fair.

| Snowmobile
Tech
Tips
From
Donahue
Super
Sports |
Winter
is
around
the
corner
and
with
that
being
said,
owners
are
going
to
want
to
make
sure
their
snowmobiles
are
ready
for
the
season.
The
following
items
to
check
are
a
guideline.
Always
consult
you
owner’s
manual
for
anything
that
may
be
unclear
or
call
our
service
department.
We
will
start
with
the
motor
and
go
from
there.
First
would
be
the
air
intake
and
air
box.
Make
sure
it
is
clean
and
free
of
any
debris
or
mouse
nests.
If
your
sled
has
carburetors
on
it,
make
absolutely
sure
they
are
varnish
and
old
fuel
deposit
free.
This
is
our
biggest
contributors
to
motor
engine
failure
every
year.
The
only
way
to
be
sure
is
to
check
the
carburetor
float
bowls
and
main
jets.
Gas
additives
and
carb
fuel
system
cleaner
additives
will
not
properly
take
care
of
the
problem.
If
you
cannot
do
this,
we
highly
recommend
you
bring
it
into
a
quality
snowmobile
service
shop.
Next
would
be
the
engine
oil.
For
2-strokes,
make
sure
your
oil
tank
is
full
of
the
proper
2-stroke
oil.
For
a
4-stroke
sled,
make
sure
engine
oil
is
at
the
proper
level.
If
you
did
not
change
engine
oil
and
filter
as
part
of
summer-izing,
change
it
now
before
the
season.
Check
spark
plugs
for
any
fouling,
carbon,
and
proper
gap.
If
needed,
change
plugs
out
for
new
ones.
If
your
sled
is
liquid
cooled,
check
for
the
proper
level
of
coolant
and
check
coolant
temperature
rating.
We
recommend
-40
degrees
Fahrenheit.
Repair
any
leaks
if
found.
Next
would
be
the
clutches
and
drive
belt.
Make
sure
primary
and
secondary
clutches
engage
and
disengage
smoothly.
Check
drive
belt
for
proper
tension
and
replace
if
any
heat
burns
or
splitting
or
cracking
or
delaminating
marks
are
visible.
Always
carry
a
spare
belt.
Nothing
ruins
a
day
of
sledding
like
a
broken
drive
belt.
Locate
the
chaincase
and
check
oil
level,
if
this
has
not
been
changed,
do
so
at
least
every
3000
miles.
While
by
the
chaincase,
locate
the
brake
pads
and
replace
if
wore
down
past
limit.
Also,
check
operation
of
brake
and
make
sure
the
parking
brake
is
released.
Check
the
track
for
any
wear
and
proper
tension.
Check
every
clip
on
both
sides
of
track.
Replace
any
if
needed.
Check
slides
for
excessive
wear.
Make
sure
all
of
your
bogie/idler
wheels
turn
freely
and
don’t
have
excessive
side-to-side
play
in
them.
Replace
bogie/idler
wheel
bearings
if
required.
Make
sure
rear
suspension
will
compress
under
load
smoothly
without
binding
and
return
freely.
If
equipped
with
grease
zerks,
grease
with
a
low-temperature
waterproof
grease.
Let’s
move
to
the
front
suspension.
Check
the
skis
for
proper
alignment.
Turn
handlebars
lock-to-lock,
they
should
move
freely
in
both
directions.
Check
carbide
for
proper
wear,
replace
if
wore
down
too
far
or
pieces
of
carbide
are
chipped
out.
Normally
when
carbides
are
worn
flat
they
need
to
be
replaced.
This
will
also
help
with
better
steering
control.
Replace
ski
itself
if
bent
or
cracked,
or
has
excessive
wear
in
the
carbide
mounting
area.
Check
front
suspension
movement
and
address
any
binding
issues,
then
if
equipped
with
grease
zerks,
grease
with
a
low-temperature
waterproof
grease.
If
everything
checks
out
in
working
order,
you
will
be
ready
for
a
good
season
of
sledding.
You
do
not
want
to
end
up
on
the
side
of
a
trail
waiting
for
a
ride
or
help.
Remember,
have
fun
and
stay
safe.
