If
your
idea
of
bliss
is
two
wheels
and
a
powerful
engine,
the
Seventh
Annual
Summer
Run
for
Meals
on
Wheels
is
your
ticket
to
the
“fun”
in
fundraiser.
The
event
is
the
brainchild
of
Jane
Doroff,
Director
of
Nutrition
at
the
Council
On
Aging
and
longtime
biking
enthusiast.
“The
idea
came
from
my
love
of
motorcycling,”
says
Doroff.
“I
have
always
had
an
interest
in
motorcycles
since
growing
up
in
rural
Minnesota,
where
I
rode
mini
bikes
and
progressed
to
dirt
bikes.”
The
run,
this
year
scheduled
for
August
20,
has
raised
$150,000
over
the
years.
This
year
new
sponsors
are
taking
over
from
Vee-Twin,
the
sponsor
for
previous
years:
the
Redwood
Empire
Harley
Owners
Group
(HOG),
which
has
been
sponsoring
annual
bike
runs
for
the
past
18
years,
and
Michael’s
Harley-Davidson
of
Cotati.
The
run
is
expected
to
draw
more
than
800
participants.
The
run
ends
at
the
Petaluma
Fairgrounds,
12–4
PM.
The
$20
fee
includes
a
barbecue,
wine
auction,
raffle,
music,
a
poker
run,
bike
games,
belly
dancers
and
a
ride-in
bike
show.
To
add
to
the
excitement,
Jim
Leskar
of
Michael’s
Harley
Davidson
has
donated
a
brand
new
2006
Heritage
Softail
to
be
raffled
off
during
the
show.
“Meals
on
wheels
touches
a
lot
of
people
on
a
daily
basis,”
says
Leskar.
“I
thought
the
kitchen
fund
was
a
very
good
cause
to
makes
things
a
little
bit
easier
for
them
to
do
their
job,
and
reach
more
people.”
The
local
HOG
chapter
had
recently
completed
funding
of
the
home
and
kitchen
for
the
Valley
of
the
Moon
Children’s
Center.
“Most
all
of
the
work
is
done
by
the
REC
Harley
Owner’s
Group
out
of
their
desire
to
give
something
back
to
the
community.”
“The
bike
run
reaches
out
to
folks
who
have
grandparents
or
parents
they
may
be
caring
for
now
or
have
cared
for
in
the
past,”
says
Doroff.
And
motorcycles
are
not
just
for
kids,
with
more
and
more
people
pursuing
the
joy
of
biking
into
their
own
retirement
years.
“People
think
it
is
very
dangerous,
but
you
learn
to
drive
defensively
and
expect
the
unexpected,”
Doroff
notes.
“My
driving
skills
have
improved
tremendously
since
I
started
riding
my
Harley.”
