
Mark,
who
is
offense
coordinator
for
the
University
of
Oregon
Ducks
football
team.
I
know
he'd
been
fishing
in
the
days
leading
up
to
his
trip
to
Arizona,
so
I
guess
Mike
left
us
doing
what
he
liked,
in
his
graceful,
unhurried
way.
To
his
friends,
however,
it
seems
he
left
much
too
soon.

Month |
For
October’s
recipe
of
the
month
we
wanted
to
feature
something
that
I
had
the
opportunity
to
try
just
the
other
night
with
my
recent
Chinook
catch.
Salmon
is
the
main
ingredient
for
this
month’s
recipe,
and
it
was
found
in
Emeril
at
the
Grill:
A
Cookbook
for
All
Seasons.
My
family
and
I
absolutely
loved
this
recipe.
Ingredients
-
2
large
Hass
Avocados,
Peeled,
Pitted,
and
½
in.
Diced
-
6
Tbsp.
Finely
Chopped
Red
Onion
-
2
Full
Cobs
Yellow
Corn,
Husked
and
Silk
Removed
-
2
Cups
Vine
Ripen
Tomatoes,
Diced
¾
in.
-
½
Tsp.
White
Pepper
-
¼
Cup
Fresh
Lemon
Juice
-
Emeril’s
Everyday
Essentials
Seasoning
-

Tbsp.
Salt

Olive
Oil

Fillets

Parsley,
Chopped
Preparation
Instructions
-
Bring
large
saucepan
full
of
water
to
boil.
Add
yellow
corn
to
water
and
let
cook
until
tender,
approximately
4
minutes.
Let
cool
until
manageable
to
handle
and
cut
kernels
from
cob.
Place
the
Kernels
in
a
large
mixing
bowl.
- Add
the
prepared
tomatoes,
avocados,
red
onion,
lemon
juice,
¼
Tsp.
white
pepper,
2
Tbsp.
olive
oil,
½
Tbsp.
Salt
and
fresh
parsley
to
bowl.
With
a
large
mixing
spoon
tumble
the
ingredients
together
until
mixed
thoroughly.
Place
bowl
in
refrigerator
until
ready
to
serve.
- Place
salmon
fillets
on
baking
sheet.
With
the
remaining
2
Tbsp.
olive
oil,
brush
the
fish
until
fully
covered
evenly
in
olive
oil.
Evenly
sprinkle
the
fish
with
Emeril’s
Everyday
Essentials
seasoning,
remaining
½
Tbsp.
Salt
and
¼
Tsp.
White
Pepper.
-
Preheat
grill
to
Medium
and
place
salmon,
skin
side
down,
on
grill.
Let
cook
until
it
begins
to
turn
opaque,
approximately
4-5
minutes.
Turn
fish
over
and
cook
for
an
additional
3-5
minutes,
or
until
cook
through.
Remove
from
grill
and
place
on
serving
dish.
-
Spoon
corn,
avocado,
and
tomato
relish
over
the
grilled
salmon
and
serve.
