A
little
history
about
your
new
GS:
BMW
introduced
their
first
GS,
"Gelande
Strasse",
meaning
"Terrain
Road",
in
1980,
and
with
it
their
first
monolever
(single
sided)
swingarm.
In
1981
BMW
entered
an
R
80
G/S
in
the
third
year
of
the
Paris-Dakar
Rally
and
finished
in
1st
position
with
a
lead
over
three
hours
long!
Since
then
BMW
has
continued
to
improve
their
GS's
until
their
current
R
1200
GS.
When
they
introduced
the
R
1200
GS
in
2005
it
quickly
became
the
standard
by
which
all
other
bikes
of
it's
type
are
judged.
It
did
so
well,
it
was
voted
bike
of
the
year
by
the
International
Motorcycling
Press.
The
smaller
version
of
the
GS,
the
F
650
Funduro
first
came
to
the
US
in
1997
and
was
updated
to
the
current
F
650
GS
model
for
the
2001
model
year.
BMW
entered
the
Dakar
version
of
the
F
650
GS
in
the
Paris-Dakar
Rally
where
it
won
the
first
two
years
it
ran
the
rally.
