John
Griffith's
Update
on
Local
MR's |
The
board
of
commissioners
of
the
Port
of
Coos
Bay
voted
for
good
sense
and
sound
public
process
last
month
by
affirming
its
Cape
Arago
Marine
Reserve
committee's
recommendation
that
no
new
marine
reserves
or
marine
protected
areas
be
established
at
Cape
Arago.
The
port
commissions
forwarded
the
recommendation
on
to
the
state
Ocean
Policy
Advisory
Council.
Commissioner
Caddy
McKeown's
motion,
approved
unanimously,
stated
that
when
the
state
has
data
from
its
new
no-fishing
marine
reserves
elsewhere
on
the
coast,
the
Port
Commission
may
take
the
subject
up
again
locally.
The
34-member
Cape
Arago
Committee
voted
last
March
by
two-third
majority
for
no
new
MRs
or
MPAs.
There's
already
four
research
reserves
and
a
marine
garden
at
the
Cape,
the
state
has
budgeted
no
general
fund
to
study
the
two
new
reserves
it's
designated,
and
it
will
probably
be
years
--
if
ever,
given
that
there's
no
general
fund
money
going
into
the
project
--
before
data
are
gathered
that
might
lead
people
here
to
want
a
new
MR
of
their
very
own.
In
2010
the
committee
unanimously
voted
for
a
consensus
statement
that
included
a
point
that
the
committee
was
unaware
of
any
biological
problem
at
the
Cape
that
would
recommend
for
an
MR.
But
in
their
dissent
report,
the
losing
one-third
said
lack
of
a
problem
does
not
suggest
that
a
new
reserve(s)
should
not
be
put
at
Cape
Arago.
Regardless
off
the
harm
it
would
do
to
their
neighbors,
they
opined
that
a
new
MR
could
bring
potential
grants
for
them
to
study
it.
They
also
criticized
the
process
for
not
including
an
examination
of
studies
other
MRs
by
MR
scientists.
I
also
felt
that
was
a
shortcoming
but
for
a
reason
opposite
of
theirs.
Having
been
on
both
the
original
and
new
Ocean
Policy
Advisory
Councils
as
well
as
the
Port's
Cape
Arago
Committee,
I
knew
they'd
complain
if
we
didn't
make
our
work
much
longer
by
indulging
them
in
a
pointless
debate
about
irrelevant
science.
I
was
over-ruled
by
the
majority
voting
on
that
issue
at
that
time
when
we
were
deciding
direction
for
our
committee's
work.
The
majority
apparently
felt
that
wading
through
irrelevant
scientific
literature
was
unnecessary.
Now,
predictably,
the
minority
on
the
final
No-New-MRs-or-MPAs
committee
vote
are
trying
to
allege
that
that
was
a
fatal
shortcoming
of
our
committee.
I
am
grateful
to
the
Port
commissioners
for
their
vote.
What
it
will
mean
in
the
long
run
is
anyone's
guess.
MR
advocates
aren't
going
away.
Their
leadership
is
paid
to
try
to
put
rural
folks
out
of
work,
or
they
work
at
our
universities
and
feel
that
we
need
to
sacrifice
more
than
our
taxes
to
keep
them
satisfied.
