I built my first Harley-Davidson when I was 16. I started working in a dealership 30 some years ago. In 1989 I went to Australia and built the first 3, top fuel Harley-Davidsons in the southern hemisphere. In 1993, I came back to the U.S. and I started working in a dealership . I have been at a Harley-Davidson dealership since. The last 12 years I have been at Harley-Davidson World.

This summer was one of the hottest we have had in a long time. We have heard lots of riders saying their bike was pinging. Today we live with unleaded gas. When there was lead in the fuel, that helped with the ping or pre-detonation. The timing of the spark on a V-Twin motorcycle (Harley-Davidson) changes as the load goes up, full throttle vs. cruise, around 30 -40 degree. Too much timing , it will ping. Also today's bikes run a lot leaner which helps make them run hotter and ping as well .

Gas after 45 days , starts to go bad. This makes the compression ratio go up, and with this, so does the pinging. The fuel injected Harley-Davidsons have a system that monitors spark knock and backs up engine timing to keep your motor safe. Where as they didn't have this in the past, pinging was a problem and could cause motor damage.

Yes, a stock bike can also ping because time is kept at optimum for power. Unless it pings an outragous amount,it isn't an issue. Your stock bike will be safe. You can put a tuner on your bike that will let you set your timing where you want.
