Harley Salutes Our Military

Harley-Davidson Offers Military Personnel And Veterans Exclusive Customizing Options

Harley-Davidson motorcycles have a long and storied history with our US Armed Forces since being drafted into service for WWI, and is now paying tribute to military personnel by providing those who have served their country the chance to customize their motorcycle with special details honoring their military service. "Harley-Davidson is proud of the unique bond and heritage we have with the military going as far back as 1916," said Jim McCaslin, President and Chief Operating Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. "The Patriot Special Edition is simply a way to help honor those who have served. These are special motorcycles for very special members of the Harley-Davidson family." The 2007 Patriot Special Edition specially decorated models will be sold exclusively to active U.S. military service men and women, veterans and immediate family members of both those categories. These Vivid Black motorcycles will be accented with red and blue pin striping and the standard U.S. flag, consistent with all military uniform symbols, on the fender. The Patriot Special Edition motorcycles will feature a branch-specific fuel tank badge installed at the dealership, saluting those who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy. Customers will receive a personal letter of appreciation and special-edition Harley-Davidson Challenge Coin made by the Franklin Mint. Challenge Coins are a unique and time-honored tradition in the military. The Patriot Special Edition program will be available on 12 different 2007 Harley-Davidson models: FLHTCU Ultra Classic Electra Glide FLHRC Road King Classic FLHX Street Glide FXDC Dyna Super Glide Custom FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic FLSTF Fat Boy FLSTC Softail Custom XL1200C Sportster 1200 Custom XL1200L Sportster 1200 Low XL883C Sportster 883 Custom VRSCAW V-Rod Sidecar Customers will need to provide proof of military service (Veterans will need their DD Form 214, active military discharge document) to qualify for purchase. A veteran is a person who served in the active military, naval or air service and who was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Harley-Davidson Military Highlights include: - An estimated 20,000 motorcycles, most of them Harley-Davidsons, took part in World War I. Corporal Roy Holtz of Chippewa Falls, Wisc., was photographed as the first American riding into Germany after the signing of the Armistice in 1918. - During World War II, Harley-Davidson produced approximately 90,000 WL military models used on virtually every front, and the Company received the Army-Navy "E" Awards for excellence in wartime production. - Many Harley-Davidson customers and dealers are military veterans, and it is estimated that about 14 percent of Harley-Davidson U.S. employees are veterans. The Company has supported community events such as the Rolling Thunder Ride to the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial in Washington, D.C., and the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial and World War II Memorial. Harley-Davidson To Make Trikes!

Harley-Davidson is beefing up its hogs. The motorcycle maker has announced it will begin making three-wheelers, also known as trikes, in partnership with Lehman Trikes U.S.A. Lehman, based in Spearfish, S.D., just miles from the home of the world-renown Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, already converts motorcycles made by Harley and other manufacturers into trikes, but the new line will be branded as Harley-Davidson and sold through Harley's dealer network. Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. did not release further details about the new bikes or when they would be released. Spokesman Bob Klein said he expected the trikes would be priced similarly to other brands on the market. The company has made three-wheelers before, such as for police and commercial use, but this venture with Lehman will be different, said H-D spokesperson Bob Klein. Harley is recognizing that more and more riders are interested in riding trikes, which have the look and feel of two-wheeled motorcycles but with a little more stability. Klein said that while at the popular Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in South Dakota in August he saw people of all ages and backgrounds riding trikes. "We've observed that trikes are becoming a popular phenomenon and we think that they'll appeal to a variety of customers," Klein said. Harley's move to trikes will also expand the brand's appeal to an aging market, where according to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation the average rider's age has jumped from an average 28.5 years old in 1985 to 40.2 years old in 2003.
