Snowmobile
Cooling
Issues
&
Maintenance
Tips
From
Donahue
Super
Sports |
With
the
warmer
winter
we
have
been
having
so
far,
you
need
to
pay
close
attention
to
the
engine
temperature
of
your
snowmobile.
Most
sleds
on
the
trails
today
are
liquid
cooled
like
an
automobile.
There
is
antifreeze
that
circulates
through
the
engine
and
is
then
cooled
down
by
an
aluminum
extrusion
called
a
heat
exchanger.
A
heat
exchanger
is
similar
to
a
car’s
radiator
but
it
relies
on
snow
to
cool
down
the
antifreeze
instead
of
air
passing
through
it.
A
heat
exchanger
on
a
sled
is
located
throughout
the
tunnel
underneath
by
the
track
or
possibly
on
the
underside
of
the
running
boards.
Snow
needs
to
be
kicked-up
onto
the
heat
exchanger
to
cool
the
antifreeze
and
engine
efficiently.
Above
freezing
temperatures
during
the
day
cause
the
top
layer
of
snow
to
melt
into
slush,
then
during
the
night
this
layer
freezes
into
hard
snow
and
ice.
This
hard
packed
snow/ice
does
not
want
to
break
up
easily.
A
rubber
snowmobile
track
is
not
aggressive
enough
to
break
up
this
frozen
combination
of
snow
and
ice,
which
does
not
allow
it
to
get
to
the
heat
exchanger.
Because
of
this,
the
antifreeze
and
engine
begins
to
overheat.
The
addition
of
studs
or
snow
scratchers
will
aid
in
breaking
up
this
hard
snow/ice
combination
and
allow
the
heat
exchanger
to
cool.
Also,
the
lack
of
snow/ice
being
moved
around
the
track
will
cause
your
slides
to
heat
up
and
cause
premature
wear.
So
if
you’re
going
to
ride
early
in
the
morning
with
these
conditions,
wait
a
few
hours
for
other
sleds
to
break
up
the
trails
a
little
bit.
If
the
trails
are
still
too
hard
when
you
are
going
to
ride,
try
to
find
some
loose
snow
to
ride
in
every
once
in
a
while.
Keep
an
eye
on
your
engine
temperature.
Most
sleds
have
an
indicator
light
or
a
gauge.
When
the
engine
temp
starts
going
above
normal,
pull
over
and
turn
the
engine
off
to
cool
it
down
or
try
to
find
some
loose
snow
to
ride
in.
Keeping
your
engine
cool
will
prolong
engine
life
and
help
prevent
a
major
break-down
on
the
trail.
So,
check
the
trail
conditions
first
whenever
you
go
for
a
ride,
then
make
sure
you
have
some
loose
snow
to
keep
your
engine
cool.
Happy
Riding.
