December Snowmobile Drivebelt & Clutch System Maintenance Tips From Donahue Super Sports
The drivebelt - clutch system is a vital part of a snowmobile drivetrain and is often overlooked from a maintenance standpoint. These few tips will help ensure a trouble free ride.

The drive belt should be inspected about every 1,000 miles of riding. To gain access to the belt, open the left side cover and remove the clutch guard. On some sleds there is a clutch tool in your tool kit which allows the secondary clutch to be opened up. The tool will look like a treaded rod in the shape of an allen wrench or have a t-handle end with threads on it. Insert the tool into the secondary clutch, the larger of the two clutches. Gradually thread the tool in to open the secondary pulleys apart. After the clutch is opened, about ¾ of the way, the belt will be loose enough to remove. Slip the belt off the secondary clutch first, then off the primary clutch. Once the belt is removed, check for any cracks, burn marks, frayed cords or chunking of cogs. If not in 100% condition, replace with a new belt.

With the belt off, the clutches can be cleaned. Clutches should be cleaned at least every 2,000 miles. Blow out dust, debris and rubber bits with compressed air from both clutches. Make sure to get every moving part clean of debris. As with any servicing, always wear proper eye protection as these particles can be small and go everywhere. Also, always wear proper hand protection when dealing with solvents. The clutch surfaces should be cleaned next. The belt rides on this surface. You can clean the pulley surfaces with a cleaning solvent, like acetone or paint thinner. Then use a Scotchbrite pad to scuff both clutch pulley surfaces. This will give the belt better grip, when done clean the clutch surface again. DO NOT apply any oil or lubricant to the clutches. This will attract dust and dirt, slowing clutch movement. The belt will slip as well if any oil is on the clutch surfaces.

When installing the belt, make sure the rotation arrow on the belt is facing forward when read by looking down towards the clutches. The clutches spin counter-clockwise. Slide the belt over the primary clutch first, then over the secondary, by either opening the secondary clutch by hand, or with the tool if provided. Now you can begin to release tension on the secondary by unscrewing the clutch tool. As you are doing this, rotate the belt counterclockwise continuously. This will work the belt out to the top edge of the secondary clutch and prevent the belt from being pinched. Also, check to see if belt tension is proper and the belt does not sit above the secondary clutch. Place tool back in tool kit, replace clutch guard and side cover properly. Note that a new belt will take about 50 miles to break-in. Avoid hard acceleration and high speed during those first few miles.

These few easy maintenance tips will improve the belt and clutch life. Consult your owner’s manual for brand/model specific procedures. If you feel this maintenance is above your ability or comfort level, bring your sled into Donahue Super Sports and have our factory certified technicians perform the work for you.
